if that is a puncture that goes all the way through then yeah it could sink the boat quickly.... I am absolutely amazed that the retards didn't find the leak for you at the ramp.....

I too have been reading this thread each day with baited breath. IF a dispute were to arise between you and the marina/mechanics, I have found that it always is helpful to have the AG's info and phone number handy. Maybe even call the AG's office and enquire about a consumer protection division...that way you can always throw out to the Marina that you have talked to the Attorney Generals office. Just a leverage thought http://www.oag.state.va.us/CONSUMER/index.html

If it's the chip in the gel coat, then that's fairly easy to fix, right? I posted in the restoration forum that same picture and they said it wouldn't hurt anything for a little while, but fix it sooner rather than later.

Seemed like a pretty simple fix.

Think that much water could get in from that small chip? It is to the glass.

Looks like more than a chip in the gelcoat - look at all the cracking in the surrounding area. Looks like an impact point. No telling what damage that did to the glass behind it without looking at the back side of that spot. Can you reach that spot on the inside to feel if the glass is still flat?

I'm not sure, but I don't think so. I sent the marina an e-mail to check the chip out. I'm going to wait for them to pinpoint the problem with the steering and the leak.

They can at least do that for me.

Whatever it was must have hit pretty hard. Looks like 4 separate impacts by something about 3/8" diameter, all of them hard enough to flex the gelcoat/glass and create those secondary larger radius cracks above.

Easy fix to simply bodge it with some gelcoat filler

Not so easy to do the job right

Guess we know which one they will do :(

looks like it hit a bolt. Check over your trailer to see if there is anything sticking up. But could have happened if it were lifted on/off the trailer.

It was there before I bought the boat. The trailer is new. I believe the boat was stored on a covered lift on a private dock.

Not sure if this is covered earlier or not, but are you sure the marina is not going to charge you for "storage", "testing" and "diagnosing" the boat?

No, I'm not 100%. When the head mechanic told me that any repairs would be on me, that led me to believe that they'll check it out for me, being that they just sold me the boat a few days earlier.

I'm at the point where I just want the thing back.

I'm going to call them and see if they found anything.

Re: New to me bowrider, have some questions...

OK, just got off the phone with the owner. He said he got my e-mail this morning. I told him that I didn't think there were any fittings below the water line and to check out the chip. He said he is thinking the same thing. He finds it hard to believe that much water is coming in from that chip, but you never know. This afternoon he is going to pull it off the trailer and have a really good look at the entire hull. They are also going to see how much damage is behind that chip.

I asked him if this is costing me anything. He said absolutely not. He actually hasn't even given the owner of the boat her money yet. He's hanging onto it in case they find major damage. He apologized to me for all of this and doesn't really know how they missed it. If there is anything major, we'll reverse the sale and he'll tell the lady what's going on. He said he's not going to leave me with a boat that has major damage and say oh well.

I guess I found a honest marina owner, huh?

I really hope it's nothing serious. It's such a pretty boat!

He's hoping to have more answers this afternoon.

Well sorry to put bad thoughts in your head, but at least it sounds as though they are headed in the right direction here.

Keep us updated.

I hope you're right about the marina owner being an honest joe.

On the other hand....
He actually hasn't even given the owner of the boat her money yet.

Perhaps he sold a boat with a known defect AND was holding out on the previous owner, to make a little money on the interest or float his payroll for the month

I hope I'm wrong and he's really one of the good guys. Either way it sounds as though they'll take care of you in the end.

Re: New to me bowrider, have some questions...

Well guys, I think this thread is getting ready to come to a close. I just got off the phone with the marina. They found 4 very small chips in the gel coat. One of them has a void behind it. It's not a crack or a hole, just a void. He said it's very easy to fix. They are going to open it up a little bit more, let it dry for a day or two, then do some glass work, and gel coat over top of it. He is confident that I'm not going to have any problems, and if I do, they'll repair it for free. The owner already agreed to pay for the repairs.

So, not out of the woods yet, but I think we're getting close. The only thing I'm worried about is this being a proper repair. I expressed my concern and he said they do a lot of these, and this is a proper repair. He said if it were a crack, that'd be a different story.

What do you guys think?

Steve
