Re: So What's Everyone's Winter Projects???

I'm going to make you northerners sick. For the winter we fish, camp, hike some canyons and washes, climb some mountains and volcanos, all of which are accessible only from the lake, go fossil hunting, and now that the lake is down, explore some previously sunken structures. Some say that the winter is no time to be on Lake Mead, but that only applies if you do nothing but water sports. We find plenty to do year round, and at 65 I'm just getting started.

Not making me sick at all. I like winter as much as I like summer. Right now I am hoping for a lot of snowfall this winter for snowmobiling, skiing (x-c and downhill), cold weather camping, ice-fishing, building snow forts with the kids, snowball fights, sledding, ice skating, hockey, etc. Bring on the snow and cold. I'm ready.

edit: As for the boat, I got everything done on it i wanted to this summer, so change lower unit oil, sea-foam the gas, and fog the engine is all I got planned. Still got a little more fishing to do before that though.

Install new shift cables, and hopefully get around to rebuilding the helm. The existing layout just doesn't work for me. GPS is in the way and I can't see the strbd temp or oil. I want to arrange the gauges so that oil is next to oil, temp next to temp, etc. As it stands I have to look all over the place to make sure everything is good. That means my eyes are off the water for longer than I'd like. Also want to flush mount the GPS. Oh yeah, and install a new wheel, preferably with some wood on it. Guess I should get started.

Clean garage out so I can put the boat in it. Then I do not have to winterize!

Boat: Clean and organize, replace manual head with electric head flush, reconnect windshield supports, new travel cover and under water LED transom lights.

Tow vehicle: rebuild tranny or have someone do it.

It would be easier to list the things that aren't on my Winter list...

Only got the boat in August, and plan on going through from stem to stern...fixing anything that I find. Hopefully, not that much...just a lot of "gettin to know her" work.

And replacing the head the PO removed.

More boats and more junk than I could possibly get to...even if I had a decent place to work. I'm having concrete poured for a house I'm building myself... then I'll be too broke to do much. I would love to get all the junkers cleaned up, running, and in sellable condition.
1978 Bayliner 23 ft Cabin Cruiser, I think it is a Monterey, 350 chevy w/ mercruiser outdrive. Just needs lots of cleaning up and cleaning all electrical connections, tune engine, could use paint job and interior upholstery.. and a NEW HOME!

1976 Venture bass boat, 140 Mercruiser, pull engine, check it out after it got water logged from sitting outside and drain plug was blocked... rain filled up the boat while on trailer... brand new rebuild on engine... praying it is not toast!

1978 Harmon, 20ft, 350 chevy 260 mercruiser outdrive, clean up, do what I can with the old junk upholstery... maybe replace if I can get around to it. Sitting on a heck of heavy duty HitchHiker Road Boss trailer... would love to sell the whole thing for cheap so I would have one less major project. I'd get rid of it for $1500.. less than what I put in it. The trailer is worth more than that!

Two pontoon boats and 3 more old bass boats, one with a $650 jack plate, not to mention 5 jet skis that do not run. Yep... got plenty to work on...oh yeah, and about 10-15 old outboard motors... some over 50 years old... just to tinker with.

Draw up the plans for the add-on to the garage that I didn't get around to building this year so I can finally store my boat on my own property.

Finish the repairs to the mast on my little sailing dinghy.

Get real brutal with disposing of all the crap stored in the garage. Key success criteria will be the ability to spread arms, rotate in place, and not touch anything!!! Then maybe I can get my 52 Ferguson tractor in there for a motor teardown.

The Scout, bless her heart will be snoozing in a friend's hangar under the wing of his vintage float plane. Wonder what they will talk about for the next six months...

When I'm not blackfishing, I'm in the mancave building lures. Plugs, bucktails, spinnerbaits, and jigs.

Replace the stringers and floor in my 87 CVX 18 and install the interior. Should be a fun boat next season!

Re: So What's Everyone's Winter Projects???

Generally going to be doing some of what I needed to do this summer, but couldn't due to surgery on my wrist that screwed me up for 14 weeks.....

But will be rewiring the old boat (76' Starcraft Supersport, 16' deep V), upgrading all safety equipment, chains, straps, trailor wiring, checking bearrings, replacing one or both cables to kicker motor, going over kicker motor and replace impeller and possibly repaint. If money is not a problem will add a cd/radio for the captain (wife) and some other minor things. I want to look into adding a live well but fear this may be difficult on this boat. We are kicking around entering a few bass tournamnts next year but unsure what I need to do on a live well, so will start asking sometime soon.

I just gutted my 19' CC aluminum hull. Its a mess. Needs: all new wiring, new deck, stereo, nav lights, also going to rebuild carbs, replace water pump and install a tach. Wish me luck.

Re: So What's Everyone's Winter Projects???

I'm looking at new gauges. My 20 yr old Teleflex ones are crumbling and jumpy/questionabley accurate. Now if I can get the stupid things out without damaging the dash is the trick. Removing the strap from the rear does nothing, I think they've been glued in! Grrrrrr...

Re: So What's Everyone's Winter Projects???

We're heading into summer here - it gets hot and windy, and when it's windy the waves on the Bay are steep and short, so I'm going to "summerise" the boat. Firstly a water proof hatch over the cuddy's open storage pocket for keys etc and then a 12 volt fan for cooling the cockpit area so I can run with clears this year. I'm also looking into replacing the incandescent bulb anchor light with an LED one to reduce the drain on the house battery.

Built and covered new furniture last winter.(PT wood, Good quality marine grade fabric and screws cost me almost 1000 to do it myself ) This Year I am replacing 4 sheets of decking, New Carpet, Paint job. (Marine grade plywood is kind of hard to find at a decent price.Total cost for wood, paint job, carpet, glue, around 600)
