Re: Savage Avalon

Make sure the area in question is DRY before you install the transom. Personally I would patch it with a couple of layers of 1.5oz mat and resin and then Peanut Butter it. Use the thickened resin to secure the nuts for your clamps.

Hi DCR.

A heat gun, or even a hair dryer for drying out those damp spots.
They must be dry and clean.
Then proceed as WOODONGLASS suggests.

Re: Savage Avalon

I put a few layers over that area i was worried about above, and I got my transom clamps made up , and now have the transom glued in.

I used vinylester resin mixed with west system 403 microfibres. I mixed 2 litres of resin/catalyst first and then started adding 403. (used 1ml of catalyst to 100ml of resin) I needed almost the whole 4 litre bag of 403 to get the resin thick enough so it wouldnt sag/run. Probably would have been spot on if i put the whole 4ltr in. Had plenty of time to work with it, and get the clamps on. But i was still in a mad panic thinking it would go off too soon. I taped up the holes in the skin, and they filled nicely. I used a sheet of ply on the outside skin to make sure the skin stayed flat after clamping, which worked well. Also drilled some holes in transom to let the resin ooz out.

I just have to fillet the transom and then start tabbing it in.

I have 1.5oz csm and 16oz biax to tabb transom in. Ive got a bit of an idea what has to happen, but wouldnt mind some help with how much overlap is needed with each layup, and how many layers.

I am ready to start making a new stringer aswell. I bought a sheet of 1200x600x18mm (pretty much 3/4) marine ply, hoping to make it out of 3 pieces. What the easiest joint for a novice to make?

Re: Savage Avalon

Thanks for the comments, and thanks for the help! Its been a struggle getting this far, but im having fun, sort of, and looking forward to the finished product.
Still have a fair way to go though.

Not sure if you got my last questions about tabbing the transom and making the stringer, as i edited the post.
I have read some posts about this, but there are alot of different opinions about how many layers and how far to tab along the hull.
So what do i need? Im using 1.5ozcsm and 16oz biax. I know i have to start off with the csm and then the 16oz but not sure how far to tab. And how many layers of 16oz is enough without going overboard?

I bought a sheet of 18mm(3/4) marine plywood to make the stringer, but i will have to join about 4 pieces together end to end to get the length.
Is this ok to do it this way. Even if i buy the biggest sheet of ply, i cant make a stringer out of one piece.

Also have a sheet of 12mm for the floor. Unsure if i want to raise it or not as i will loose room under the splashwell for the fuel tank, battery etc.

Im trying to get stuck into it this week as i have the week off. The weather is against me though. Knew this would happen!

Here's some drayings that will help you going forward. Your tabs should extend 4 to 6 inches on the hull.. For your stingers you can make scarf joints or sister them in like the drawing shows. Or you could use simple overlap joints to.

Re: Savage Avalon

Thanks mate, good drawings those.
Have just filleted the transom and preping for tabbing now. So i will tab 6 inches.
I just looked up overlap joints. This one probably looks easiest for me to do, clamping wise. Can i glue together with resin and 403 microfibres, as i still have another bag of this (the same stuff i used to glue the transom) Or should i use wood glue? I dont have any epoxy.

Re: Savage Avalon

i got the transom tabbed. Have cut out the floor and made my stringer. Im not to confident in making joins in the plywood so i opted for a one piece hardwood stringer.

Anyway i need to fit my drains before i can put the stringer and floor in.

Im worried about drilling the fully sealed transom, and creating a weak spot for water to enter.

What is the correct way to do it? I cant seem to find much info on fitting these. can i just coat the exposed ply with resin, or should i be gluing a piece of pipe in there?

Hi All.

Sorry to have been off the air for a few months.

My "Cyber" system crashed and I lost everything.

I hate techknowlodgy for it's un reliable aspect.

My 120 year old hand planes work perfectly. Without up grades.

HOOKED.UP,
Not sure what you mean.
Sorry about not updating for some time.
The boat is still coming together, but at a slower pace.
No time at the moment.
But i have managed to glue the stringer in with a batch of 403 and vinylester, and got one layer of 1.5oz over it. So the keel should be pretty solid now.
Have cut the floor and glassed the underside and sides.
I have also drilled the drain and have sealed with a few coats of resin.
I will update with pics when i get the chance.

Re: Savage Avalon

A few pics to show you some progress.
Floor is in and ive almost got the second layer of glass finished, but i ran out.
Its been soaking up about 1 litre of resin roughly per square metre of 1.5oz.
Once i finish glassing the floor i will glue the splashwell to the transom and staple the cap back on, and then start working out how to make and place the seats.
I will also start making my own jack plate out of aluminium angle, as Woodonglass suggested.
The original twin cable steering i will be replacing with a single cable setup. Not sure what brand yet.
I was thinking about replacing the rear handles so i dont have to clean up the originals. Where is the best place to get chrome fittings, or someone that has a large range? I looked on here, but there didnt seem to be many different types. I dont really want black plastic handles.
