^^^ Looks like they may have cut the transom skin off of that.
Actually, most Crestliner's I've seen have a HUGE wood transom on the exterior rear of the aluminum transom skin:

Of course there will be quite a few thru bolt holes to deal w/ or a wood sealing task every few years forever. Some of the one's I've seen had an extra 20-30 holes thru that piece of wood :facepalm:

I don't know about setting ya straight, but happy to pass on info. Many (mostly 50's & 60's) that I've seen needed the huge exterior ply for strength because the inside was setup such that only a single 3/4" piece of plywood would fit on the inside, so there HAD to be that big ole' ugly piece on the back. Even if you wanted to make it a more typical 1.5" thick piece on the inside only, you might not be able to get the splashwell, knee braces and etc to fit back right if you do.
