Smooth and a warm redish brown. I'd say 90-95% like new. Pictures don't do this wood justice, I love mahagony. A masterpiece of a wood.

Moved the strap underneath the eye hook. What do you guys think? I'll shorten it (winch post) maybe this winter, when I have a little more time.

Well that's all the progress we have. Hoping next Saturday or Sunday it goes in the water.

You're makin good progress. Mahogany looks great. You'll have it finished in no time the way you're going. Birch plywood should make a good transom, better than the lumber esp. And I can't see the way it's riding on the trailer, but you should have lowered it a couple inches which is what GA boater wanted. The boat was off the front roller.

Great progress and sounds like a great time with Your son. I think the winch looks a lot better if it's sitting on the bow roller now should be good to go.

Don I see you have one of Pauls relatives helping in addition to your son. Very cool.

Nice project, I have a 12' sea king , "they" say Starcraft made 'em, The thing that drives me crazy as it has no plug, always fills up with the rain. But it doesn't have that beautiful Mahogany. Keep up the great work.

I found what might be a twin to Treasure Island. http://spokane.craigslist.org/boa/2569476255.html You might notice it isn't sitting on the front roller either. It also doesn't have any wood in the transom. You might also notice the old Chevy in the first pic.

Well we didn't do much today. It was chilly out and I had enough messing around with this boat. It was 100 degrees out a couple of days ago and today 62 degrees for a high.

We got the transom all finished but no epoxy. Too cold today. I made a spindle sander out of the drill press and Zach carved up a piece of scrap like a fish. I actually kind of looked like a fish. He then sanded his index finger bloody. Good lesson, and he was warned numerous times. A band aid and a little whining and he was good to go.

I'm not looking forward to epoxy and varnish. I need to man up and do this tommorrow.

Oh yea first day of school tommorrow. This could be good or bad, time will tell.

Heyyou, that looks like a 55 Chevy. My Dad had one when I was a kid. Straight six and three on the tree, NO seat belts. I'm suprised we all lived through the sixties.

Epoxy will set up in the 50's. We all need a break sometimes. Varnish always gives me a headache tho.

BOAT RASH!

sounds like Zach got an intro to power tools. good for him to learn that those things BITE with the ones that just abrade some skin tho. tell him that it's REALLY his boat now, since he's put not just his sweat but now his blood into it.

this is so BEYOND COOL that you're doing this with him. wish my dad had gotten into similar with me when i was a kid.

Well then I have no excuse. We did need a break though. mom's working this afternoon so homework for today is fitting the transom and the transom piece that the motor bolts on to the outside back of the boat. Sure wish I knew the name of that piece, outer transom maybe. I dunno, there's two pieces outer long and inner trapezoidal shaped.

Hey Barato, he got bit pretty good. Asked for a band aid and howled too. No sympathy from Dad, I've worked in 5 foundries an a few machine shops. Been bit hard a few times. Thank the Lord I still have all ten FULL fingers.

I was really impressed with the little guy when he claimed the boat. He's doing as much work as a 7 year old can. He loves working with his hands. He'll be welding by 12. We're going to build a sand rail one day too. He looks over my work and he'll tell me "you did a good job Dad". I let him know when I struggle with something too.

Fatherhood is the hardest job I've ever had, hands down. Somedays I think I'm doing good, some days I suck, just feeling my way through it all. Thanks guys.

No plug would be bad. When I saw this was a Starcraft I jumped on it. Glad I didn't get the Sears glasser now. He won the alien at the fair, I'm happy he didn't get the dolphin like mom suggested. Aliens are much cooler, ya just can't beat little green men. Can't beat mahagony either, classy wood.

Note band aid on finger from overzealous sanding! Right back on that horse though.

Looks close enough eh? That knot bothers me, it didn't before but now it does. I think that's the good side though. Oh well the 10 horse motor will trash it anyway. you live you learn. At least I was smart enough to keep my hand out of the sander. Yea that's right I'm talking smack against a 7 year old. It's tough love.

You two are doing a great job. Wished I could have got my son interested in something like that at any age. He's finally at 25 trying to learn household repair. And good luck finishing your projects.
