Bwana
I envy you bud..what a great reason to jump Outta bed in the morning.
Don't finish too soon..make it last
:0)

Still got another one Kev (Offshore), after that I'm sure I can scare something up. Half man stills has a very valuble lesson to learn from Dad. Trading up! That 12' will turn into a 14' holiday or maybe a 15' Jet. Who knows how far we can push Mom. Of course I'm doing this for the kid you understand.

Time for the second coat of epoxy!

Heyyou325;
Thank you for reminding me of my blessings. Enjoy the time with yours eh.

Happy football Saturday guys!

Took the bow cap and transom caps to work with me.

Mixed up some vinegar and water 50/50 and soaked the blasted parts in the mixture for about 1/2 hour.

Zic Chromate self etching primer from West Marine $15.00 a bomb can, ouch. Their price are double anywhere else.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

I primede the zinc chromated parts in gray primer after ZC. I don't know if I should have or neede to but I did. Sprayed them white afterwards too. They are drying in the garage now.

Got two coats of epoxy on the transoms and seats. Epoxy bubled up and Ihad to keep tipping it. Ifinally moved the pieces out of the sun and the bubbles slowed down a lot. I have some small bubles but they'll sand out prior to spar varnishing.

3 coats epoxy
3 coats of spar varnish
unless I get lazy. As long as the previuos coat of epoxy is still tacky there's no need to sand. Tommorrow I'll have to wet sand with 220 grit for the last epoxy coat.

PITA, wish I was done.

Wow I really like those transom caps wish mine had stars on em. Those transom pieces are so tiny what a great project . You might not want to trade this one by the time Your done . I had some problems with epoxy raising/bubbling/orange peeling looking stuff on a couple pieces as well not sure what caused it but is a pita .

Zach's job was to keep me from getting lonely. I didn't let him touch any of the chemicals. Oh he still did. he mixed up a batch of epoxy and hardener while I was busy. Just to help out, had his school hoodie on too and his school shoes. Lucky for me he didnt spill a drop. I narrowly avoided the lecture of how I don't watch him amd there is no adult supervision when mom's at work. Too bad, It's been at least a day or two since I heard it.

He got out of bed at 5:00 am this morning to work on his boat. What a kid.

Evertbody out there, give your kids a big hug. A a big wet kiss right between the eyes. If they squirm do it again, follow it up with a palm punch and a nuggie. Tell them you love em. Watch a football game with them or Paula Dean's cooking. take em fishing too. And tell em you love em.

Mine insisted on going to Meijers to get white paint tonight, He crawled up into the buggie and slept the whole time we were ther. What a kid. Tommorrow I'll tell you how he did in Karate. He wants to break a board in two!

Peace out from Motown.

Your project looks great! I'm sure you won't have any problem convincing Zach of the joys of trading up, or adding to the fleet.

I love the corner caps with the stars too, very classy:)

Since you're using the expensive epoxy and going the whole nine yards I think you'll keep this boat a while:D

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

This resto project has taken a strange twist. You guys are right, Zach is THE sole owner of this boat. He will decide if and when it gets sold. My guess is never, ever. My dreams of getting into a 14' or maybe a 15' are well, done. it's his boat, I'm just the crew cheif, he's the driver. He's taken full ownership and he's not afraid to work on it. He has now assumed the leadership role and is making decisions also.

Decision #1: boat will be stripped ad painted. For the last 2 years he's sat on my lap and gone through thread after thread with me. You just paint your boat, everybodies doing it.

Decision #2: White is the color. Almost was blue, it's his favorite color.

Decision #3: Transom caps and bow cap also in white.

Desicion #4: The "Star" in the center of the transom caps will be black.

I humbly await further orders.

We worked on the boat again today. Epoxy and wet sanding. Boy I suck at epoxy. If I had to do it all over again, I'd sand between every coat. Wet sand with a 220 grit. If you get real close you can see ripples. I wet sanded and put on another coat. We'll see what happens.
Wet sanding:

More wet sanding:

White paint, it came out awesome. It doesn't match the boat though. I should say the boat does not match the caps.

