Re: Ok, how do I do this?

Did you get her off the trailer....Wizzard?

Not yet. work has hit me so I gotta take it when I can. BUT I am about ready to pull it off.

I have NO problems with any suggestions given here. That's why I asked. I also understand sometimes things loose something in translation. so I always take things with a grain of sand. Like i said it's a small hole a patch is going to be good ffor now.

Yes the engine is out. I thought about flipping it. BUT I don't have anything good to rig it from. just my engine hoist... BUT it might be possible.

If I do think about flipping it. windsheild ? Take it off? everything else seems self explanatory.. like the gas tank (easy to pull)

The good thing about flipping it.. I could paint the underside nice and purdy.. I looked into gelcoat today. two paint shops did not carry it (am I looking in the wrong place) I went to our boat dealer. their parts guy was WEIRD.. he wanted to know what it was for, what color etc etc etc etc before he said. "I don't keep any in stock, and its about $80 a quart plus hardener..." he could order it.. but that just seemed WAY off line for price.

I have never played with Gelcoat. is this out there? Can anyone point me to a place online to order some.. CHEAP LOL

80 bucks was probably His cost lol..

Unless he can get his gel from the factory that sells it by the pound..

I just got 3 qts of different gel from spectrum ( I get alot from them ) 60 bucks..60 bucks..last one was 89 bucks because it was discontinued plus another 40 for shipping ...

I called my local sea ray dealer for some gel ( simple white ) 120 my cost...

Re: Ok, how do I do this?

OK, I decided to leave it upright, and halfway on the trailer.

I Jacked it up (about 3")
put it on blocks (with come old cushions I had)
let some tension OFF the winch. (chained the transom to my car behind it)
Then I connected a come along to the trailer up front..

A few click of the come along and the boat stayed put, but the trailer moved.
I rolled it about a foot forward.

Then I started all over, Now with the BLocks BEHIND the trailer instead of inside the trailer.

I got the boat about 3 feet off the trailer. I still have the winch holding the front. along with a couple tie downs holding the hull on the trailer.

The BACK is still sitting on the block and the cushions. also tied down to the car behind it. IT's WIDE open for my repair, and sturdier than it was just sitting on the trailer..

I got out the die grinder with a sanding pad on it and opened up about 6" all the way around with a nice taper... Now to go get the ITCHY SCRATHIES off of me.... Thank god for the respirator..

Tomorrow I'll make an inside patch and start the repair.. :D

Re: Ok, how do I do this?

My old Seaswirl had almost the same exact hull rub-through. I was able to get up inside the hull with a file, sand paper, dremel to roughen up the glass, then stuck a V shaped patch up inside the hole. It popped out (open) when inside and stuck to the hull,,, from what I could see  Then added several layers of glass on the keel to build it back up again. I built up a good 3/4" on the keel to give it something to rub-through again. Sanded it level and shot it with a coat of paint, PO painted it, so my paint didn't look out of place. I wasn't after a pretty repair, just something to to seal it up and make it look 1/2 way decent,,, fishing boat.

I did this repair on the trailer, plenty of access on my boat/trailer setup. I jacked the tongue of the trailer as high as I could get it (3') and placed jack stands under the trailer.

Oh yeah, the stringers and transom were shot, hauled it to the dump...

DAn that is my plan. I figured I'd ope the hole up so its about 1" then soak some glass mat in resin. BUT put a piece of string through it, then shove it through the Hole. then use the string to pull it down into the v.. let it cure cut the string then start from the outside.

I'm like you I don't need perfect (the boat really is not worth that. but I do want it watertight.) I though about gelcoat but I think I am going to stay away from that I can get enough paint to do the entire boat for the price of the gelcoat.. (well not really but close enough)

Re: Ok, how do I do this?

I did something similar. I tied a piece of heavy fishing line to a small piece of plastic (coffee can lid) and put that in the hole, then a piece of wetted glass on the fishing line and into hole. Pulled the plastic down and it smooshed the glass into the hull. The piece of plastic helped hold the V'ed piece of glass to the hull.

Worked fine until I got rid of the boat a year-2 later.

Re: Ok, how do I do this?

Let me resurrect this thread. I finally got my repair done I am really happy with my results.

I was able to use the "fishing line" method talked about to patch from the inside. then I ground the outside down pst the gelcoast about 6 to 8 inches all directions past the repair . I used some JB weld to fill in some of the damaged area. don't know why but I thought it would be best.

then I used so HEAVY glass matt (random cut stuff not the "weaved" stuff) filed that to shape then went over that with some smooth weaved glass. I used some release paper (silicone coated paper) over that then sandbagged it and jacked the boat up by the sand bag to put pressure on it while it cured.
it aint perfect, but it is Strong and water tight. I am totally happy with the results. I dont think I am going to worry about re gelcoating it. Unless someone can give me a good reason to do it. If you say LOOKS thats not a good enough reason. its UNDER the boat I hope no one EVER sees that side.. LOL

I am going to do a little bondo and sanding work then paint it. and I am ready to go..

NOW heres my question. I believe the damage was done from bottoming the boat out WAY to many times. the center of the "keel" (I think thats the term) was Ground down pretty thin in several spots...

Is there something I can put over it to help that out? I was thinking about a nylon or teflon strip about 2" wide and a couple feet long. that way if I do bottom it or beach it it will be sliding on that and not my repair..

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
