I was on the other side of town trying to find a shoe shop which turned out it was out of business or moved to another location. So I decided to go to the shop in the oposite side of town that I have dealt with before. I got on one of the worst streets we have in this city, I have even had 2 accidents on this 4 lane street.

This older full size chevy van pulls out from the boat ramp and gets in front of me which he had plenty of time to do so. I was sticking around 3 car length or more away from him. He is pulling a nice Stratos Bass boat with an Evinrude E-tec on it. We are approaching a red light just past where I have experienced an accident, a car leaves a space open for this other car (a chevy cavalier) that wants to come out of a parking lot on our right hand side. This car pulls out I don't even recall the car stopping to check for trafic, this car pulls out and nails the van in the side. The van kept going in a straight path, the car's front end made contact with the whole side of the van and boat. It knocked off othe spare tire rack on the boat trailer, it did damage the boat by scrapping it I don't know if it made a hole or not. The van didn't recieve that much damage but it did get some. The car was a Chevy Cavalier early 2000's model or so, the hole front bumper and all got tore off, the hood pushed in other parts scattered through out the road.

The driver of the van pulled in to a resteraunt parking lot, I decided to stop and see if he needed a witness. The driver of the car went a couple of parking lots down and parked there. I had my phone out, but I wasn't fixing to call 911 because so far from what I seen nobody was hurt, I walked around to where the van's owner was and somebody was already calling the city police. The owner/idiot of the Chevy Cavalier snuck off on us after sitting in the parking spot with in view for a few minutes we turned our back and he was gone. I waited until the police showed up, when they showed up I told them that I was just a witness, the cop got all the info from the Van's owner and told him to meat him over in a parking lot about a 1/4 of a mile up the road , I don't know why. I gave the man my phone numbers. The other man that called the police was out searching for the Chevy car which he did not find. I'm pretty sure his raidiator is screwed in that Cavalier. The one who was driving the car was holding his mouth, I figured he was holding it in shock of what happened, but when I mentioned what happened to my father he said "well he could of hit his face on the steering wheel" which is very possible. Maybe the man needs it hit a few more times to gain some more senses .

The owner of the van said he works on boats, so I figure he already knew how much it would take to get that fixed. As somebody said later, "you should of taken a picture of the Chevy car with your camera phone", I sure wished I would of thought of it then.

This isn't the only hit and run that I have seen I have seen one other in my life time, but this is the only one that I have volunteered to be a witness to.

Sounds like a real mess, glad no one was hurt.
My guess is he probably ran because of NO INSURANCE!

You're a good man for offering the information that you had - so many take the "I don't want to get involved" viewpoint, and that is one of the reasons why we have so much unchecked crime in our country.

My guess from the story is that cavalier driver was at that other parking lot the cop told the other driver to meet him at...

The funny thing is, hit and runs are so easily caught... it makes you wonder why anyone would try it.

Several years ago I was involved in a hit and run... with a twist. I nicked a guy's bumper, not real hard, but hard enough to be felt (no dents in my bumper, but plenty of scratches). Anyway I stopped and he took off. I figure he must have had a warrant out on him or something. I never found out because I wasn't going to chase him down anyway.

i saw a static that around 40% if the drivers on the road, are unlicensed, due to suspension, revocation. Hmmm could this be a possibility.

Probably... cops don't even do anything when they catch an unliscensed driver... they should haul their butts to jail and seize all of their vehicles (then auction them with the proceeds going to the general law enforcement budget).

No, there were three parking lot in a row, we were at the end one at first, then the van driver moved to the middle one. The Cavalier driver was at the 3rd parking lot down. The cavalier driver disapeared before the cops showed up, he was in sight then he must of drove off when we were looking at the damage on the van. Now he could of drove himself to the hospital but I doubt it. The cop told the van driver to move to a parking lot that is about 2 city blocks away if not more, now the cavalier driver may have tried to make it home or to a friends house that was in that direction and stalled out at the parking lot that the cop told the van driver to meet him at.

We can only assume, maybe it will be in the paper soon.

Re: I seen an accident today, hit and run.

We have had more than our fair share of hit and runs in the town close to us. It is a college town with a high percentage of international students, most of which are above average in responsibility. Many of those who aren't have got into vehicular trouble. Now our underground labor supply is outstripping the students and their families when it comes to hit and runs.

Oh yes, there are some home growns that do it, but usually they don't run far.

On the flip side, increased drug busts locally has coincided with a drop in traffic accidents of all types around here. Now if the rest of the population could get the same message.............

Well that actually works out better.

Un-insured motorist usually has 0 deductable
where his collision probably has $500 Ded.....

With the bad guy taking off he saved the guy some grief.

That's what I mean... the cavalier driver somehow ended up in that other parking lot 2 blocks away... for whatever reason. That's the only reason the cop would have to ask him to move down there to finish up the accident report... the cavalier driver may have even been pulled over by another cop down there and the cops needed the positive ID to charge him with hit and run.

Re: I seen an accident today, hit and run.

I'm sure the person in the Cav had a reason to run. Suspended license, intoxicated, drugs onboard, etc.... But it is still no reason not to be responsible for your actions.

Awhile back I saw an idiot pull up beside a 18 wheeler making a right turn. While the truck swung out to the left so the trailer would clear the corner curb, that is when the idiot pulled up on the trucks right side. Yep, the rear wheels of the trailer flattened the front end of the idiots car. What is ironic, the trailer had those warning signs on the rear of the trailer about making wide sweaping turns. People seem to be in such a hurry anymore a toss safety away.

Lately with the fuel prices, I've seen more people roll thru stop signs. However it erks me when they are in such a hurry and don't stop, that after they turn, the go 10 mph under the speed limit. This boogles my mind. Either they don't want to get caught speeding or they are trying to save a few pennies. I wouldn't think that there is much savings in going 25 vs 35.

Yes sgt, that is a possibility.

Especially when (lets say) some may be driving a standard shift and may be bogging/lugging the motor when possibly having it in the wrong gear (just a thought).

I just hope they catch the creep if they haven't already. I was hit by a person with no license or insurance he ended up paying for the damage out of pocket. I was traveling around a sharp curve and the next thing I know a truck backs out into the side of my truck.

You have to be so careful. About a month ago the local news was alerting drivers that people were deliberately ramming other vehicles then assaulting the drivers. It was thought maybe to be a gang initiation.

I recall hearing about that but it was further back when I heard about it, it supposedly was happening here in our city also.

Its not a bad idea in my town to carry a handgun in your car with you. Never know when you may have to deal with someone that will require you to get "the last word". You may have an accident with some one that wants to run away and then you will have make sure they dont till the cops get there.

Your a good person to stop and assist. I've read most of the replys to your story and I agree with most. Police officers do in fact issue citations and or make an arrest of persons who are caught leaving the scene of an accident. Just remember this.....an accident is a civil matter and it only turns criminal when one of the parties involved decides to leave without rendering aid/information.

Tell me about it, I know of at least one man here in town that has asked us twice for a ride to another town. Once when I was down town shopping with my mom, the other when I was taking care of business at our local court house, and my father was with me. Then I heard just yesterday another man was asked the same question by another man fitting his discription. Another thing also, each time this man asks for a ride out of town it is for a different reason. First one was his car was broke down, second one was for something of the same "he needed to go get his car", and the third one was his mother died so he needs a ride to this other town . I can't trust these type of people, it would be my luck the first thing he would do is pull a gun on me as soon as he got in my truck. Like my father says whoever pulls a gun on him will be a sorry soul, because he would hit the first telephone pole he could find and aim it right for the passenger's side.

I hear ya man, thanks.
