Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

I have found the warmer temps, the nicer the finish (bubbles, brush marks, etc.)

80 deg and up was really helpful for laying down my US Composites epoxy.

i also thin it down with xylene before i mix in the hardener....seems to help it flow out better and penetrate wood better altho it takes more coats

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

I used a brush as well first two coats went fine but 3rd coat on almost everything (so far ) was a pita It did seem to go better on stuff that was still tacky. On most of the ones I sanded it seemed to not want to stick to some areas and go thicker in others ending up with a heavy orange peel no matter how many times I brushed it out. Wish I could help with the bubble problems . I think the floor on mine is only getting 2 coats unless I can figure out the 3rd coat problem. Hope it works out with the old johnson I imagine that needs a pressurized tank or a fuel pump conversion at least the evinrudes did.I like Zach's color choices should be a sharp little boat:)

The guy with the old Johnson is out of town. If pretty sure he's still got it and if he does it's mine.

HA that little 3 gallon tank is NOT a pressurized. I do have one though, I think it's a 6 gallon. I got it with the 10 horse. I bought a Mikuni fuel pump and will convert it over.

One more coat on the back side of the transoms and epoxy is over. Then on to Spar Varnish. I hope this is more forgiving.
More practice is needed to perfect this epoxy.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

good plan on the fuel pump....the pressurized tanks were problematic. and yeah, spar varnish flows out better than epoxy but the same rules apply: flows out far better when warm.

and the 10hp will give your son (yet another) lesson about how old doesn't automatically mean "needs to be replaced with a new shiny one from China". glad at least a few of the next generation are learning that. good for you!

Hey I only got one. Well two if you count me.

Put down the last coat of epoxy. Most of the orange peel and bubles sanded out. Looks pretty ok, maybe. Manana spar varnish.

No pictures really the same old boring stuff. This weekend should be exciting, we're geting close. Gotta run Cubscout Pack meeting tonight.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

I didn't get to fish when I was his age. I taught myself to fish when I was 12. Took my paper route money and bought a subscription to "Fishing Facts'. Bought all my own poles and reels. My ten-speed Schwinn was my boat and my car. I grew up in the burbs of Chicago (Wheaton 1970's), always plenty of parks to fish and farmers ponds. Catch fish and swipe sweet corn all summer. Favorite book at 12 "Lunkers Love Nightcrawlers".

My Dad didn't fish or hunt. Zach is going to join the Michigan Ontario Muskie Club (MOMC) with me next year. We'll fish the Great Lakes next year and every year until I die. This kid all ready has a Master Angler patch coming from the Michigan DNR. He caught a Redhorse Sucker that qualified.

Is he spoiled, dang straight. He's my partner in crime. We could only have one and almost couldn't have him, so I really cherish him. Starting next year when the Offshore is running I hope to fish with some of you guys. Until then we'll just work on boats here.

The last coat of epoxy turned out spiffy. I brushed it on with a cheap brush and had one or two bubbles in it. I popped them so they'll probably heal. Getting closer, I need to buy some 3M 5200 sealer cause the transom's going in Friday. I know it's a little project but I wanted it to turn out really nice. There's an outside chance it might.

Special Kid + Special Dad + 12 ft. Sea Scamp = Priceless Memories. Splash her this year and I'll nominate Zach and the Sea Scamp for Splash Of The Year - 2011 cause that's what it's all about!

Spoiled kid, I don't think so. Lucky kid, and lucky Dad. I think so. I've never heard any one say say they had spent too much time with their kids. I wished I would have spent more with mine, before they grew up and moved 1000 and 2500 miles away. At that age, mine was learning to torment, especially his sister, which got him in a lot of trouble. She still has little good to say about him. He got in trouble with the cops for tormenting girls. Wished I would have spoiled him, like Zach is getting. Keep it up Don.

Doesn't sound spoiled to Me at that age a couple of mine were interested in fishing and doing outdoor stuff but most (6 girls total) had no interest and by the teenage years little time for the Old Man. I think it's great that You and Zach are able to spend so much quality time together and I'm sure You will both cherish the memories forever. I still have one at home almost 18 and Her idea of quality time is "hey dad can I have some money for........ luv ya.. ".

This is a really great thread...inspiring too. Kind of serves as a reminder about why we spend time fixing up old boats to put on the water. Your boy is learning skills that he will have
Forever and can pass on some day as well. My son was always excited to hang out with dad inn the yard while I was working on the boat, and he was always willing to help. While not
Always completely productive, hey he is four, it was always time well spent. I need to find another old boat...

Keep up the good work!

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

Well I don't do great work. I don't write great stories. I'm not extremely outgoing, in fact I'm an introvert. The boat is really small. It's not in that bad of shape. So the only thing I bring to the table is I love my kid and spending time with him. If you want a good father son story this is it.

As I get into this more I realize this is a really, really great way to bond with your kids. Plus this little boat will look pretty spiffy too. I can't wait. I can't wait for his first five pound smallmouth, his first 45" muskie, his first Starchief, his first Islander....

The last coat of epoxy looked like crap. Tons of tiny bubbles, WTH. They sanded out and I got one coat of spar varnish on the seats. I think it'll still look good. Sanding seems to flatten almost everything out. If I had it do do over it would be: one coat of epoxy dry for a day then wet sand (220 grit). Repeat three times. Then varnish.

Honey do list smacked me good. I took tomorrow off work to do it. Maybe I'll sneak another coat of varnish on shhhhh. Is till need one more coat of epoxy on the outside of the transoms. Epoxy my Nemesis, I shall defeat you.

Remember everybody: If you don't own an aluminum Starcraft you should.:p

I think it's great your fixing up a boat with Zach. It's stuff like this he will remember forever. I try to take my daughter to the garage with me whenever I'm working on something. Yesterday she learned how to put tools back in the toolbox :D. I have a hard time doing that sometimes

My daughter liked working with me, til she got to be 9 or 10. My son never saw any reason to be outside.

Man, it's hard for me to think of any good reasons to be inside. Though, my job requires me to be most of the time:mad:

Mine to, but I work during the dark so I can pick and choose what hours I want to sleep or work outside. Depends on the season usually.
