bear with me, I think were missing a communication. You said the steering turns when the cable is detatched. Do you mean when the steering cable CASING is detatched?

Re: stuck steering 40hp johnson

ok starting from the port side , theres that lil nut atching the lingage to the motor, then after that theres a large nut then theres the motor,,,ont the other side, at the end of the "tunnel" theres another nut like the large nut on port side, an then theres the cable hose that has that attachement that screws onto the starboard side, do i need to remove ALL of this or jsut the cable hose an then the linkage to hammer away?

THe large nuts are for the tilt tube and are not to be removed. Before that though, I want to make sure you have a stuck steering rod in the tube and not a stuck cable in the cable housing.

Re: stuck steering 40hp johnson

The nut (Polished or Chrome looking) attached to the Cable has to come loose. The cable will jam , due to the length, when you try to remove it. Turn the steering wheel to try and shorten the "Casing" or rod coming through the tilt tube and then try and remove it.

Re: stuck steering 40hp johnson

which nut are you talking about? One of the 2 large ones found both port and stbd? If so, then no harm done, but get the nut back on. I think the 2 big nuts thread to the outside of the tilt tube and fix the tilt tube in place as the hinge for the engine.

refresh and check my just previous post as I edited my post. THe only nut you have to remove from stbd is the faucet like steering cable CASING attachment nut.

Re: stuck steering 40hp johnson

I'd try and get some play working, push and pull from the port side, working in a penetrant. If you get it going, just tap it, a mm at a time or less for as long as it takes to avoid buggering the end. Once it is going well, you may not be able to get the rod all the way out the stbd side, because the cable may interfere with the splash well of the boat. You may have to unboly the motor and move it port to be able to get the rod all the way out.

Re: stuck steering 40hp johnson

the boat is a lil simple john boat, u can draw a straight line from the opening hwere the rod goes in to the starboard side of the boat an out with no obstruction
