Let it dry, and before you put on another coat, try wet sanding with 220 grit to git rid of the orange peel and POST SOME PICS so we can all BRAG on ya!!!!

Yeah, that IS the way the MFG's suggest doing it, but the guys here on iBoats have found that the Roll n' Roll yields superior results with FAR less bush marks or overlap tracings. DREWPSTER and others experience tell the tale.

I am actually researchign wet sanding now. I am not sure whether to wet sand now or after the second coat. I planned on three coats but if it looks good after two coats I more than likely will just leave it be. Thanks for all the help. I will upload the pics I have now.

You can and should wet sand between each coat.

heres the pics I ahve on my cell phone.

First is when I first picked it up. It looks far better in the pictures than it did in person. The paint was trashed and house paint.

Second image is my first sanding pass vs original.

Third image is first coat of primer vs. sanded part. Ran out of daylight here:

I am unsure whether this is the frist or secodn coat or primer. I believe it is the second

This is the first coat of paint. Excuse my tenants old shed in the background.

220? everything I read online says 1500 for wet sanding. So basically you have a bucket full of water and sand it until its almost always gone. Be careful around the edges because you can burn the the paint easily. That seems about it right?

Found thi on the moparts board:

i prepped the car with 80, then 100, then 200, finished with a 400, did all my body work, and painted. after 2 coats (about 4hrs work for the whole car) i wetsanded with a 600, then did 2 more coats, wetsand with 800, 2 more coats and sand with a 1000-1500 and polish, followed by wax, done......

My plan is to wetsand with 600 tonight then do a second coat.

Wetstand with 1000 tommorrow and with do another coat or leave it alone depending on how it looks.

They're talking about CAR Paint. It goes on in VERY THIN coats. Your paint is a LOT thicker. You can do a LIGHT wet sanding with 220 or even use a Scotch Brite Pad. Just go easy and knock down any nubs or imperfections and give the next coat something to BITE in to. It will help get rid of some of that orange peel BUBBLING that you had. Keep using a DAMP roller for you second GO OVER. To keep it damp Wrap it in a plastic bag when you're not using it. It will stay moist that way.

I think that Wetdry 220 is a little on the aggressive side ( wet dry is more aggressive then other Types of paper ).

But then again.. I dont know much about Rusto paint .

I personally do not wet sand for my paint jobs..its all dry sanding. ( I guess wet would help keep the dust down though ).

I found a great link for painting your car/boat with a single stage enamle. The use interlux bright sides but the ideals are the same.

The scotch bright pad I got is a ultra fine pad. if I find it too aggresive I will use my 600 grit sand paper I have. Yacht what do you actually do for a living. Are you a professional boat painter or just an all around boat mechanic. I read some other threads of yours and you seem to really know the fiberglass/body aspects of boats pretty well.

Your link is not only Highly confusing..but in context that Im reading it .. its wrong..

I dont think that the ultra fine pad would be Too aggressive ..but I do think 1k or 1500 between coats is not aggressive enough ( your not doing a show car ).

I actually do boat repair/restos/refinishing for a living. Yes.. I am a High end pro. .. working with high end products.

I think I already said that! This IS Rustoleum Paint and I HAVE painted a LOT with it. The Ultra fine pad will NOT do you much good. But it's your boat so do as you see fit. I have given you my advise.

So I worked on the boat last night. I had my brother helped me so painting the boat was much easier. Surprisingly it seems that 90 percent of the orange peel worked it self out in the drying of the paint. I did find one run so I sanded that with 320. The rest of the paint I used my scotch bright pad that was designed to was designed to sand minor imperfections between coats(it was named between coats). The paint looked good enough that I decided not to wet sand between coats. The scotch bright helped with any imperfections I had.

I then rolled on the second coat with the help of my brother. It came out very nice with minimal orange peel. I will wet sand after the paint cures for a week or so. It looks very nice especially compared to how rough it was when I got it. I then was able to sand the entire outboard and strip the motor hood down. I then did the body work to the hood and painted the entire unit with Rustoleum gloss white in spray paint. It came out nice. The hood needs another coat but it was 1 am and I decided to stop for the night. I decided to use spray paint because I fish a lot of shallow water area and liked the ideal of being able to touch up the lower end without any major work.

I am going to have new stickers made up for the outboard. I have to get new Grady White stickers too so I am going to go with different stickers than what came on the motor/boat. I will have matching stickers made for the boat/motor by the local sign shop. They do top notch work and all the street signs so the stickers should last a very long time. Hopefully I can run the new gaslines tonight and get the motor mounted tommorow night. Then I can start on the interior once I can gaurantee that the motor is running fine.

used rustoleum marine paint on the inside of my boat 10 years ago and only had to redo the deck this past winter mainly because i was bored my boat is a whaler type hull side console and i only use it in salt water . but i do wash it down every time i use it and it is garage kept. and for your info i'm in florida so the boat gets a lot of use and the paint holds up very well.
