Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

Any suggestions for matching the green on the inside????? I like the inside color and would like to keep it close to original. Home Depot will not tint Rustoleum.

Try a paint store or local hardware store that custom mixes. You may not be able to get Rustoleum tinted, but they should be able to hook you up with an oil based industrial paint that is comparable to Rusto. I used Muralo 'Super-Tred' on mine. I am biased though, my girlfriend sells it in our store.

Boat looks great so far, glad to see you and Zach are back to it

I don't know of any places that will mix rustoleum. For my blue, I use half sail blue (I think it is, have to relook), and half white. Rustoleum says it's ok to mix, but you have to have an easy enough mix to get it the same again. Not as close as the dye or tint they put in mixing, but close. Good luck

First coat. We brushed it on and thinned it first with mineral spirits. There are a few runs which will need to be wet sanded out.

Have you guys had better luck with a roller or brush?

Best with a sprayer, but definitely a roller over a brush. But I go over it with a brush afterwords to take care of runs. After finishing, and before it starts to set up. I quickly brush over all of it for any runs.

Well I learned that the hard way:facepalm:. I'll wet sand then roll two more coats on.

Lesson learned, soda blast for paint removal. Spray for putting paint back on. On my short list of equipment to get; a decent compressor and spray gun. Wait a minute my buddy has a bigger compressor and a spray gun. hmmm. And lucky for me I just stopped over to see him after shoulder surgery. ok maybe I can salvage this paint yet.

Zach helped paint. His painting looks as bad as mine. Or his looks as good as mine.

Good for Zac painting too. If you're buying a sprayer, get a gravity feed. You won't have just a little paint left over everytime. But you still want to run something over the paint a little while after you've finished to keep from getting runs. I'm not a great painter either, and that has saved me a lot of sanding.

Wagner makes a cheap HVLP turbine rig that i've been pretty happy with for spraying anything this side of latex. easier to clean than a traditional gun too. i think it was abt $80-100. i'll be using this to blow the varnish onto the appearance-critical large panels (just brushing the small ones cuz foam brushes are even easier to clean ;)) pretty sure this would work great for enamel too.

on paint, Ace hdwe sells their own house brand faux-rusto which i've been very happy with and they're glad to tint it to whatever color.

I wet sanded all the poopiness out of the paint job. I used 1000 grit wet sanding paper. Ready for coat #2. I'm going to try to borrow a spray gun and compressor for the next two coats. My buddy painted his Lemans and it din't look half bad. I'll use his set up and borrow him. Maybe I'll buy the good HF gun and use it for epoxy and paint (ooops I almost misspelled paint again).

Barato; Ace will tint, I'm on it. Is it oil based like the Rust?

Heyyou; my friends gun is a gravity fed. He had trouble with the other type too.

the good HF gun :D:D

you're getting serious if you're going to wet sandoing with 1000 grit between coats. great that you're teaching Z how to do it right.
yes, the Ace stuff is oil based. would i send my bro off to paint a boat with latex?

Ace it is for the interior color. I'll get a bunch of cards from HD and match up a Behr card to the current green inside color, then take it to Ace. Ahh oil based enamel. I love it. I've got some sand stuff, Zinsser, Roll-A-Tex, Texture Additive. We'll add this to the interior paint for a grippy surface. Then sprinkle some white drops to make it look factory fresh on the inside.

Well I put on a second hull coat. I used a small foam roller this time. Big difference, nice even coat! I thinned the paint 50/50 with mineral spirits. About the consistency of 2% milk. I went on at first with hundreds of tiny bubbles, after a minute it smoothed right out. There are a couple of small runs which will sand right out. I'll wet sand with 1000 again. Then another coat and sand with 1200--1500. Last coat I'll buff or something. Dunno yet.

The mood is optimistic here now. Weather is great, paint looks good. To quote Zach, "my boat looking pretty good". Me think so too. Won't be perfect but will look real good. looking forward to being done with paint. Then outboard time. Yea motors, rings, honing, a magneto.:D

I'm not sure about buffing but wet sanding between coats is pretty standard. You have to remember boats are way different than cars. Our boats aren't Moomba's either. They are fishing rigs, a totally different standard in my mind. The lapstrake design is tougher to deal with. I won't buff because I'm afraid I'll burn the edges of the lapstrakes. I'm wet sanding because it's the recipe I'm following. That and runs force me to.

To directly answer your question Jas. Yes wet sand.

Good looking paint job, nice to see you Zac working together on the project.

He loves working on the boat. Tonight he wants to wet sand and paint. OK I'll let him but if he keeps sanding through the primer to bare aluminum like last time..... I'll have to fix it. He's gotta learn. Whoops swimming lessons start in a few.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

OK I have evaluated last nights coat of paint. Minor runs. nothing like the brush though. I'll put less on the roller and see if that does a better job. I'm going to sand with a finer than 1000 grit in between coats this time. I'd shoot a picture but it looks perfect from 5 feet away.

Rats, I can't find my stash of sandpaper. i might have to run out to the hardware store. I tried sanding with the 1000 but it seems too course this time. I think that in itself is progress. Maybe I can get another coat on it tonight. I doubt it 7:40 is kind of late to start.

Night all, and good luck on your projects.
