Re: prop shaft question

That number is for Mercruiser Alpha One Gen II from 1998 to the present, and a lot of Merc outboards, namely the late model 3 and 4 cylinder engines. Sierra don't do a match, but the GLM number is 11155....

No...

Can you tell us why you're asking the question? More information might lead to better answers...

Re: prop shaft question

well....because the 44-850308 is 510.00 dollors list.....sooooo....the glm 11155 supercedes the 11150 and compatable with the mc1,r, mr, and alpha one, and alphaII to date making me think they are the same shaft...........but i would rather have an oem part over the glm....but dont want to pay for a part number to have mercruiser do the same in years to come and say oh....850308 supercedes and is compatable with all bla..bla...bla. you know what i mean. plus then i could find a cheaper oem part.

i havent pulled the genII apart yet to really see the difference and maybe when i do i will see an obvious difference, but strange aftermarket can offer one shaft dating for the past 30 years.....

and also a whole unit for a little more than a cost of an oem shaft......and we wonder why china is kicking our A**.....people want to buy oem but it just doesnt make sense too.

Re: prop shaft question

Forward compatibility does not always confer backward compatibility. The new shaft fitting into old boxes doesn't necessarily mean that the old shaft will fit in the new boxes.

My history with Merc parts from when I was a dealer is that if they have a part from a previous model or even engine and it is the same as the part in the new model, they will use the same part number. I do know that Ford have in the past use different part numbers for the same part in order to charge more for the same part, if it fits a 'luxury' vehicle for example...

I have done a search by part number (please don't ask how, I could tell you, but then I would have to kill you :D) and that shaft is used in the Alpha One, Gen II, and a heap of different outboards, but it is NOT listed as used in the earlier Alphas. I would postulate that if it did fit the earlier Alphas, Merc would have listed it as such. The earlier Alpha propshafts do supersede, but not to that number. I would be very cautious fitting an earlier shaft into a Gen II housing.

When I had my prop shaft changed... I just got a good used one for $75. It was an oem part too.

Hi Mark,

Not sure what numbers you are after. I checked your original number (44-850308) and nothing supersedes to it, and it doesn't supersede to anything else. That means no other part in Mercury's range is compatible. I have no idea what GLM did to 11150 to supersede to 11155, so I can't tell you which shafts MIGHT fit.
