i'm with ya on that Jas....my ideal home would have lots of covered porches and a "soft" transition from inside to outside so you could live outdoors or semi outdoors most of the year. desk jobs suck!

My son is 26 now, and still doesn't like being outside. And back to the epoxy, I'll trade with you guys. Started sealing my engine cover plywood today. Don't think I've got enough left to finish, but I'll trade with you guys and your bubbles. My barns right next to an old apple orchard, andwith all the windfalls now, come yellow jackets. 8 pieces to seal and I bet there were at least 50 yellow jackets stuck to it after about 6 hours. Maybe I ought to go back to putting it on in cold wet weather like I did this spring. I only had small bugs then.

I wonder why the bee's like epoxy so much ? Maybe just because it's shiny?

Still doesn't like being outside heyyou? No fishing or hunting in Idaho? If I lived out there I'd be salmon fishing or sturgeon fishing as long as there wasn't ice. Mule deer, elk or antelope, hmmm tasty. I lived in Wyoming for a few years loved it. At the airbase in Cheyenne. If Icould move the Great Lakes out to Wyomoing or Colorado I'd be a really happy guy. I got lucky I guess, mine is very outdoorsy.

We were watching Michigan Out of Doors, the opening scene shows a dad and soon walking up on a downed buck in a cornfield. He turns to me and says "I wanna get a bow and arrow and shoot that Reindeer in the head. Then I'm gonna eat him". Cool, Whitetail Deer buddy, we don't have Reindeer in Michigan. Crossbow is legal in Michigan now, need to buy two. Mom's going to be so happy!

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

I think it's great your fixing up a boat with Zach. It's stuff like this he will remember forever. I try to take my daughter to the garage with me whenever I'm working on something. Yesterday she learned how to put tools back in the toolbox :D. I have a hard time doing that sometimes

My tool box (roll around) is too small for all my tools. They are everywhere, can't find nothing. My son likes too empty all the droors out and load the stuff into his Radio Flyer wagon. Makes clean up very fun, of which he doesn't seem to feel the need for. Oh well at least he's playing with tools. It's time kids remember not stuff. He woke up today and asked if I had to work, when I told him it's Satrurday he yelled "YEAAA". Made me feel like a million bucks.

The wife left me a list to do BEFORE I work on the boat. Wash the vertical blinds, wax the floor.... no mention of spar varnish anywhere. Maybe she forgot??? I'm not going to push my luck, she's been realy busy and I need to man up. Gotta run there's a bottle of future wax with my name on it.

P.S. Seats have 2 coats of spar on them, got pics too. I'll share them in a minute. They look spiffy, not perfect but nice, you have to get right down on them to see the imperfections.

Wive's are sometimes forgetful. I bet it just slipped slipped her mind to put spar varnish on the list. It should have been first thing. And hunting was out for my son, he hated loud noises. If he paid attention, he could be a good shot with a recurve bow tho. Fishing was too boring for him.

I can definitly understand the loud noises. My son hates loud noises. The Paper-Jamz giutar he got for Christmas is baically unused because it plays too loud, and it's not loud. He's got paitience for stuff he likes and none for homework etc.. How much is autism and how much is him being 7, dunno.

I put spar varnish on her list along with college football.:D Last coat of varnish was applied.

*My List*
1) Mount rear lights, I've got 2 pieces of angle iron that just needs to be mounted.
2) Put seats in boat, tommorrow the're still tacky
3) Put transoms in the boat. Tommorrow, tacky.
4) Touch up with white paint, transom caps in a few little spots.
5) Frenders. oooooh. Buy new or weld up the old. (Mini-project) or don't laugh .....duct tape the one that's rusted and re-mount. Fix properly over the winter.
6) Johnson 10: rebuild carb, mount Mikuni fuel pump. Order lower gasket set and OMC fittings.
7) Fish!!!!
8) Strip and paint, next year cause it's getting cold out. It was 44 degrees this morning, nice pike weather, bad painting weather.
9) Trade up to a 14' Mariner or KingFisher (probably never happen, Zach's choice)

Still owe pics, half way done with the wife's list. Gotta roll. Go Michigan.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

Loud noises, not responding when called, spinning things, and worst of all understanding what is meant are all autistic traits. Mine overheard me tell someone the song Jose Ceurvo was written about my first wive, and he went to school saying I knew Dottie West and the author of the song, assuming since they wrote it about her personally. That's an example, but only one of the way they understand. And the duct tape on fenders, I've went one better, epoxy over that, a couple coats, and repaint. Lasted 3 years til I replaced the fenders. It had a big 3" split, about 1/4" separated, and rust. Hey I was born a farmer, I can use farmer fixes. I bought one of those Costco portable garages for hvy snow load. Figuring to work on mine during the winter too.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

Everyone keeps talking about winter  Not a good sign I'm hoping we still get some more warm weather here (last couple years have been pretty mild through october ) I really want to get some paint on and do the rest through the winter and hopefully get some salmon in the spring but it isn't looking good. Sounds like great progress Don and only a short list left until the fish part keep at it.

We have earned our white belt. There is a display rack showing all the belts and the order you earn them. There's like 8 or 10 belts and he's got the first one. He points to the very top belt, the black one and says " I want that one, the black belt". Ok son, go get it.

