Re: Moving large quantity of outboards

Why you have all of these motors isn't the point. You have them because you want to have them. Enough said.

As for moving, I would go with the container idea. They are quite strong and I have seen them used to construct everything from work barges to buildings. You should be able to weld racks into them, or build racks that can be put in them with a fork truck.

Good luck with the move.

Re: Moving large quantity of outboards

Use a 2"x6" or 2"x8" if there standing on edge they will be plenty strong.... Just by chance, do you know where I can get parts for an old clinton 7.5 hp K751? Maybe you have one laying around... I just bought this one cause its Mint for its age. Not a scratch on the thing.. I need the Stater and points and coil or whatever is under the flywheel or hub or what ever its called... Where do you sell your stuff? Give me your web address if you have any online store.. Thanks.

Sorry, no Clinton anything. For the most part, when I get motors I don't want I've got a guy that buys up the odd brand motors in lots. I don't have time or space to keep something I would never likely use.
About 80% of the lot is Johnson/Evinrude with a few Gale motors here and there, the rest is split between Mercury and Honda motors. The largest motor after this weekend is 140hp. I sold the last 6cylinder and two V8s I had Friday to a used motor dealer for both cash and a few smaller motors ready to run.

One thing I'm realizing is that there are far more motors than I had first thought. Each store room down back is roughly 40x40', all the motors are standing up on their skegs in those rooms stacked in rows grouped roughly by size. Each sits on a 2x8 plank to keep the skeg off the concrete floor. There were four rooms this size filled to the point of not being able to walk in beyond the first few feet. The rest of the back building is stacked the same way, 75' from the back wall. The lack of lighting back there has made picking and sorting a bit of a hassle, for now I built a cart with two 2x12x8 rails on each side that I can stack various motors on to transport them to the front door and out to the containers. So far I've loaded three containers, I have a line on four more smaller containers that I'll most likely buy as well. The trailers will be used to haul the rest of the shop when the time comes. I definitely like the idea of using containers like this, even if it ties up all of my containers, its making every motor accessible when I need it. The way they are stored right now, I'm sure there's some that have been stored away for over 30 years lost in the mix or forgotten. As I'm loading them into each container, I'm logging them into a computer so I know where each one is. That's taking longer than moving them.

I wish my fork truck could be of use hear but there's just not enough room to move around. Its also a small hard tire model that can't leave the building. The containers are sitting outside on a stone parking lot. I'd get about 3' and it would be stuck outside. It also has fallen through the floor down back a few times so I don't risk it beyond the main part of the building anymore.

I do have a large four wheel pneumatic tire gantry crane that can move the carts to the containers which will go in the middle rows. That thing can traverse the loose stone drive just fine.

I would politely/respectfully disagree. I honestly think why rf has all of these motors is entirely the crux of the issue. The challenge of moving/managing/maintaining/storing/logging them is only a consequence of the main problem.

Check it out...

Considering the effort you are putting into moving these I simply can not accept that you are unable to take a picture. You are going to buy 4 more containers but you do not have a camera???

You are logging the data into a computer but again you are not taking pictures of your inventory?

I'm sorry if this comes off as a personal attack, it is not my intent. I just feel like with no evidence to support this thread there is no way I can accept that something this outrageous could be real.

Post a pic already!!

After 45 years, I'm sure you will be finding some "buried treasure". Sounds like you have it under control and the time spent now will allow you to enjoy your new home in FL with all your toys after the move. Since the containers will be the permanent storage place for your motors, consider putting a roof over them either individually or with something like a pole-barn. The atmosphere down there eats stuff up rapidly. Good luck!

What got me thinking fake was the mention of 80s vintage 50 hp evinrudes in large quantities. Aren't there a lot more 55 hp models around? Perhaps someone could enlighten us on the relative quantities.

What a fabulous thread! It's better than a suspense film. Can this possibly be true? No pictures, but unbelievable detail, with all kinds of ingenious solutions.
Reading, it seems possible, but after going away for a few days, I have to vote no. This is a fantasy. I would love to be proven wrong with some photos.

All of you people who are criticizing Reefishin will be laughing out the other side of your mouth after the Apocalypse comes and he is the only man left in the world with a supply of outboards to see him through until civilization can be restarted. You will all be lined up outside his door begging to trade your ex-wife for a 1962 whatever:)

Wow, I thought the 5 outboards I have collected in my quest for upgrades was alot. :)

If it were me I would build a crate for each engine.... but 1200+... that would be alot of crates...

The apocalypse diversion reminds me of the bumper stickers and its reply:

#1 WARNING: IN CASE OF RAPTURE THIS CAR WILL BE UNMANNED!!!!!

#2 In case of rapture, can I have your car?
