WOW, you won't believe this!

I just went out to a boat yard with a marine service shop, because I saw online that they had some OMC props that they were "giving away" for 40$ each. As I am battling a prop issue, this was appealling even tho it was an hour ride each way.

I just got two 14 x 12 x 3 part number 382017, new in the box props for $80.

They are ridding their shop of alot of old stringer OMC stock. Eighther they don't really know the value (eBay and such) or they are helluva nice people.

I stayed and BS'd with the owner and a mechanic for an hour or so. The owner came back out with new in packaging ball gear assembly with bearings and shaft and a set of shims, AND JUST HANDED THEM TO ME.

He took my name, number and address and told me he would crate up and mail whatever stuff he has for the electric shift as he goes through his wharehouse. He will even send his OMC factory manuals and what OMC tools he still has.

I almost fudged my shorts!!!

I want to send a couple of bottles of something out there for them, is that appropriate? I have no idea, nor do I care about being PC.

Of course I will send him funds to cover any shipping costs, but I won't be holding my breathe on parts showing up eigther.

I was thinking more along the lines of a couple bottles of , say... Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Select. But not everyone has a taste for bourbon.

i would say you'd be better off sending him a gift card to a nice restuarant or store in your area

as nice as the booze is, not everybody drinks, and IMO is an antiquated practice

i don't like the idea some people have about paying their mechanic buddies with beer for work, unless they suggest it

it's not like their boss gives them liquor for a paycheck, money is awesome!

Re: Stringer Guys- You won't believe this!!!

I just ran the numbers off of this shaft, ball gear & bearing set on Crowley Marine's catalog, and it came up as driveshaft, bearing gear assembly and as obsolete BRP part listed for 500$.

That is the shaft from my flywheel, the double timkin bearings and ball gear for my rig.

I am giddy. I am drooling about what may still come.

I HAVE TO FIND THE PERFECT THANK YOU!!!! It would be a crime not to. Any other ideas?

As much as I love my sour mash, I think dubs may be on the right track ( and bond-o too :D )

To each his own, but if I got a bottle of Patron with my paycheck, I'd be a happy man!:D I wouldn't suggest sending him a bottle though, unless you're sure he drinks. I would definitely offer to take him to a steakhouse of his choice, or something along those lines.

I don't know.. beer for the help and or owner has always been received with a smile in my experience. If you want to avoid the alcky route, send them a Subway luncheon package or just bring them 4-5 various subs pre-cut to munchees and a few bottles of various soda. Nobody ever complains about free lunch!

Ohhh I'm goin' again.... an' I did drive my beloved pick up, but he didn't fill it, yet.

A son and daughter took over the place after dad retired. ( this was part of the fruit from hangin' out and chatting with them. ) They are geared for catering to their marina clientel. It looked to me that they had a bunch of slips, but I didn't wander and count. They have run out of need to support OMC stringers, and are ditching their current inventory of parts.

This is the part that would make you cry. The man told me that he had a , now make sure that you are sitting, d-u-m-p-s-t-e-r loaded and hauled out already. That was when I "fainted". When I came too, he assured me he would send what he had left. (I didn't really faint, it's just flavor).

But the dumpster was real, and I want to find the landfill it went to.

Just sent wife for lottery tickets.

What a waste of resources...............dumpster of parts. An ad on Craigslist even to give it away.........

Just think of all the machining etc that went into all the parts. Maybe someone at the dump will rescue the stuff.

I second that. If you want to send the owner to a nice dinner, great, but a gift card to a local pizza joint would probably make the mechanic pretty happy at lunch time. Plus, he may be the one going through the warehouse and remember the pizza when he finds something.

Chances are it won't happen..... it's probably buried pretty deep in the landfill by now..........since it was back in AUG of 09!:p
