Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

I still need to mount the trolling motor on the bow. I've got a 36 pound thrust Minn Kota to somehow mount. The hummingbird Platinum ID needs to go on also.

I ordered the lower gasket set for the Johnson. I plan on getting this going before end of season too. The 3 gallon tank needs to be cleaned inside too. Man are boats a lot of work.

I need a set of oars. I've trolled CraigsList for a month and I'm gonna have to buy new. I have a gift card for Bass Pro Shop so that'll soften the blow.

List:
Soda blast outside of boat
Prime and paint outside of boat
Mount up Minn Kota
Mount depth finder
Buy oars
Remove fenders, sandblast, cut and weld rusted spots, prime & paint (winter project)

Sell boat and get a 14" Mariner. Or not. I asked Zach if he wanted to upgrade to a little bigger boat. "No, no. no, no, no, no". We'll probably keep her. It's a pretty cool little boat. The kid's actually worked on it. I'm proud of him.

Another veteran move:
Dad you have to clean out the garage. My boat needs to go in there. I love it.

Hope everyone's project is going along. Go fishing, go boating and enjoy the beautiful fall colors.

Here's the old transom. Just for a comparison. I'll post the new transom picture tomorrow.

When I was that age, in the fifties, I didn't have that option either. My dad would say we are. Usually with chores like milking cows, cutting wood, working on his car. But once in a while like building me a bike from old parts, or working on my car when I got older, and when I got lucky we are going fishing. I wished I could hear him say that again. Spend time with your kids all of you, and accept their differences.

Give them little guys a big hug from me and Zach. I highly recomend you get each one their own Starcraft too.:p

If the 25 mph winds don't roll in we'll be at the mouth of the Clinton River, fishing for pike and bass.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

It's windy out now, so, no go on the boat. Maybe we'll take it for a drive and make sure the trailer and boat combo tow ok. A dry run of sorts. Maybe take a run down to the river and look at the huge waves, or the Marsh at Metro Beach. That's a fairly protected area. Gotta get this boat wet! At the very least we'll take a 2-3 mile hike along the river. We could see a salmon if we get lucky.

The lower gearcase seals came in for the QD-16 Johnson 10 horse. Practically nothing standing in my way for fixing that up now. Nothing 'cept air and oppurtunity. I'm going to tear into the carb tomorrow. Then add the Mikuni fuel pump. Next mini project is to hook up the Minn Kota 36 lb thrust electric. I'd like to mount it on the bow somehow.

That 5.5 horse Johnson never materialized. Bummer.

Zigzag, dualing Feathercrafts would be fun to watch. Teach em to handle a boat. Mine will be driving with the Minn Kota this year. He'll be welding by the time he's in sixth grade. My Dad taught me to work with tools, he didn't like fishing or boating though.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

I just had to say something here....I somehow stumbled upon this thread while looking for images or info of Ward's Sea King vessels, particularly the 18' cuddy they made in 1959. How I ended here at the last page of this delightful thread is obvious. ;)

Like a good book is impossible to put down, I stayed up late reading page after page of this thread until I reluctantly made myself stop around 3 am. I just wrapped up reading the last comments and I'm kind of sad in a way. I hope you create more inspiring threads like this one. I love your sense of humor and the sensitivity you show to the needs of your son. You allow him to grow by letting him DO. And he DOES because you SHOW him. Using boats! Absolutely wonderful!

Your son is a beautiful kid!!! And it warms me to imagine what you and he are doing together. Spending that kind of time with your kid, no matter the end result is better than any school-room teachings. His sense of self and ability to learn and pick up ideas, little nuances, etc... up will be enhanced because it's with YOU, Dad.
He is learning WAYYYYY more from this project than how to fix up an old boat. That old boat is gonna be something he will never ever forget.

To this day, my lil old jon boat I had as a kid in Miami is a sacred part of my past. The memories I have of MY little rowboat---me pulling it across the lawn, down the banks and into the canal and my private & wonderful world were rekindled as I looked at those pix of your son. I would tie the jon boat up, call my dog, and load my minnow bait can, my handlines to fish with, and old bread for bait. Having my own boat and a huge canal to explore was the best part of my childhood. I didn't have a motor, but I wore out a couple pairs of oars! Everything revolved around that boat. My faithful mutt and I would check on all the duck nests in dug out areas along the banks to determine the hatching status of ducklings, we'd fish and bring home everything from bream, bluegills, ciclids, bass, and aven a snapping turtle once! We'd "hunt" ducks, and row to the "end" of the canal, where a cement drainage pipe runnng under I-95 blocked further progress to Snapper Creek during the "wet season"...but would year round allow alligators to travel willy-nilly to and from the everglades!

