Should there be some sort of bushing for the shift lever to pivot in in an MC-1? My housing has what appears to be a stainless steel sleeve for the shaft to pivot in but there is a whole lot of slop in it. It doesn't appear to be worn, nor does the shaft itself.
Looking through the manuals it seems that some models do have a bushing, some don't, and some are recommended to be removed if they did have them?
Should the lever shaft be a good fit through the housing or is there meant to be a lot of play there to allow the shaft to self align between the upper and lower shift shafts?

Cheers

You are doing this a lot. I have read quite a few of your threads and it's not until well into the post that I can work out WTF you're on about. Please be more descriptive early in the body of the post, not just a vague description in the thread title, as to exactly what you're talking about.

If you have a sleeve, leave it there. If you don't have a sleeve, don't put one in. Yes, there is a lot of clearance between the intermediate shift shaft and the housing, it's completely normal. As long as the shoe on the bottom of the upper shift shaft is a close fit to the top of the intermediate shift shaft and the splines of the intermediate shift shaft are mating up nicely with the lower shift shaft, then you're good to go. And don't forget to put the rubber washer and the stainless steel washer on the lower shift shaft before you put the upper and lower housings back together.... And make sure the quad seal is in place (for the oil gallery). Then do a pressure and vacuum test...

Ok, in future I will try to be more clear when I ask a question. Being new to sterndrives I thought I was doing OK?

My sterndrive in thirty-odd years old, and I don't know what's been done to it over the years prior to me buying it last year. What I was wanting to confirm is whether there SHOULD be a bush (plastic, etc?) inside the stainless sleeve that is there currently, or not? Just because there isn't one in there at the moment wouldn't necessarily mean that one hasn't been removed at some point over time ( in the same way that the mechanic forgot to reinstall the washers above the shift shaft seal, causing me to lose reverse!).

I'm looking at page 3A-14 in Mercruiser manual #6 where it is talking of removing the bush in the R and later models. According to the GLM catalog this bush is OEM part number 23-32632. Is this the same for the MC-1?

Cheers

If your drive is an MC-1, why are you using a manual for later models? Use the manual for the drive, that would be manual #4.... Here's a link if you don't have it.

Haven't we had this conversation before?

It also says quite clearly that the bush is to be discarded if the drive is an Alpha One SS, which yours is not, so I don't even see why the question came up....

But manual #6 is sooo much easier to read than #4!

Seriously though, I use #6 then look it up in #4 after I find the general location.

That's my thoughts exactly! I find manual 4 just doesn't have the detail that 6 does. It was my understanding that the 'R' drive was virtually the same as the MC1, it just had some cosmetic changes. Maybe I'm wrong.

Now, before this thread goes off on a tangent I think I will end it here.
