I have a 1986 Starfire 150 with a 86 XP 150 Evinrude on it. My problem is that the boat takes a long time to plane out when the fuel tank and the livewells are full. It has a 3 blade 24 Turbo prop on the motor.I'm thinking of trying a 4 Blade but I'm not sure which prop is the best. Help.

Re: Poor Hole Shot

Raise motor a hole or two and see if that helps. Try some weight up front. Might put a doelfin to help out with planning. Smaller pitch prop may help. What are your WOT RPM's?? 4 blade will help with holeshot, but you should have no problem getting on plane with a 150 Motor on your boat. Trim tabs are also an option..

Re: Poor Hole Shot

rickdb1boat
The motor is mounted on a jackplate. I've never changed the prop or had this one sent in to be reworked. The RPM's at WOT are between 5500 and 5800 the boat runs 60MPH plus. The motor has never been touched other than routine service. I'm wondering if it's getting tired and maybe needs an overhaul. The compression numbers are below 100 on all cylinders but are within 10% of each other.

Todd ,Is this a new symptom running with the same load or is this rig new to you.Just trying to get some history to go by.

OB
I've owned this boat since 1992. this is not a new symptom, To me it seems to have gotten worse in the last year or so. But this time I had my partner sit on the front deck to get the boat to plane out more quickly without him doing that it would plow thru the water with bow up an plane out eventually but it took alot longer.

Re: Poor Hole Shot

Have you tried trimming the motor down to get started then trimming it back up for maximum speed once you've reached a plane?

When was the last time you did a good decarb? Sounds like it might be time.

Re: Poor Hole Shot

are you turning those WOT rpm's when the boat is loaded heavy (full fuel and livewells)? Seems to me like you might be on the verge of being over-propped... then with more weight, or maybe in need of a tune-up, it ends up being a dog outa the hole.

So to me, it sounds like you just don't have enough hp at low rpm's to swing that 24p, at least the way your engine is running right now. So no, I don't think going 4 blade would help... maybe would be worse (unless you drop in pitch) because 4 blades would give you even more bite.

I wonder if the more this happens, the more likely you are to foul the plugs, and then it keeps getting worse (?).

so, my thoughts are 1) tuneup and 2) think about dropping some pitch (unless WOT rpm's would be excessive).

For comparision, I spin a 19" pitch 3 blade aluminum prop on my 150 V6 merc... tops out in low 50's mph (just under 6000 rpm), but the 17' ski boat leaps on plane. Ya, I could go faster, but I wouldn't like to drive a dog. Even though yours is faster, I'd be out of sight before you get on plane!

HTH,

Brent

Re: Poor Hole Shot

Assuming your engine jackplate is set at its optimal height coming on plane without experiencing excessive prop ventilation ,I would have to tend to agree with Rick ,that you are likely a good candidate for a easy planing fin or trim tabs.A decarb wouldn' be a bad idea in any case .However since you have experiencd this symptom from the get-go ,it wasn't set-up correctly in the first place.

What is the max rated hp of your boat?

It seems that your compression is low,but it could be your gague.Have you tried the gague on another motor for reference.I had a gague once that read 30 psi low,,,,I believe it is resting in a shallow grave now.

Re: Poor Hole Shot

I am running a 1994 Tidecraft with a 1988 150 XP and am turning a 26P tempest the hole shot is fine and the top end is great dont know what it is running but it is so wild you dont want to look away to see. I doubt the prop is your problem you might want to try a quarter inch on the jackplate in either direction. I know alot of guys that could care less about the hole shot when they set a bass boat up just want it to run on the top end and that may be what the guy before you did.

Put a set of Smart Tabs on your boat and you will think you are driving a Cadilac at WOT.
