So this past Sunday morning a neighbor whom I've never spoken other than a casual 'hi" stopped by my house. He dropped of his portion of the new neighborhood entry monument project we are managing. He lives about 5 houses down on the other side of the neighborhood. He and his extended family own a local Chinese restaurant in town and all live in the house. As he gave me the money, he clearly had something else to say to me. He verified that I owned a boat and I said yes. I assumed he was going to explain he would like some boat buying advice. Instead he told me a story about a very successful (his words), Chinese entrepreneur uncle of his is arriving from China and he (neighbor) would like to borrow my boat for the day to impress his visitor. He then told me he had never driven a boat nor had his visitor but wanted to take it out onto the local lake which is about 3 blocks away. Mind you it was 41 degrees as he stood at my door. I was suprised by his forward request to borrow anything from me much less my prized possession and on game day (Vikings) no less. I don't think there is anyone I'd ever let borrow my boat. Instead of just telling him no and maybe saying something about liability all I could think to tell him was that the boat was already winterized and decommissioned for the year. It wasn't then but it is process now. Has anyone ever asked to borrow your boat?

Yeah and I asked if they wanted to raise my kids and sleep with my wife too.

Re: Neighbor asked to borrow my Chaparral

Many years ago, a friend and I swapped boats for a couple of hours and mine was wrecked rather badly. We were both well-seasoned boaters and the fault was someone else's and, of course, they had no insurance and no offer to make good and were sued. We lost because there were no injuries. Insurance companies took an entirely different approach to boating claims back then. All of that has changed now as this was back in the early 60's when boat insurance was never a thought.

It would not have surprised me one bit if your neighbor had asked you make sure the tank was full and soda in the ice chest. That style is how many foreigners operate and they bring it here expecting what they have been used to for so long.

Theres one thing about lending a boat to a good longtime friend with experience at the helm.

You did the right thing. DON'T EVER loan out your boat thats just stupid.
If this guy had borrowed it, first what are your chances of getting it back in good condition? Slim second what if he had hurt or killed someone... it's on YOU! if it's 41 deg out there. I'm sure the water is cold as ice.. hypothermia is just min.s away. so even if someone went overboard, their chances are pretty slim. and thats a lawsuit waiting to happen.

I'd have looked him in the eye and said "Are you kidding? NO." then smile and say "I'd LOVE to take you guys out and show you the ropes though..." Maybe this is your chance to make friends with him. you never know he may be that boating buddy you have been looking for.

Next time you see him, i'd go ask him if he'd like to go out on the water as soon as it warms up.

Yes, I have been asked to use my boat. Always have said,"No." And I would be honest and tell who ever why.

I do not let my son use the boat with out me being there, why a stranger.

Re: Neighbor asked to borrow my Chaparral

I was OFFERED my friend's boat, a 22 ft. Hurricane deck boat w/ 150 Yamaha 4 stroke for a week at the beach when it came close to time for our vacation and I had not been able to find what I was looking for. We even took it out for a check ride. He said he was O.K. with it as I had more experience than he did. I lucked up and found the boat you see here a week before vacation. I would have taken his boat but I value our friendship more so I was glad when I found this Palm Beach 21'

My daughter and niece hit me up to let them take the 'toon out w/ their boyfriends. I told my daughter yes with one uncompromising condition: your Mother has to go with you. That ended it quickly.

I used that once! It wasn't related to boating though. An engineer thought he could help himself to my toolbox. We'll just say I wasn't pleasent.

I work with a Chinese engineer. The culture is more different than you would think. If it's on thier mind, they say it and everything that has to with them is of the upmost importance. It doesn't supresie me at all that he just out and asked to borrow your boat.

The only person I would let use my boat is my brother. We've been boating the same amount of time and I've borrowed his boat before. Wouldn't even hesitate but he is the ONLY one I would trust.

Your snowmobile comment hits home. The only time I lent anything out was my snowmobile and the borrower (a family member who's cabin we were at) broke it in literally 10 seconds doing exactly what I told him not to do. I have to have that fixed after the boat comes back from its 100 hour service.

Re: Neighbor asked to borrow my Chaparral

Only owned the boat for a few weeks...

I have, however, been asked by people i hardly know to borrow my motorcycle. There are very few people i will allow to even ride my bike in my presence, let alone take it for the weekend. They are hardened racers and this guy that asked me had "ridden a dirt bike when he was 11" and was completely convinced that he could take off on my bike and be fine.

Not only no, but hell no. Thats exactly what i told him.

1 person i would trust to lend my boat to, thats my FIL and he has been at the helm of boats since he was 15. Also one of the few people i would let borrow my bike...however that would never happen because he would never ask.

You got a better chance of borrowing my boat than my Harley!

I guess I am known as the prick to my buddies, no one ever asks to borrow anything of mine. My brother in law asked to ride my bike in a poker run and my wife told him he could. Lucky for me I arrived home the day before he came to get it to head it off at the pass.

**Wife could not get in touch with me to ask and she thought I might not mind. I have sense shared with her my depth view of her brother and loaning anything out that is mine.

Re: Neighbor asked to borrow my Chaparral

I'm like most, and wouldn't lend hardly anything I value to someone I barely
know.

On the other hand, anybody in my family is welcome to anything I own any
time they want it. Now, I'm not naive enough to assume that everything will
always have a perfect ending, but I don't own one single thing that I value
more than the people I care about. I know that sounds kinda 'sappy', but
I've had plenty of toys over the years, just like a lot of you have, and I know
this one thing.....none of those toys will be there to comfort me or care for
my wife or kids if something happened to me (at least on their own anyway).

Then again, I'm one of those people that doesn't lock his door at night or
when he leaves the house either. Matter of fact, I'm not sure where my
house key is.

Yeah, you can borrow the boat...if you leave a $50,000 deposit and get your own insurance.

I like the idea one poster had of offering to take them out. As said, you might make a friend, might get free grub from the restaurant, plus the entrepreneur guy might give you something valuable (gifting is also very much a Chinese tradition).

Remember in "Clear and Present Danger" when Harrison Ford wated to rent a helicopter:
- sorry we don't rent it anymore, but it is for sale
-how much?
-2 million dollars.
-me and my pilot would like to take it for a test flight
-of course, you just have to leave a deposit
-how much?
-2 million dollars....

You should have told him you had family coming into town and asked to borrow his restaurant for a night so you could impress them.