Ah memories... But I didn't even have a parent participate with any of these memories--except to have provided the means by which I could create them.

I can only imagine the joy that these memories will bring to your son. And you. Keep on keepin' on!! :D

PS. My search to relive my childhood fun with a jon boat ended with a Mother's Day gift in 2005; She's a 1964 Glasspar Avalon, a 16' fish and ski. She does it all and then some! ;)

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

Thanks for the kind words Michelle. By the way that Avalon is a really nice looking boat! Mothers day gift eh, someone must really love you. That's a great present. Reading about you're childhood memories brings back some of my own. I fished the farm ponds and small man made lakes in the far burbs of Chicago. No boat, just a ten speed and a backpack. Caught a lot of fish and swiped some sweet corn too.

Zach has the greatest Mom in the world, I'm just trying to hold up my end! This boy loves to fish, and he loves boats too. My Dad never took me fishing and we never had a boat either. My Grandpa took me fishing in Oklahoma once or twice and I was hooked. My son shares the deep love of the outdoors with me. For that I'm grateful. He never complains about the weather, or launching the boat in a rainstorm. I thank God for him everyday.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

Guess what? We went fishing on Lake St. Clair in the Sea Scamp. Actually it was a protected area on the edge of the lake. it's where the Clinton River dumps into the lake. We had to dodge some big boats but we lived through it. I borrowed my BIL's 2.2 Merc which I sold him last fall. So the transom now has some indentations in it from a motor.:)

No pictures, I forgot the camera, darn. It happened though I promise. Zach was happy with the boat launching, no fish in the boat, bummer. We got to watch the marina truck pulling large 25'-30' boats out for the year. They make it look so easy. I love watching the guys who only pull their boats twice a year. So much drama trying to get them on the trailer right. I used the very end launch out of everyone's way, there's room for about 20 boats. Kinda wish we'd gone to a Small out of the way lake, but I love St. Clair.

There it is in a nutshell. Boat floats and a little boy is happy. We still need to strip and paint her. We're both looking forward to that. Maybe a Starcraft camper is in the future for mom. That 12 footer would sit right on top of it. Northern Michigan is calling, we'll camp next to a lake and everyone will be happy.

I think this is it until spring. We might heat up the garage and paint this winter, but I doubt it. I've got indoor projects to do. Cabinets, ceramic tile......

Congrats on the splash. I guess Zach kept you near enough the straight and narrow to get her done. Got a lot of indoor projects myself, but still intending on some work on the boat. Good luck in the future, both with Zach and your starcrafts.

BD and Z - congrats on putting dents in the transom, and the splash, sounds like a great time. I know the feeling of not putting any fish in the baot but it still makes for a great day.

Good luck on the interior projects, I too have many to do according to my wife.

We will look forward to seeing the paint job you come up with.

good job!! maybe if i had an eager youngun pushing me, i'd make faster progress......

fodder for our dreams is in short supply these days....hence all the $ people waste on the lottery etc....you gave the kid dream fodder to last him til spring. don't blame us if he wants to go ice fishing this winter tho.............

Zach has a pretty great dad too. i was just listening (through a space-time wormhole) to what he has to say about you when he's 65 and we're history, and he really appreciates that he had one of the few fathers who actually spent time with his kid instead of just $, and taught him how to do things.........

Too kind bro. What's actually happening is he's got a bottom feeder dad, time or money, hmmm. What would a bottom feeder do? Time, it doesn't cost me anything!

Let's not forget there are quite a few fathers in the Starmada whose parenting skills far exceed mine. A ton at Cub Scouts too, lots at karate class also. On my binge drinking forum there's not a lot though. That's probably why I only have a few hundred posts there. I'm a family guy.:p

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

The weather was nice here for Thanksgiving weekend, I took off Wednesday and got 5 days off! Took Zach fishing Wednesday and they were having a sale on Pike and Walleye black Friday so we went then too.

Here's a few pictures from the Marsh on Lake St. Clair from Wednesday and Lakeville on Friday. One boat on that lake Friday, a sailboat. Was super tot have the lake to ourselves.
