Re: Just bought a Travel Trailer.

I have never had any problems with Michelin tires, they are a little bit more pricey but i do feel that i get my money's worth when it comes to vehicle handling and tire wear.
When i had my boat, the trailer came with Carlisle tires, never had any problems with those either.

GY moved ST tire production from China back to U.S. for awhile, but rumor has it that they are being made in China again. Hopefully there is better QC in place. There are no doubt still some Made in U.S.A. Marathons available. I upped a size and went to E rated Maxxis tires on my trailer. 1 year and 6,000 miles, so far so good.

Re: Just bought a Travel Trailer.

Look at the date Ken.
One year after buying my trailer the tires were cracking around the bead from dry rot.
Being the trailer was still under warranty they sent me 5 new tires without question. They also upgraded to radials for no charge.
About all the trailer builders use the same tire outlet and all it took was a phone call.
It rides great on the radials...;)

Re: Just bought a Travel Trailer.

That is for sure! A blow out can sure do some damage!
My trailer being a 2007 model had 2005 dated tires on it.

So far the replacements look great.Been on there 2 seasons now and have about 2000 miles on them.
I did buy the tire covers to keep the sun and weather off of them.

I filled my propane tanks the other day for the winter so if the power goes out we have a heated camper to stay in.
One of my propane lines was leaking between the tank and regulator.
I sprayed it with soapy water and found that one hose was leaking at the crimped fitting.
I found a replacement on Ebay from a guy that sells only RV parts.

If you ever need any parts let me know i will send you his link.;)

I broke one of my awning supports. No local dealer had them. The guy on Ebay had the whole arm and hardware for like 23 bucks..

Would really like the link Gary. Don't think I need anything right now but who knows when I will.

Re: Just bought a Travel Trailer.

I'm not surprised that your Trailblazer does well with the trailer. I just noodled around the net for a bit on the engine and it is apparently vey highly rated. Its an in-line 6 of 4.2 litres displacement, which produces 275hp and 275 ft-lbs of torque.

I have a Chevy Astro with a 4.3 litre V6 and a tow package. Mine is rated at the same max value as yours - 6,300 pounds. I've never towed that much, but have been over 5,000 a few times and the van does very well. The reason why I am pointing this out, is that as much as I love the GM 4.3 motors, I think yours outperforms mine by quite a bit. The best info that I can find on my model year, is that I get 180hp and 245 ft-lbs of torque.

To me, the most important thing is to make sure that the brake controller is adjusted properly at all times. This is true for both braking onset and amount. You can always back off on the pedal if the truck is working a little hard, but the stop part is the critical item!

Glad to hear that you've already had some fun with the new toy. We'll be waiting for the reports, start in the spring, as well!

I did some research on the Trailblazer before making the decision to get one. It does have a lot of pulling power. We had the same motor in our Jimmy as you have in your van, the 4.3 V6 and it did great as well. I do feel the Trailblazer has more woomph towing than the Jimmy though. The brake controller was trial and error the first time towing the travel trailer but I think I have it set about right after the testing on a quiet road. It's nice having a digital display on the brake controller so you know what percentage works best for each item towed.
We have had a great time so far and can't wait for spring !!!:D

Re: Just bought a Travel Trailer.

What do you set the trailer brakes at? Mine seems to work good at 3 to 4..
It will lock the trailer tires up at 5 or above.

When i first pulled it out of the dealers lot i didn't realize it was set on 9.
I slid the trailer sideways at the first stop light....lol!

Gary, we use the same 3-4 and for added umph, we also have a Six Gun bank power. The previous owner put every bell and whistle on this truck. It's a Ford 350 Power Stroke, Super Duty, quad cab. We bought it used but he used it to haul a 5th wheel around the country and took very good care of it. It's set up perfectly for hauling anything. You might even say we are a little overpowered for our little 29' travel trailer. :p

Re: Just bought a Travel Trailer.

I hear ya LF! Sounds like a great tow rig!
Better to have too much truck than not enough...;)
My Tahoe does ok with about 6k but you can sure tell it is back there when pulling hills.

If this new job works out for me i will have a 3/4 or 1 ton diesel by next spring..:D.

A guy down the road has a black F-350 quad cab.....That thing sounds wicked. You can hear the turbo winding up when he comes down the road.
Sounds like a 18 wheeler!

Gary, just realized that I did not answer your question here  sorry
My brake controller has a digital readout with increments of "5" I started at 60 and the trailer near dragged us backwards. Setting it at 30 gives nice results. It is minimum 5 and maximum 100
