Re: Pictures of your battery systems inc. switches/ACRs?

I had seen the diagrams, but sometimes that stuff doesn't make a lot of sense until you actually apply it, or SEE it which is why I asked for pictures.. Which I still have ZERO in this thread!! :( lol! I bet all you guys have a big rats nests back at the batteries don't you(not you Silvertip!)! Haha!

No rats nest here. Switch and ACR are 8 feet apart in separate enclosures. All you would see is two battery cables and a switch in one picture and two battery cables and an ACR in the other picture which does not tell or show you a thing.

You would be better served by a crash course in understanding schematics

Would it help if I put arrows on my diagram so you can follow the path from the engine to the batteries? I won't do it on Don S. diagram because there are too many "what if's" in that switch/ACR scenario and it would only serve to confuse more than you already appear to be. I mean no disrespect but I would also agree that if you have trouble following an electrical diagram then you probably shouldn't be wiring this setup.

Schematics = Color coded connect the dots with electrical devices, grounds and switches. No big deal. The fact there are different ways to do things, wires get routed differently, wires get cut, wires get added means working with a used boat isn't always black and white, red, yellow-red, or grey. We all know this I'm sure. And my boat wasn't wired like that diagram, so while it applies to my rig, recognizing the nuances isn't going be there right away for me and I'd rather ask stupid questions than hook something up wrong. This is my first boat with more than a trolling motor and 1 12v battery. I'm thinking out loud in this thread here. I'm pretty confident I know enough where I'm not going to smoke anything, but this is definitely a learning experience.

How are the ends of your battery cables done? Copper lugs? Heat shrink tubing? Do you use dielectric grease on on your battery connections? Do you use any sort of anti-corrosion spray?

I'm fortunate enough to be friends with the owner of a local electrical assembly house. They make a bunch of different cable assemblies for the military and railroad industry.

We used 4 gauge, "marine" battery cable and hydraulically crimped tin plated copper terminals to the cable. We then covered the connections a special 2 layer, wateproof heat shrink tubing.

I use stainless nyloc nuts to make the connections to the batteries. I have found no need to use any type of an anti-corrosion spray on my connections. A touch of Evinrude “blue grease” seems to keep things under control.

We are now at 66 posts. Are we any closer to a solution than we were 66 posts ago?? Seems this thread has just turned into a "chat session".

Here is under the cowl:

I'm holding the jumper from the batt terminal on starter solenoid. It was very crudely spliced into the red wire which runs from the rectifier to the batt connection on ignition switch. The diagram states the jumpers purpose is to allow the ignition switch to be turned to OFF at any RPM without damage to the rectifier. Why does that red line run into the harness up to the ignition switch?

for power to the ignition, choke, and start circuits...... without it, turning the key would do nothing.

Hmm, ok but this is also the line thats doing the battery charging? Also, what is the purpose of the rectifier? Would you mind explaining briefly? Why do they have that line to the ignition coming from the rectifier and not the battery itself?

The stator generates AC power. The rectifer converts AC to DC power

Why is the ignition powered from the rectifier instead of the battery? How does the tach work into this equation?

Since nobody posted a pic of their set-up here's my ACR set-up...

Looks really good. Those are ANL fuses? Why did you go with that type? How do you do your cable ends?

that IS "from the battery".... same as if it was run straight to the batt post.

I used the ANL because I got a good deal on them, and their very HD... I used a 12 ton hydraulic crimper to make everything. I have a smaller crimper as well...

A few more pics for the halibut!

Whats your preference for the Inline non-HD fuses? Looks like the auto-style glass type? on 12awg wire?

Those are a couple top notch installations!
