River boat???

Got this boat free.
The hull and transom, good shape.
The trailer is fair.
The 50hp should run.(good comp)(good lower)

Can't decide if it's a project or a 4-sale??
I need something for the river and those days when I can't get out in the ocean??

Gotta finish taking the insides out and see what it needs?
(already have ideas)

Uhhh.... Jerry...... Free boats are really expensive.... Especially if they are neglected late 80' bayliners left out in the elements

I'd be surprised if the transom was in good shape based on the pix.

Perhaps not completely rotted to mulch, but good?

But it looks like it has a cup holder for a good beginning. Or one more big hole to patch.

If it's a cheap fix, fine. Otherwise sell the trailer and motor to finance your new river boat.

Turning a 16ft. 50hp. Bayliner into a fishing boat.

It's been sitting in a field for YEARS!!
Fixed the coupler and put on a new tire and brought it home.
The insides are BAD!!

There is a lot of bad wood but the hull and 99% of the fiberglass is good.
The motor started right up and pumped water!!
More to come!

Well the only person that needs to think it is a good idea is the owner. Everybody else has their own ideas, but it all boils down to the owner. If he or she thinks it is a good candidate for making any type boat out of it, then it is good. You can make it into any type boat you wish. BUT, with out lots of pictures, it never happened. :thumb:

Sorry to say but that one looks worse than the one I got for free except mine has a cracked out transom. I'd strip it for parts and find another maybe better one.

I guess any boat is repairable but with how much time and money. I'm no glass man so I can't give you any idea about what it would take to make her proud again.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I guess there are more people afraid of a challenge than I thought.

I guess you didn't read my posts???

The transom is GOOD!! The hull GOOD!!
The motor GOOD!!!
The motor has less than 100hrs.

I know how to glass, and have all the tools and know how to do the job.
Been working on boats since 1985 and know when a job is too much.

ALL naysayers please don't follow this post!!
And I DIDN'T ask for ANY advice on if I should or shouldn't ??

Thanks GM

Opinions and their great ideas are to junk it!!
Don't need and didn't ask for that crap.
1 positive reply from the "experts"

Makes you wonder If?? I said it was a Mako would it have gotten a different response??
US Marine uses the same materials and equipment on their boats that SeaRay uses.

jerryjerryo5, I have to say I am a "I can do it" type person.

When I was still working I was the lead Engineering Technician over a team of Engineers that's primary job was to look at old antiquated circuits in the older (and even some newer) aircraft and determine if they could be redesigned to accomplish the same job better, quicker and more efficient and take up less space and weight. One at a time would go around the room and state their opinions. And so many times everybody would look at the project in the group meeting with the customer and state "NO, we can't do it", until I was asked for my opinion. And I always stated that "YES we can do it" and it really wasn't that difficult either. Then after the shock faces subsided, I would explain how.. And after that everybody was on board. Some folks have a defeatist attitude and some have a "we can do it" mindset. Guess is more effective and profitable? JMHO

JJ , no reason ya can't turn what looks like a fish and ski into a good fishing boat ...The hull design may limit you on how shallow you can go but with a nice V bottom the bigger water will be less teeth rattling . No good pic of your hull shape yet but I would guess it should fit the bill for what you want ...
Will it be costly ? Heck what boat ain't ! New or old ! But thats preaching to the choir .. I know you've been around boats a LONG time ...
I have a 15.5 ft Legend sitting in the yard that is probably pretty close to what you have hull wise .... Interested in what you come up with ... Might give me some idea's other than making a planter out of mine ... Well truthfully it is already a planter ...
Good luck ! :pop2:

US marine was the parent company, but not the entire time, and Bayliner and Sea Ray didn't use the same products or materials to build boats.

About 99% of the time the fiberglass itself is good, and about 99% of the time the wood in a boat that old is compromised, it doesn't matter what brand. I'd be surprised if the transom and stringers are in good shape.

After saying that, it really doesn't matter much because any boat of that era would have the same issues and need about the same amount of work, it just depends on if this is the correct platform for you to start with, and that's up to you. The hull shape is about the only thing you won't be changing, so if it works for you that's all that required.

No Title

Put in the wrong size.
It's a 14ft.
Guess nobody really reads anymore.
Transom's GOOD
That's one of the first things I checked.

The 88 14ft. came configured with a few seats and a bow section up front.
The other way was as a fishing boat with a platform up front and a platform in the rear.

These pics are a few of original and upgraded boats.

#3 shows about what I'm going to do.

Oh yea did I mention (5th time) the transom is good??
