Re: Iraq War

QC,

Are you reffering to the rock mound or cable structure? If it is the mound, it was/maybe a machine gun nest at Hoover.

Been there. It's "wonderous" to be on the back side of Hoover.

Remember, "Islamo Facists" have more rights than you do, in this country-now. We can't "profile"-remember? BS, BS, BS.

Yeah, the "pill-box". I assumed it was a 9/11 reaction, but it is actually the last of an original four installed after Pearl Harbor as protection against Kamikazes. To be honest, I'd actually pay to see a Zero fly into the dam  Pretty sure it wouldn't do much more than leave a stain . . . ;)

QC,

WOO-HOO! I got it.

I love that area. I know it too well. Probably 100 crossings in four years. I always stop and look around.

We have NO idea what is up there, nor should we.

You're right about the original intention.

The BIG trouble is that the dam behind Powell is failing-fast. If it breaks loose, Hoover will not be able to contain the rush. Hoover is solid-however. That is why, for other reasons also, that Powell is being systematically "let down".

Kind of scary, but hush-hush at the same time.

Hoover/Mead levels are low because of development, but we must also realize that (history) tells us that we are in a serious drought-NOT man made. It is cyclical.

Now this is a proper hijack . . . :D

The only exception I take to your notes is that Powell is actually being filled first right now. I am totally obsessed with the Colorado River and the lakes. I read up on them all of the time. The affected states just came up with a new agreement that lays out conditions for when they fill which reservoir first (Havasu and Mohave are really not affected as their design is different). Today, due to the agreement, Powell is rising and Mead is falling.
Low Water Plan Thing

QC,

Powell, maybe, being filled. But, I do not trust the Corp's of Enginners to assess the issue.

They are talking out of both sides of their mouths. Remember, Powell also feeds California. A major Southwest (NV-AZ) disaster would not effect CA-seriously. Inconvenience yes, permananet damage-no.

The water will still be there.

As I see it, water flows downhill. Not even the US government can change that.

But, what do I know.

In the meantime, great boating. :)

And we are literally the laughing stock of the entire world for it.

Are you saying all Male Muslims are terrorists or potential terrorist? there are 1.3 billion Muslims world wide, say half are males do you honestly believe we can eradicate 650 million male muslims.
650-million?!? We better get started. :D

Did I not say the solution was “extreme”?

Even after we eradicate the current terrorist element form the Muslim population (as if it were even possible), we will forever and always be living under the threat of the possibility that some day another Muslim will pick up the artifacts of their faith and interrupting them in the same way Bin Laden did. When that happens it will all start over again. Fwiw, the Muslim terrorism the world is experiencing isn’t new, its just taking advantage of new technology to get a bigger bang for its buck.

But, we indeed DID vote vote for that, by our apathy.

Inaction is sometimes more powerful than action.

Look in the mirror, that is who to blame. I do so, myself.

Re: Iraq War

So how did affirmative action get into this thread?

We have affirmative action everywhere in this society. Sometimes it is called by different names.

How else would our president, admittedly a "C" student, get into Yale? It's not called affirmative action in his case, it is called a "legacy" appointment. It amounts to the same thing, however, for a different class of people.

I don't mean to pick on W---lots of other people take advantage of the same thing, and I would have too had I the opportunity, but we have *never* been a merit based society--ever...

You don't mean to pick, but you don't seem to be able to help yourself.

I don't seem to recall the "cat-calls" of a President and Vice past. One was a so called "Rhodes Scholar", one couldn't get through Divinity school.

I cannot stomach short and jaded memories.

By the way, MY merits have done me quite proud-thank you very much. Wrong again-PW.

well if my daddy had ben a congressman with big bucks maybe he could have "merited" my cousin a spot in yale and the national guard. he wasnt my cousin didnt and he died in some field a long way from home in 68.
at least my cousin did what he was tasked to do. more than I can say for most of this or the last administration majority.

at least I get to put little flags on his grave every memorial day. better than some get.

I guess if ya aint got daddy warbucks your meritless.

If ya ain't got an argument, change the subject. Seems familiar.

George Bush 41 didn't serve? Hmmm, seems he was shot down twice.

Why do the Kennedy's get a pass for all their foibles, of which their are MANY?

Viet Nam service, while I consider honorable (one of the few-no Democrats do) does not pass special priveleges.

I think all war vet's have been forgotten.

Re: Iraq War

I'm struggling with the merit badge issue too. Let's see . . . I don't have a degree, so connections didn't get me that. My family knows no one but me in the truck biz, so I didn't get any help there. I started out sweeping floors, but that was cause it looked like fun. I'm a white male, so I didn't get any help from that. I'm short, so I didn't get any tall person bennies. Hmmmmm . . . Oh, I must be like Oprah and Danny Glover, just the exception. I'm just good and everybody else is just screwed or has connections . . . yeah that's it. I'm just better than the rest of you unworthy, name dropping, connection getting, string pullin', slobs

Ya know something, it is very clear why PW is so cynical. He actually believes that individual effort is meaningless. Shhhhhh, don't tell his daughter ;)

Re: Iraq War

DJ
I tend to agree, W daddy had a taste of the horrors of war and got him a pass.
some of the kennady's got a taste, most took a pass.
in my area in the 60's there were no passes.
in fact most all of us volunteered as the alternative was pulling nets, working trawlers or crabbing.

however then like now we were the unwilling, lead by the unknowing, trying to do the impossible.
but for the most part we all (every vet) did what we had to do with honour.

I did 6 years before a service induced disability cut me off, however in six years I only met a few sailors that I would not have laid my life on the line for and they would reciprocate.

and no one I know asks for any special considerations for being a vet, we all just ask for what was promised by contract for doing what we did.
my lawsuit is still pending with the VA, looks like they will outlast or live me.
its not like I am asking for much. right now my pittance comes from the DoD and is taxable, if it came from the VA it would not be.
same tax dollar however I have to pay tax on my disabilty pay.
