Hello new guy Dave here

I bought this boat a few months ago and have been working on it non-stop now.
I am turning this boat into a diver duck tender boat for hunting.

I have most of it done and I am coming up on some final things to do
And I have a few questions if you could please

1. The gas tank and sending unit wiring.
Do I need to ground this to the filler cap?
Just a single wire required going back to the gauge for hook-up or also a ground?

2. I am going to run two batteries
the back one will be hooked to the motor and bilge only
the forward one under the seat will be running the electronics
both will have a on board battery charger hooked to them
these will be 24 series batteries. In the center console there are buses for clean wiring and fuses in the switch panel.
I know the back battery will be grounded to the motor.
But do I need to ground the forward battery to the back battery?
And if so what size cables do you use.
Also having the battery charger does this work in grounding the forward battery to the back battery? Or do I not do anything at all? Hook em up and go?

Here are some pictures for you to see of the boat that I am redoing.
Feel free to comment and question, I am trying to do this right, and not take short cuts.

Re: Starcraft 180 Mariner Rehab Questions

I clean the inside out of all the foam and such
I gluvited all the rivets, stripped the bottom paint, water tested it, patched a hole we found, So far so good, with no leaks, but again she still needs to be run in the water for a test.
Stripped the out side of the boat as well of all paint, took it to a friend at a body shop to have it painted with Dupont paint.
We used an epoxy primer on the whole boat for helping to seal it. And two coats of ultra flat paint.

Didn?t like the trailer that came with the boat so I found an aluminum I-beam trailer to put her on for a lot better ride.

Drake,
Welcome to iBoats! I have an 89 210 CC that looks just like yours. Good job on cleaning it up so far!

I don't have an answer on those particular questions, but you'll have answers pretty quickly. The folks on here are really helpful.

Keep posting pics so we can track your progress!

Re: Starcraft 180 Mariner Rehab Questions

The filler cap should be grounded to the fuel tank, and the ground from the tank to the gauge, or to a MAIN grounding point

about 2 batts, you dont need to connect the grounds of the batteries, you can, and you can also run a main wire to a 2 batt switch so you can use either to start if you get into trouble, BLUESEA makes a great kit about $150 that will autosense and charge either battery as needed from the engine and a switch you can choose to ADD/combine the second battery to help start when needed.

To know the correct AWG you should check out online calculations for the length needed. maybe a min of a 2/0 wire .. see this chart

battery size isn't the issue, length and amps are.. to start an outboard 40-100amps is needed depending on the starter, quality of connections, engine size, compression etc.. I've had instances where cheap battery jumper cables dont work cuz they can't pass the AMPS needed..

nice boat !!! there's one for sale near me for $4000

thank you for the info.
i have a ground from the filler cap and to the tank and a main line coming into the console for the gauge.
i will then need a add'l ground to the console? or busbar

i didnt think i needed to ground to the main battery from the electronics battery.
i chose the two battery system because i though it to be the simplier cleaner way with the wiring i was doing and i didnt think i needed a kit like bluesea makes for what i plan on doing. i always saw those kits in the much bigger boats.

i was planning on making a jumper set of cable incase i did have a problem with the cranking battery, i am going about 4' from battery to battery
thank you for your help

i would love to repower but have chose for now to stay with the 88hp
she seems to run good but still needs to be put the test of what i plan on doing like running the bay in the cold.

i would love to put on a newer 90hp but i have been layed off and wont be abe to do this until another time.

here the flooring drying after applying poly resin to seal it all and then i also painted it with a epoxy paint over top of that for the color i wanted.

i tried the tinting agent that you get but it does not work well.

You're doing a great job on that boat. Very nice. The 88SPL is a fantastic motor and I sure wouldn't be considering repowering unless it died. I hit 39MPH in my 18' Starcraft with an '81 Evinrude 90 with 3 adults. I was pretty pleased with that.

EZ My 22 holiday with a 200 Johnson will go about 45, but seems hesitant after that . Duz that seem fast enough ? I have never looked under the floor for retained water as there is never any to drain out. The floor seems rock solid. It is very quick with take off . I have a lot of gear in it plus a Merc 4 stroke 9.9 on the back. Any thoughts??? 1975 22 Holiday closed Bow

I would THINK you'd be able to hit 50 but for a 22' with gear and a kicker 45 is still pretty good. Maybe you've got a power prop on it.

thank you sir

if it goes that fast i will be happy, just hoping she holds up, it seems to be a popular motor and easy to find parts for, which is good.

Very nice work there. Once you're done with the boat you obviously need to upgrade that shabby trailer. Let me suggest a trade as I am sure you could easily make mine better than new while ridding yourself of the pig you have there. ;)

Seriously though, I would love to have a trailer similar to yours. I'm not sure mine, a painted tube trailer, is worth spending any time on (beyond new bearings)

thank you

(shabby trailer) was the one that came with the boat :)
i sold that trailer because the boat was very unstable on it, to much rocking back and forth and sitting to high.
so i started searching craigslist and found the EZ Loader I-beam alum. trailer with brakes and great tires for 350.00 on craigslist. i thought that was a great deal and bought it, asap
