Most who have responded have advised against this purchase, and my guess is because they, like I, suspected that it might be a salt water boat given your close proximity to the Pacific. Other joking about your first mate aside, salt water corrosion of a vessel that age is no laughing matter, the price is $8K too high, and you WILL pour money into that boat. I am a Sea Ray lover, but I wouldn't give $8K for it if I was given a sea trial AND it was a documented fresh water only boat. Good luck Sir! ;)

Oh believe me I have listened to each and every one of you. I am fairly new to boats and am taking it for granted that you all are a lot more knowlagable than I. From the sounds of it I wont be getting this boat. I was asking about the salt water on another boat I am looking at. I am hoping to get the owner of the Sea Ray to check out this tread, and see if maybe he could come up with a more realistic price.
Thanks again and I sure enjoy these forums.

Exactly! As I said, "silly cigarettes" or more commonly, "wacky tobacky" Or perhaps the seller took out a second mortgage on his house to buy it...sheesh!

It is way to high a price for my area and a single gas engine, would spook me too. It is a beauty though.

That seller is nuts! He is 2x the price on both his trailer and his boat. It's kinda like the assessor's office placing a value on your land due to the "view" being worth $100.000. Don't laugh, I personally know someone in Oregon that happened to! (well, I don't remember exactly how much it was but it was absurd)

Dated versus classic:

Take a 1970's style kitchen, with orange formica and green appliances; toss in yellowish linoleum floors. It's going to look dated, even when in great condition. Some styling cues from the 80's look tacky and dated, too, be it on cars or boats.

Classics: Classics aren't classic because they are old, they are classic because they have a certain style that proves to be timeless. They never seem dated.

When I call something dated, I am not calling classics dated, I'm calling tacky, kitschy, junkie styling cues dated.

Now where did I put my parachute pants and neon green socks?

Honestly $11 if it was a fresh repower and in mint condition. $17000 can but you a lot if boat or a much newer boat!

I actually like the older style boats, so classic verse dated, to me it's not classic as much as it's just a nice looking 80s boat.

Re: I am diggen this boat but my first mate doesnt seem to. What do you folks think

shortleg, let me give you something specific about that exact model boat. It is DATED. And if your wife don't like it, keep looking. That being said, you are NOT going to find anything quite like it, actually. That 268 Sundancer is unique boat in that it has both a full v-berth, aft berth, AND a dinette, while only being 8.5' wide. (warning it will weigh about or over 10,000lbs on the trailer, though)To find a boat set up like that one, that is modern, you're going to have to go to a 29' boat that is at least 9.5' wide, more likely 10'. My parents first cruiser was a 1989 Sundancer 268, in 2000. They LOVED it! But eventually my mom wanted something that was more modern. So after a 27' Chap Sig 27, in which they lost the separate dinette, and hated because of it, they had to go all the way to a Chap Sig 30! 10'3" wide, and about 13,000lbs on the trailer. So figuring in the 50k or so he spent on the used Chap Sig 30, and the $50,000 3500 Chevy diesel pickup he needed to tow it (he used a 2500 Suburban with a 7.4 to tow the Sea Ray), it could cost you $100,000 to get a non dated boat!
Only other specific to warn you about is that that boat most likely has an Alpha One drive behind that 454. The only did that for 3 years, and that's one reason for the invention of the Bravo series drive. That Alpha will wear out and break eventually pushing that big ol' heavy boat around. Oh and your fuel economy will be about 1.5 mpg.

Yep...even in as beautiful condition as that 268 appears, it would command about $7k to $9k MAX here in the Midwest. Having said that, it is a CLASSIC...and the teak wood is worth the labor of love if you enjoy having a boat that exudes a certain kind of luxury. The modern roundish, plastic looking boats simply have no personality or character. I know, I have both a "classic" and "Euro" shaped cruiser. The "plastic egg" as I call it, is for sale in the spring! And that trailer is only worth $1500 to $2000, if perfect! Seller is smokin' silly cigarettes. :D
"Euro style" sucks in imho.

We just went for a ride on it and the first mate loved it. BUT we are not liken the feedback on the price. It is a very clean well cared for boat. Also I can sure see how the single engine leaves room for improvement.