More white photos. Different background.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

I've got a line on a 1955 5-1/2 horse Johnson. A guy at work attended a swap meet for his gun club and another member had it. He tried to get $20 for it and no one wanted it. I'm hoping Monday morning it's sitting in the shop for me.

Picked up a 3 gallon gas tank with the primer bulb for $10. Looks good on the outside, inside is scary. Ya, it's got old fuel in it still. Zach looks at it and pointing at the tank and says, "man run motor with this tank?" He's language impaired so his sentences are short when he can't find the words. I told him it needs to be cleaned because the fuel is old. The thoughts are there the words to come.

So another mini project to do. Sweet, pictures to follow.

Hey Mike (HA), what do you mean the good stuff. I paid a bundle for that stuff (west system). Can I get it cheaper?

That '55 5.5hp is a good motor, and will match your 10hp if I remember correctly. Get it for sure.

Hopefully it's still available. Only in Michigan would a OB not sell for that cheap right now.

I sure hope things turn around soon, even though I don't mind the buyer's market on boat/motors.

Clarkcraft.com and uscomposites.com will both be able to ship some two-part epoxy resin cheaper than West Systems, even though I feel bad since their product is excellent and they are here in Michigan.

Is that 3 gallon tank a two-line pressurized one?

If so...I'm jealous, they are really rare and cost more than the common 6 gallon pressurized tanks. Score for you if it is.

You really can't run 6 gallons of fuel thru one of these 5.5hp Johnnyyrudes in one day if you tried.

And yes, I have tried.;):D:D

Sorry for the long post, lots to say tonight I guess.:)

If you ever need parts for that motor... look what I uncovered in my pile today! The green 10 has been robbed of a few things but I've had the red 15 running a few years ago, just my situations have let it go to the wayside of all of my projects....

BTW... my son and I have worked on many boats together. It has brought us together quite a bit and he has learned SO MUCH about working on things by hanging with Dad...

That's another one of my "bargains" I got... I call it a "Tiajuana Taxi".... actually a really nice Bayliner Montery, 23 ft w/ mercruiser 260 (Chevy 350) you can get for a really decent price... sitting on a I-beam aluminum trailer... just so big and awkward to handle that I've gone to a small aluminum v-hull fishing boat and haven't had that one in the water in about 5 or 6 years... It really needs a new home and some TLC.

Of course, this is Zach's thread... I don't want to hijack it...

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

Did nothing on the boat today and that kills me. We went to speech therapy today.

Speech on Monday
Cub Scouts on Wednesday
Karate Thursday and Saturday
Catechism needs to be worked in there too.

Yikes.

Don't worry about hi-jacking the thread. Chatter away boys, doesn't bother me at all I kind of like it.

I wonder if I set the alarm real early if I can wet sand the seats in the bath tub. This would allow me to get more coat of epoxy on everything. Then I can move into the spar varnish. I really want to put this thing together this weekend. Oh yea more bubbles in the last coat of epoxy. WTH. I must be doing something wrong. Maybe they will sand and out and no one will be the wiser. Lots of questions not enough answers.

See ya later.

I built an epoxy coated bar top once. I worked the bubbles out with a heat gun as it cured.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

I've had good luck with epoxy putting it on with a small roller, and coming back in maybe an hour, or less, before it sets up on the roller. Re rolling everything, it gets red of runs, drips, ripples, and bubbles. You can do this until it gets too hard on the roller. I suppose that may give it a textured finish. I usually find epoxy easier to work with than poly, and recently get better results than paint. Still might repaint mine with easy poxy, over the rustoluem. I never liked the finish I got the last 2 times I used it.

Weird on the bubbles. When I did mine, I did get tons of bubbles on the first coat. Sanded them down and then got next to none on the second. I applied mine with a cheap chip 3" chip brush.
