Re: Stupid mistakes while fishing
Went out fishing on the James 4 years ago it was the middle of winter, air temp was around 36 degrees, water temp was 38 degrees. When I launched there was zero vehicles in the parking lot. Put in and caught bait with the gill net, headed to my first fishing spot and as I was putting the first anchor out in 21-22 ft. of water I noticed there was a cross wind that I figured would push my boat sideways and so I was going to have to set my second anchor out towards the rear of the boat. Got the front anchor tied off and used the OB to position my boat just a little towards the shore so I could run back and throw the anchor out before the wind blew the boat sideways. So here's what happened: Grabbed the anchor and about 6 ft. of rope, slung my arm back to throw the anchor underhanded, when I released the anchor a split second later I felt the anchor rope wrap around my arm tight. I knew the second it happened where I was going...no question about it!!! It seemed like 2 minutes before I hit the water but in that short moment the only thought I had was "YOU have GOT to get that rope off your arm the second you hit the water!!!" So I did a belly flop and as I hit the water I pulled as hard as I could at the same time. The rope tore from my arm over my hand taking some nice skin with it too!! Next thing that popped into my mind was "YOU'VE GOT to get back to the boat and climb inside ASAP before your coveralls fill with water!!" I flipped around and swam back to the boat and started climbing in, got my first leg in the boat and then it happened......second leg was double the weight and I couldn't lift it over the rail! I finally reached for the pedestal seat post on the rear deck with both hands and pulled the other leg into the boat!! By now the water had reached my skin and my weight had almost doubled with all the clothes I was wearing that were now soaked. Grabbed the cell and called the wife at home, "bring a set of clothes to the ramp I fell into the water!!" She wanted to call 911 but I said no, I'm fine just get the clothes to the ramp asap, I'm heading back there now! As soon as I hung up I pulled the front anchor rope, pulled the rear one and starting taking off my clothes, fired the boat up and headed to the ramp. The whole time I hadn't seen a single boat out on the water. By the time I got to the ramp I was down to my underwear, I tied off the boat and ran to my jeep and fired it up. It's a good thing that Jeep has a great heating system in it, within 5 minutes nice toasty air was warming me up. Here I am sitting in my Jeep in my underwear...I could only imagine what an officer would say if he walked up to the driver's door. My wife showed up about 15 minutes later (we lived at the time about 30 minutes away) with not only a set of clothes but a complete set of fishing clothes (long underwear, wool socks, boots, coveralls, 2 shirts, etc..) plus towels to dry off. I get dressed tell my wife thanks for getting here so quick and that I'll see her tonight.......and off I go back out on the river to fish again!!!
But.....the next morning it did finally hit me, that was too close!! Took me a few days to get over it before I went back out fishing again. I don't throw the anchor any more....and I always tell my wife where I'm fishing at and if I change my plans while out on the river I call her and let her know my new location.
