My NWJ 218 lightning has a flaw. when fighting a fish, you are leaning at a pretty good angle when leaning against the gunnel with your toes up against the side of the boat. several times last year, the fisherman fighting the fish had their feet slide out from under them. it is even worse trying to pull a crab pot into the boat. what can I put down over the vinyl flooring to help with traction? If I don't do something, someone is gonna end up overboard.

Tell the people not to lean against the gunnel. ?

Put down a 6" wide strip of the self adhesive tread strips, the real coarse ones, like sand paper.
Or get the 2" wide strips, and put 2 rows of them about an inch apart.

Or ad a padded rail to the top inside of the gunnel. Something that extends in, about 6". That should give them enough leverage and traction to keep their feet under them.

If your really worried that much about it, put some toe rails in. Or you can add some kiwi grip to the deck/non skid. Or you can lighten up the drag why fighting a fish as so it doesn't pull them in the drink. You wouldn't be the first one to lose someone overboard. happens all the time, especially with inexperieced fishermen fighting large game with a harness on.

As far as the crap pots go, you should have a winch and cable attached atleast in a rod holder, but better yet, built with a support/supports to the deck depending on how big they are and how much weight you are lifting.

Sounds like you need a boat designed for fishing!

The grip strips will work but your also adhering them to your floor. You could also go with some rubber traction mats.

Buy inflatable PFDs for everyone to wear, then laugh at the ones that fall overboard as they're bobbing up and down in the ocean... don't forget to yell SHARK!!! before you pull them in.

That works as an excellent low cost solution so long as they use their own fishing gear. :)

Someone's been watching too many "Deadly Catch" TV shows.

I'd be interested in seeing the design of the boat--sounds like the sides on the inside flare out at an angle? Is there a wide chine or something outside, or curve design like you see on a lake boat?
As well as padding, consider widening the gunwales. It's a project, but a useful result for a lot of applications.

Might try a product like Seadek instead of the hard vinyl on the floor. Has a much better grip when wet.

As much as I like the show it has nothing to do with what I am talking about. Will get you pictures later. Not all crab/lobster pots are brought on 100 foot boats, most are brought on by 20 to 30 foot boats. Also you don't have to travel to the berring sea to catch them, lol

Having a detachable winch setup is not an uncommon thing for the smaller vessels especially the ones that only do 30 or 40 pots for fun and personal use. We did quite a bit of it up north when I lived there off a 19 mako. .

here is a link to the boat I am talking about.http://www.northwestjetboats.com/models.php?model=Lightning

no need for a winch to pull the pots, it is done by hand as the pots are only set in water 45- 75 feet deep. I need some help on what will stick to the original vinyl flooring. may look into the rubber mat also

It was mentioned earlier. Toe rails. Easily installed, unobtrusive. Removeable.

A toe rail.will.not help.my issue. The issue I have is that you are leaning over the gunnel.when fighting a fish. Your feet slide out from under you and you almost fall overboard. I am looking for something to put over the.vinyl floor that will afford more traction. I will look at the rubber mats but am willing to hear more options

You shouldn't be leaning over the gunnel while fighting a fish. If you are, maybe you should look into some stand up gear like back harness with gimble belt. Braid brand is a popular one. What kind of fish are you catching?

I think the Kiwigrip could be installed over your existing floor. It is a non skid coating, easy to apply and it works very well, even when wet. The KiwiGrip can also be tinted to any color, so you could do what ever color you wanted.

And something as simple as the right pair of boat shoes goes along way.

Good luck and happy fishing.

I'd be intersted in what you are catching that is pulling peole out of the boat. We released a #150-#175 Bluefin off the back of my 22' boat using #30 Striper tackle 2 weeks ago. Had a couple more hooked up. Nobody fell in. Nobody got pull over the side.

Toe rails, non-skid decks and a good pair of boat shoes will go a long way toward resolving the problem

the fish we are pulling in are Halibut 50-100lbs, lingcod 15-60lbs chinook salmon 10-40lbs and sturgeon 100-800lbs. it's not that people are leaning over the rail, it is that when you lean your hip on the rail to brace yourself your body is leaning at a pretty good angle towards the water. I am gonna try some nonskid tape over my nonskid vinyl and see how that works.

I know you got to get some leverage on a big flattie or a dinosaur that wants to hide in a hole.

Does your boat have the high railings like some of the boats pictured in your link? I'm thinking that would help a lot.

Then again, it looks like there's something of a "platform" in the stern so that even the high railing is only about thigh high? Can you put an even taller railing on? I'd want something about waist high at least if I was fighting what you are.

Re: somebody is gonna fall overboard

I say if you put some high rails on top of those gunwales then your problem is solved.