He's having fun and this will help his autism. There are a few kids on the spectrum in the classes too, so autism is no suprise to the sensei's there. I talked to them about it and they said don't sweat it, we deal with this every day. I think this is going to work out pretty good.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

Congrats Zach, keep it up. My son had his second belt and was ready to go for his third when he quit. With hard work comes the benefits. And I think the seat looks good too. And yoop, went from the 90's to the 60's in 2 days, then back to the 90's, and we're in our 70's now, and breezy when it cools off. This is probably what you have to look forward to. Rain is supposed to start in a couple days. They keep putting it off, and that's what we need. After near record precip til July, it stopped and only 1 measurable since end of July which had 1/4 inch a week ago. That means fall is here and winter's not far behind. Half my shop is on vacation for hunting.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

Sorry guys, no boat working today. That breaks my heart but SWMBO told me "today is not a day to work on boats". She had the double cast iron look on her face so did stuff around the house again today.

On a bright note Zach personalized the front seat and transom. Apparantly while the varnish was still tacky he placed both hands on it. left sets of 7 year old prints all over. My fault I should have kept the garage closed where monkey boy didn't have access to them. I think he was trying to make "Michigan" on them. You know lower penninsula and upper.

Well, sand and one more coat will fix it. When I paint the Offshore I'll have Zach dip his hands in paint and we'll put "Michigan" on sides of her. He's heard me say this a bunch of times, one day I'll come home and who knows where I'll find hand prints. Cool thing about living in this great state, you can throw your hand up and point to your hand map. Let's go hunting here, and fishing there. What do you guys in Florida do?

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

Sorry no updates in a while. Karate, Cubscouts and homework have taken their toll on the Sea Scamp. I did manage to hang the lights on a bracket I made in the shop. One less problem anyway.

Re-varnished the seats, for the last time. They look pretty good, not perfect but really nice. The last coat I used a foam brush on them. That's the way to go, cheap brstle brushes leave a streaky finish and always drop hairs in the finished product.

Mahogany is such a beautiful wood. I can see why people use it.

I'm lucky in a lot of ways. He has tons of patience for fishing and working on his little projects. He'll sand on a piece of wood for a while, drill some holes file it. He's always making something.

He has no patience for homework with Mom or Dad. We are at the point of finger pointing with the school, he can't read (beginning K level reader, he's in 2nd grade), school blames the parents, I blame Autism and an inadequate school plan. He needs more, one on one time with a tutor at school. School says they are doing every thing they can, Children's Hospital says Zach is capable of a lot more. I have an advocate from ARC services and she's coming to the next IEP (individual education plan) meeting with us.

I'm not getting the schools best effort. That ends on Thursday, I'll be nice but the bull ends. I want a plan and a feedback loop in the plan. Weekly evaluations on his reading, monthly reviews on the plan. No progress, then get a new plan. They have an autism specialist on staff at the school. I want her in the loop too. The Doctor at the Autism Center tells me Zach is underperforming and I believe him.

Polished up the piece that goes over the transom. Took it into the shop and had my buddy hit it on a wheel with some rouge.

Haha, didn't even notice the word card. His speech teacher has us putting cards on evrything to help with his reading.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

The previous owner had put a funky partial transom in and drilled 4 new holes in the boat. Two below the water line!

Bought me some HTS-2000, aluminum brazing rod. Attempted to fill in the holes, using a propane torch and the rods. I couldn't get it to stick. It looks so easy in the videos on their website.
http://www.aluminumrepair.com/video_new.asp

After some research I figured the propane wasn't hot enough. I got a map cannister instead. It worked. The key is to get the base metal really hot, 750 degrees Fahrenheit. Then melt the rod on the base metal and apply a Little heat to the rod too. Everything needs to be hot or it won't work. It takes some practice.

looks OK. I need to file or sand it down. After cleaning it up I'll give a full assessment.

Way to go Don an Zack, boating is just another activity that can create great bonds and life long memories. Like when my father tossed me from a jon boat at age 8 into a tank my first swimming lesson. Aw what a fine memory lol.... i agree with jasoutside lets have some before and after pics.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

You're getting there on the boat. Keep him interested in things. We had to have our own psychologist, and lawyer in meetings with the school before they would help us. But that had went a lot further, and the law was involved. They had known since he was in second grade, but kept saying he didn't have it. Finally our psyc. walked them thru their tests and proved it to them. It's surprising how many have been diagnosed with it since then. Most have ended up suing the school district to get any help. Hugh was a good reader when he started school, as my wife had taught him. Sci fi and fantasy books were all he was really intersted in tho. He tested with an IQ of 118. I've heard most autistic kids have high IQ's it's just getting them to use it. They don't communicate the same way as we do. And I hate to agree with anybody, but some before and after shots side by side would be interesting.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

I think autism remains a mystery to most. Unless your'e on the front line raising one at home it's hard to explain. The parents and the schools didn't ask for these kids but this is the front line. Homes with an autistic child in them experience a much, much higher divorce rate. It's natural that same stress spills over into the education arena. I'm a lot more prepared now than in the previous years past. I think it's going to work out better this year. I'm hoping we've moved past the finger pointing. They told me last year I need to spend more time working in the garage with him. I laughed inside. Maybe a couple of more boats would help eh.

Thanks for letting me vent heyyou. You've been there so you can understand. Now onto the Sea Scamp:

It's ready for the water. Not pretty on the outside but fishing is on the agenda for Saturday morning!!! Zach saw my down vest on the the other day, he asked a bunch of questions and decided he'll need one for fall fishing. I plan on using the boat until mid November.
oct2010001.jpg

Seats installed and fully functional.

I got the soda blaster out and played around a bit.
oct2010002.jpg

Works like a charm. My air compressor is too small to run it though. I'll borrow a buddies or roll by the shop at night and plug into the big one. I'll strip the outside and paint it before snow.
