As far as additives I think the gear lube is different because of water intrusion. Water displaces oil I think it has an additive to help the oil and water mix.

Ayuh,.... In all my years, the only difference I've found is,....

They add a pretty colored dye to the marine gear oil, where as automotive gear oil is natural amber colored,.....

Btw,... I run run only Syn-oil gear lube, either Mobil 1, 75W-90, or Pensoil 75W-90,...
'n both will still lube things, with nearly 1/2 the case fulla water,....

Years ago, I worked for a small marina, when changin' gear oil in the many outboards, 'n I/Os, the replacement oil came outa a 5 gallon pail of Napa 90W ep hypoid gear oil,....

I think what I have gathered is that it comes down to preference and is not so much about the oil as it is about the marketing and personal beliefs. If either one will work just fine then marketing and packaging is what makes the 'marine' stuff more expensive. I can't see a good reason why to go with it them.

I fired off a email to warren oil and will report back with their answer though im now slowly and stubbornly starting to believe I may be wrong ,lol.Maybe all my manuals are or were pre gl-5 standard and anti foaming is now widely used as it wasn't back in the olden days?

When your prop shaft seals go out and your oil is a milkshake but you don't know that and you store the motor for the winter and discover siezed up lower unit gears/bearings THEN you will discover the need for MARINE GEAR OIL . And the need for changing or at least looking at the oil.

If you're going to winterize your beloved engine for long time periods, you should winterize with new gear oil of your prefference, that way will know if lower seals are doing their homework right or time to change them.

Happy Boating
