What's it worth 5 years from now in your area? Even if you keep it pristine will it still pull a fair price, due to the age?
It's a shame the boat isn't worth it, because they were/are a great boat. I love all the wood and the layout works. Just an older boat and will take a ton of TLC to keep it up.
If you go every weekend and are going to keep the boat for a long time, then I'm sure there's a deal there, but not a fast one.
For the price there are better boats to buy right now. imho

DO you & your mate a big FINANCIAL favor.

Get some EXPERIENCED boaters...NOT AFRIEND OF THE SELLER or the marina where itis.
You need to load the boat on the trailer. Tow it at around town & a high speed highway. Up & down some hills. CAUTION I may not have good enough brakes. Back down a ramp. Unload it into the water. Drive around AT LEAST 15 minutes. Then check for water leaks. Then see if it can be loaded onto the trailer. Buy a tow vehicle.

OFFER $ 5,000 He could have 130 weight oil in everything to slow leaks & stop noises............You REALLY do not know a thing about machinery, fuel tank or electrical wiring thruout the boat THAT OLD

Anyone who asks 2 X the going price has a real loser. & is out to stick it to everyone.

You can & WILL DO MUCH BETTER.

I have to agree with those saying about it with one screw. I have a single on my 28'er and it is a pain in the arse to get into the slip sometimes especially when it is a LITTLE windy. I won't even attempt to go out if the winds are over 15mph. The open water isn't the problem, it is in and around the marina. If you are new to boating, manuevering a boat that size does take some experience.

This year at my local dock, the guy across from me bought his first boat and it is a 27'er with 1 screw. Guess what? He has only taken it out 4 times the whole season because he is too afraid to damage his boat or the one next to him when he comes back to dock. All he talks about now is getting a different boat with twins.

I've been boating since the 60's and do manage to handle mine pretty well. It sure can get one a bit nervous when your slip is shared with a boat that is newer than yours and worth 5 times more. I'd say keep looking and take your time. Be patient as the pne you will get will come around......Good Luck in your endeavors..........SS

It is good that the Admiral likes the boat. Do you have a vehicle that can tow that beast? Since you are new to boating and are willing to spend $17K on an old boat that has an I/O outdrive, you need to understand two definitions.

1
Break
Out
Anouther
Thousand

2
Boat: a hole in the water into which you pour money.

My suggestion wouls be to buy a 16ft Starcraft. It is a great value. Cheap to own and operate. It is aluminum, so when you bounce it off the dock, you won't gouge a chunk out of the gelcoat. It will let you discover if you even like boating without having a bad experience, which is what I think you will have with the Sundancer. my $0.02.

Re: I am diggen this boat but my first mate doesnt seem to. What do you folks think

We actualy have a 1983 16' Seaswirl that when we bought it 5 years ago was the most pristine boat we could find for the money we had. There was not a thing wrong with the boat we could find. We paid a premium for the boat given it's year but we have enjoyed the heck out of that thing until I saw water coming over the bow on a calm day(another boat went by in front of us) when our son and his girl friend was sitting in front. I think the boat is too small for the water we were on. We have a 1 ton dully diesel van that we pull a mini excavator on a dump trailer(im not new to towing). That little Seaswirl opened up a whole new world of enjoyment for us. I've been collecting gas station stuff for years and we are trading/ selling the gas station hobby for the boating hobby (kind of) we still have a couple of stations at our house. Docking the boat in the wind is something I had never thought about. We havent bought the boat and dont know what we are going to do. Last we talked we were at 15k

Yup, I'd say $8K w/trailer would be the max I'd put down on it. The boat appears to be in great condition, but the engine is probably nearing the end of its life. You can find SeaRay 268's all day long for $7-10K.

It would be really nice to get a hold of one of the $7-10 k boats today. Does anyone have one for sale? The NADA quoted above, does it include a trailer?
Thanks
I am curious how the two motors help to dock a boat on a windy day.
Double thanks

Before I downsized, I had a 30ft Sea Ray with twin 350's.

I could dock her without touching the steering wheel in any weather. :)

Just look around there are tons of Sea Rays everywhere, this one isnt going anywhere quick, I can almost bet you on that.

Start searching craiglist city by city, you will find them in all kinds of different condition too. Those boats sell for dirt cheap here in Michigan, and none of them will have ever touched SALT WATER!! add two screws and the cost gets even cheaper, but that's a fuel thing. The more boats you look at the more you will realize you could buy 2 boats for the asking price.

Just remember that twins in a 268 are going to be tightly spaced! It's less than 9' beam, so not much room between the engines.

You can put port screw forward and starboard in reverse, she will turn left without going forward and vice versa to go right. Sorta like a bulldozer steers. There is so much more control over a single. Twins can handle very tight spaces to get in out of. There is many times I wish I had twins. I got my boat and trailer for 4K in 2001. The trailer was actually worth more than the boat for the condition it was in.

I agree with this assuming by first mate you are talking significant other.

In my world, Wife is the admiral, I'm the captain and son is the first mate.

You and i live in the same world my friend....................

Mines much larger but could be yours for $8500. No trailer, but being 10'8" wide, I doubt you would want to trailer it anyway!

Twin motors dock without touching the steering wheel. You use the motors in forward or reverse to spin and rotate.

Re: I am diggen this boat but my first mate doesnt seem to. What do you folks think

Like everyone here has said, the boat just isn't worth what the guy is asking. He put some money into refurbing the interior thinking it would help his sale. It might if the right sucker comes along. This is a buyers market and will get more so over the winter. take your time and look around for a few months for the right boat to make you and the wife happy.

The boat does look dated. Some boats look better dated, this isn't one of them. Also think about this, the boat looks dated now, its just going to look more dated in 5 years. And yes twins are an advantage at the dock, but will cost you twice as much in maintenance and fuel.

not including the 2000 dollar trailer that is apparently worth 8k in your eyes....just buy it if your that stuck on it. its your money. better keep it for 30 years cause you will never get close to 17k back out of it, not now, not ever.

Weeew Thanks Americaneagler77 I was just waiting for some one to tell me to buy it. I get the feeling half of you think I am trying to argue with you on your opinions. I am not. I just like to understand the hows and whys of things. I havent bought the thing altho I really like it. I probably wont buy it. If what you all are saying is right I should be able to get me a nice 30' boat for under 15k!! I like the sounds of that. As always thanks for the help, I am learning and reading. Anything wrong with a 30' boat?
