ok guys i went hom eyesterday an confirmed that the steering cable IS stuck to the steering cable housing. i guess this means that i can hack saw it? i also jacked up the starboard side an tried some penetrating fluid, a couople of seconds after praying it it began to come out prety steadly out the port end,,,im now thinking that rod is broken and or bent. the cable moves freely on the starboard side but the little nub sticking out on the port side wont budge, but it will turn. after leting it sit there for a couple of hours i tried taping it an it didnt move. im gona hack saw it. the only thing im thinking is that maybe the cable housing seems to be stuck because the hose is kinda tight, so before i do cut it im going to remove it from the helm an see if it really is stuck. thanks for your help guys an if u have any more thoughts on my situation let me know.
Agree with all your conclusions. I think I would, prior to buying a new tilt tube but knowing one was available, hacksaw off the port side rod (to get a flat surface), center punch it ,and drill it out. You can get long bits in larger sizes. If you get lucky you can get rid of the rod, and knock the rest of the cable through.
Glad you like the idea. Id drill large enough for a coathanger first, to get an idea of the drill length necessary, as you can put the coathanger through and feel the moveable cable. Still think though that the cable is just loose in the rod as suggested by rickdb, because when you rotate the port side rod end, you have a spring like load up.
THATS A GOOD POINT, IG THAT IS BROKEN IN TWO IT WOULDNT BE SPRINGY LIKE THAT, I JUST FOUNT OUT THROUGH MY BRO IN LAW THAT MY FATHER IN LAW TOOK IT APART 5 YRS AGO, SO HE SHOULD KNOW HOW IT WORKS, ILL TALK TO HIM TONIHGT
ok guys i just confirmed with a cabelas tech an a diagram he showed me that the cable may be indeed 2 parts<br />it look just like a tv antenna form the diagram, he told me that it sounded like i needed to replace that cable though. he also told me that i could replace the tilt hosing , but that it was dificult, aside from removing the morot form the boat there was alot of things i needed to take apart he said. but i dont want to buy a new steering cable an get it all torn up from a cruddy tilt housing
its a small diagram of the steering system thats use to describe the steering system that ur buying, the pic is kinda small , but u can see that it is a rod within a rod, just go to www.cabelas.com and do a search for steering an u should find it i belive its teraflex or something like that, ull see wat im talking about
I HAVENT SEEN WHAT MINE LOOKS LIKE AT THE HELM, BUT THE MOTOR END OF THE DEAL LOOK LIKE ALL OF THEM, MORE LIKE THE FIRST TWO, IF U SEE THE PIC U CAN MAKE OUT HOW ITS LIKE A TV ANTENNA.
Were all on the same page here. This is the system weve been talking about all along. It looks like an antenna, but is not, as it is a cable that runs through a tube and firmly attaches to a rod that goes into the tilt tube. In these photos you can see the rod, the smaller diameter cable attachment to the rod, the faucet like nut on the cable tube that attaches to the threaded tilt tube.
If the cable is broke, there would be no reason you could not pull out the Cable Housing, Nut and what's left of the cable from the tube. Then all you would have left in the tilt tube is the steering shaft(Rod).
i talked to my father in law last night an he prety much told me what u guys have been telling me. that the cable is stuck an i need to get it out someway or the other, he did recomend the heat, i might just have to go buy a flame thrower or something..alright guys ill let you know how its coming along. thanks again for all ur help
