I know...I know - Some people are saying "minor??!! on a Bayliner Capri??!!"

Here it is - A friend of mine restores boats. I had him take a look at my boat to give me any "suggestions" he might have. He gave it a fairly thorough going over and has concluded that the flooring in my boat is in pretty good shape.

But, in order for me to preserve the flooring currently in the boat I am going to do the following:

Tear up the carpet on the bottom only (leaving the carpeting on the sides, and around the seat bases, etc)

Sand current flooring

Cover with fiberglass resin

Recarpet.

The ultimate goal here is to get another 3-4 more years out of the boat, and then be able to hand it off to another family to enjoy for the same amount of time (maybe more).

The interior/exterior of the boat is in very good condition - The engine runs great - So I figure if I semi-refinish the flooring, it should be a good boat for years to come.

The question I have is: Has this been done before? I thought about documenting it on here with pictures etc - but if it has already been done, then I won't do it.

Thoughts?

What!!?!! "minor??!! on a Bayliner Capri??!!". Lol!

I think your plan is fine for what you are after. Epoxy resin might be better than Poly resin for what you want to do.

Since you plan on tearing out the carpet then why not cut an inspection hole in the deck and take a closer look at your stringers and foam and such. At least then you would know for sure what's going on underneath.

Regardless of whether or not this has been previously done , I recommend you document it and post pics here.

Agree totally with with a few inspections holes, but I'd add a layer of matt along with the resin on the deck.....matt is cheap...resin alone doesn't help a whole lot. Might be right about the epoxy alone, but I think price wise I'd go with poly and matt.

I think I will do that....not a bad idea. After seeing the "Bad Mistake...Searay" thread....it might not be a bad idea!

Jay....yea man...you are a STUD! Me - not so much! Haha!

I am afraid to take a look at the stringers after seeing your thread!!!!

Funny though - I kept thinking about your thread while my buddy was telling me to recoat the floor!!!

The difference is - YOUR boat is worth restoring - and while mine is in great shape for it's age - It just wouldn't be worth it to me to replace stringers, etc. And energy.....How in the heck do you have the energy to do that!

Re: Minor flooring project on 96 Bayliner Capri

bay liners have glass stringers.....the inspection hole is your ski locker,,,,,,if you cut a hole aft of that...you will be into the gas tank.....either side of the stringer is foam....so an inspection cover will just let water in where it is not supposed to be.

if you just resin coat the deck....you are waisting your time.....poly resin needs fiberglass to do anything.
but.....i dont really understand......because your deck is allready glassed in.....you can scuff it and add another layer of csm if you want......but your absolute best.....is to leave it alone....and keep it under cover.....you can also add another bilge blower in the ski locker.....and just leave that thing on.....if it burns out...so what....its 30 bux.....that fan will do more for you than reglassing an allready good floor.

My old Bayliner 1950 was very solid. I did a resto-mod on it. See the link below my signature line. Maybe consider snap-in carpet. This makes cleaning easy, and helps keep the boat dry.

cuda - Yes! I read every bit of that thread a couple years ago...that was some great work!

My personality is the type where once I get into something, I "get into it"....BUT - I have promised my wife that I would NOT do that with this boat....lol She was already bummed when she saw me taking off all the decals/pinstriping so I could "buff" it - I told her that I needed to get new striping, etc that it was 14yrs old!!!! But she wasn't too thrilled...Hahaha

The bottom line is: She knows my work schedule, kids sports schedule, etc - and knows it will be darn near impossible for me to to anything too major and have the boat ready for those rare weekends where the family can hit the lake.

Hmmm.....you do have me thinking again about that Durabak.....Gonna check it out.

Question: Was your boat white? Or "Dream White"?

I believe dream white. If I did it again, I would gel-coat the deck... Then get snap-in carpet. Durabak is great, and if I used it on another project, I'd put one textured coat on first, followed by two non-textered top-coats...

Well....first things first - Gonna get the carpet out of the bottom of the boat tomorrow.

Question - If I were to reglass the floor - would it make it more solid? Personally, I don't think that the current glass/plywood thickness really does much for support - while it isn't gonna break - it does bounce when you walk (I am a fairly big guy - 6-3, 230lbs...)

Well - got the bottom carpet out - man, that was NOT as easy as I thought. Here are a few pic's after I finally got it out:

And finally - The goal was achieved....carpet out in one piece. Now I can use it for a template when my new carpet arrives.

Next - gonna sand down the fooring and remove the existing carpet residue, etc.

I am fairly happy with this floor. I have read so many horror storys about Bayliner floors - I feared that once I removed the carpet I would be ripping up flooring....

The floor around that rediculous ski locker is gonna get refinished. I think I pulled the carpet out just in time....the wood is still good, but the fiberglass exterior has taken a beating. Gonna sand and refinish around the ski locker area, and I should be good to put down new carpet.

Anyone have any good places to get decent marine carpet at a low price?

Glassing the deck will add strength for sure.....

Just to make it eazier on yourself pull out the engine doghouse and seats and bases and any other items bolted to the deck. You will be suprised on how much carpet is on the deck.

Re: Minor flooring project on 96 Bayliner Capri

Here is the update - This weekend I used a grinder and then sanded (80grit) the deck specifically where the fiberglass looked thin or worn from use. After further inspection I made a decision to add fiberglass matt in those areas. I cut and layed fiberglass matt in those areas (including around the ski locker)

In the areas of the deck that the fiberglass looked good I decided to just give it another coat of resin in hopes to keep a good seal on the entire deck. (You can't see it from the pictures....but I went ahead and "rolled" the carpet up around the seat bases and edges so I could make sure I got good cover.)

Man - this was my first experience with fiberglass and let me tell you - it was NOT enjoyable - I started to get the hang of it towards the end, but I have a new found respect for the fiberglass pro's out there!!!!!

LOL, yeah I'm not fan of glassin' either. That's why I stick with the tin hulls. :D
