I guess this is what I meant to say " a loose or cracked exhaust bellows will not but water in the bilge"!
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=390457&page=1

The statement you quoted said exhaust elbow.. Not bellow.. Who knows what he meant.. I was thinking he meant exhaust Y pipe.. Or the tube from the Riser to the Y pipe.. Guess he will have to reply to ever know..

You are correct.. It won't put water in the bilge

Where does the exhaust exit if there is no exhaust bellow? I guess where the exhaust bellow attaches to a the transom, huh?

If a Y pipe or something was cracked, you would probably see water dripping inside the bilge with the engine running, right? There's zero water coming from the engine that myself and the mechanic found while we ran it. And the shift boots look good. No visible rips.

I'm sure it's something expensive. I just hope the transom isn't rotted. If it's not, I'll be learning how to do some major repair work to the boat.

Here's a question. Let's say the gimbal ring seal is leaking. I know that will get the wood wet and eventually cause rot. But if there is no rot, it'll dry out, right? Then I can fix the problem and I won't have to worry about rot?

Re: New to me bowrider, have some questions...

I have been reading this thread with great interest since it started. I purchased a private sale of a larson 1998 206 sei. Upon getting out from the lake test drive noticed quite a bit of water after pulling the drain plug. 5 or 10 gallons.

Coming from jet skiis in the last 14 years...water isnt surprising but the amount was.

The seller tried to say it was the exhaust thru hull leaking ...which I've now inspected and tightened the screws somewhat.

Ok. He then says at a later date that the brass plug has a stripped screw andthats causing the leak.

Well I did repair that but have not lake tested that. Im almost positive that I have a torn bellow. Im doing a detailed inspection of the transom and bellows today while im measuring for our new swim ski deck. I might try the interior hull water trick just to confirm this. Wont solve the straight thru hull exhaust question...but those are dang tight.

My question, pardon I don't mean to hijack the thread, but this is in topic, what steps in what order can we trouble shoot smartly for in bound water in boat?

Water in hull test on trailor.

Run muffs and inspect interior engine forced leaks

Put in lake and inspect w engine off to watch in bound water opportunities?

Temporarily silicone around transom mount to see if rot is present?

Sorry if this has been answered somewhere ...kindly point me there!

Watching the youtube videos of repair assures me this wouldn't be the end of the world if it was a torn or cracked bellow. Im pretty sure I can save the $800 to $1200 quotes from the local mechanics. I might not be able to buy the parts as cheap but my labor is free!

Hope everything works out ok with your puchase!

You bought a Bayliner...

Fear is the appropriate and natural response in your case. :D

If the transom has leaked and got water in to the plywood core then it's never going to dry out - rot is inevitable at that point.

It will start with the ply delaminating and getting weaker and then the rot will start ending up with the transom showing more and more stress cracks as it flexes. I guess ultimately it could give way but I can't say that I have ever seen or heard of that actually happening. They usually get caught or scrapped before that happens but I guess it could.

Nothing wrong with a Bayliner if it's been well maintained - at the end of the day they are built pretty much like 90% of other fiberglass boats the same size - the pre 85 boats are probably the best ever made

At least you didn't get your feelings hurt at a good natured jab. Gotta' have someone to pick at ya' know. Just like in the automotive world, we pick on Hyundai or Kia. Truth be known, thay are actually well engineered autos, but that was not always the case. That may or may not be the case with modern Bayliners, but I know when I started boat shopping years ago, if it said Bayliner anywhere in the description, I poo-poo'd it immediately. I always liked the Mariahs, and actually put an offer in on a 23'er a few months ago...but after reading this thread, it appears they get rotten transomitis. Heck, if you look around this site long enough, you would think that all boats are junk...Cobalt, Sea Ray, Four Winns, Regal, you name it. They all seem to rot out from under you pretty quickly...just not as quickly as Bayliner. ;)

I was referring to a cracked exhaust riser... possibly let to freeze in the winter and cracked? it was just a thought. my point was that it could be anything... just because you see it running down the transom doesn't mean it is coming from the transom.

Re: New to me bowrider, have some questions...

several times in this thread people keep talking about a leak from the "gimbal ring" he tightened... folks he tightened the pinch bolts in the gimbal ring to take slop out of the steering.... this has no connection to ANYTHING that could cause a leak.... I believe people are thinking he tightened the bolts that go through the transom..... those would not affect the steering in any way.... my bet.... bellows...

Remember when i said the mechanic jumped on the drive and the transom was rock solid. Also, there are no cracks in the gel coat anywhere, even the transom.

Wouldn't there be some sign of rot other than water getting in?

I'm glad some people are thinking it's maybe not that bad.

not necessarily, you could have a small spot rotted out near the bottom allowing a leak BUT so far you have no indication that it is....

Re: New to me bowrider, have some questions...

My boat showed no signs of stress cracks on the outside of the transom at all. However if you look at my thread, you'll see how right of the transom really was. There is a chance and you just had a bad transom seal, and that is what started the whole thing. I think we should wait until the Marina tells you what's wrong before we jump to any more conclusions. We are freaking this guy out!
