I (the mrs.) was down on the missouri river when I was younger fishing with my parents. I thought I had a fish bite my bait (I tend to overreact while fishing.......) so I jerked really... Really hard back. Up out of the water comes soaring my hook which was way closer to the bank than I thought and the big ole river hook landed right in my moms neck. THANK GOD it only grazed her and caught the very edge. She started screaming that I had killed her and she was going to die. I think it traumatized me more than her D: She had one little drop of blood and it was very very simple to get the hook out.

Now you would think I would have learned not to go ape crazy on my pole when I get a bite but I still do it. The hubby is afraid of me when I fish :(

Fishing with my wife, baited her hook for her cos she doen't like to and said your ready to go. Was getting another rod ready to go when a line with the bait came over my shoulder and across my chest, recognising what it was I picked it off and threw it to one side yelling NOoooo... but too late, she was casting. Hook went into my thumb and I was caught. Not good enough for wife, when the first cast didn't go she did it again, god THAT HURT.... check behind you before you cast, just in case i'm there.

We still fish together, we are just a little more careful these days.. LOL

too many to list but my fav story:
as young kids Dad would take us fishing . He spent most of his time dealing with our tangles & stuff. Once I got my lure hung up in a tree above the water. Dad trolls up under the tree poking around trying to get it loose and my brother says" look out for that big snake!"
Dad turns to look and staring at him is about a 5 foot long Water Moccosin no more than 2 feet away--Dad bieng the cool cat ,ducks-backs up and clips the line.

When I was 13 or so I was fishing a pond in my neighborhood (as I did just about every day) many times I had set the hook and the fish would come flying out of the water onto the bank (smaller fish on a 12" plastic worm) we one day I was using an old Rebel jointed minnow (hooks everywhere) saw a fish go after the bait--felt the bite--set the hook--no fish-that bait came flying out of the water and one of the hooks caught me right in the eyelid:( . It made it all the way up to the top of the barb but luckily the barb didn't go through. It scared the heck outta me. Took about 3 or 4 minutes to pull the hook out. After I "changed my shorts" I was back at it.
Just another day of fishing:)

I was out fishing solo. Had a new rod all ready in the water . A live bait on a knocker bobber.decent combo rod about 200$ . Decide to also use a top water to look for some snook. Sent the new rod down for a second. To pick up the other . And slam, there goes the new rod, right out of the boat. I cuss a while, throw stuff around a bit. And realize there is nothing to do but fish on. About 45 minutes later,I see the bobber kinda drift by. Make my way over to retrieve ,at least the bobber. I grab the bobber, and the Jack is still on.lucky he is tuckered out and dosn't fight to hard. So as I pull it into the boat, trying to get all my used line out of the water I realize the rod is still there!
Just another day fishing

My wife too is dangerous when she gets a hit. Many years ago we brought her mother and father with us fishing on our boat. I cautioned her dad not to stand behind her but he didn't take heed. She gets a nibble and BAM she conked her dad on his head. Funniest thing I ever saw.

Was out fishing with the Mrs. It was a warm summer day. the walleye were going after top water lures. Should have known then that the day would be a little messed up. Got a bite from a small Walleye. It was acting more like a bass than a Walleye. It gave a good shake and out came the hook. It landed in my cheek. Luckily it only went to the tip of the barb. A small aluminum boat, so of course it had no mirror to see what I was doing. Wife was too freaked to be of real help. Managed to pull it out by myself, still don't know how. Hurt like HE$$ for a couple of days.

My uncle is big into overkill when it comes to tackle. Once we were camping about 15 miles back into the boonies in Ontario looking for some big northerns. He hooked a little guy, about 20 inches and manhandled it with his tree trunk of a rod. When he jerked the fish out of the water it did a crazy flop and got one treble hook stuck through the thick part of skin between his thumb and finger. With a couple flops the fish managed to drive the hook in past the barb and got itsself hooked in the 3rd set of treble hooks. Needless to say it's interesting unhooking a fish thats hooked to somebody's thumb. The only thing we had to cut the barb off once we pushed the hook the rest of the way through was a dull rusted out side cutters, so that took more than a couple attempst too.

Re: Stupid mistakes while fishing

I used to spend a lot of time on the White River camping and fishing. I had gotten to know a divorced gentleman and his ten year old son and decided to invite them along one weekend. We had a great time, but somehow his son (Christopher) managed to bury a Rooster Tail hook past the barb into his thumb while I was getting the boat ready. His dad brought him to me and asked "what do we do?" I told him we had two choices; cut it and push it on through or pop it back out the way it went in. Christopher chose the latter, so I told him to close his eyes and I grabbed it with my multitool pliers and popped it right out by quickly turning my hand to the left. The little guy fainted when it came out:eek: and I felt terrible for him, but he was up and at 'em two minutes later with nothing but a tiny hole in his hand. We washed it, doused it with peroxide, and put a band-aid on it and laughed about it the rest of the weekend. I was really proud of him. I'm sure he's told the tale numerous times.

We went down to Smith Moutain Lake in VA about 3 years ago for vacation, rented a house on the water, had a great time. The house had a nice dock so that is where we spent our evenings fishing. SWMBO loves to fish. I had baited her hook (yes, I have to bait her hook LOL) and she casted out into the little cove we were in. She sat her pole down to get a drink or something and then it happened. She got a big bite, pole hit the water. MIL and her boyfriend Bill were with us. Bill went in the water after the pole (we could still see it in the shallows) About the time he face planted in the mud, the pole took off, and I mean TOOK OFF. Looked like an arrow going through the water. Bill was ok, other than some hurt pride and a few small scrapes. Bill did end up with the nick name "Bobber Bill". Partially because of this incident, that and because everytime he goes near the water he ends up at least neck deep in it.

Cast your bait out there, then lay your rod and reel down on the beach, ground, dock, side of boat, then that big Catfish gonna' jerk your rod and reel right into the lake/river/ocean....seen it happen lots of times!....Rod holders!;)

Re: Stupid mistakes while fishing

Went out fishing on the James 4 years ago it was the middle of winter, air temp was around 36 degrees, water temp was 38 degrees. When I launched there was zero vehicles in the parking lot. Put in and caught bait with the gill net, headed to my first fishing spot and as I was putting the first anchor out in 21-22 ft. of water I noticed there was a cross wind that I figured would push my boat sideways and so I was going to have to set my second anchor out towards the rear of the boat. Got the front anchor tied off and used the OB to position my boat just a little towards the shore so I could run back and throw the anchor out before the wind blew the boat sideways. So here's what happened: Grabbed the anchor and about 6 ft. of rope, slung my arm back to throw the anchor underhanded, when I released the anchor a split second later I felt the anchor rope wrap around my arm tight. I knew the second it happened where I was going...no question about it!!! It seemed like 2 minutes before I hit the water but in that short moment the only thought I had was "YOU have GOT to get that rope off your arm the second you hit the water!!!" So I did a belly flop and as I hit the water I pulled as hard as I could at the same time. The rope tore from my arm over my hand taking some nice skin with it too!! Next thing that popped into my mind was "YOU'VE GOT to get back to the boat and climb inside ASAP before your coveralls fill with water!!" I flipped around and swam back to the boat and started climbing in, got my first leg in the boat and then it happened......second leg was double the weight and I couldn't lift it over the rail! I finally reached for the pedestal seat post on the rear deck with both hands and pulled the other leg into the boat!! By now the water had reached my skin and my weight had almost doubled with all the clothes I was wearing that were now soaked. Grabbed the cell and called the wife at home, "bring a set of clothes to the ramp I fell into the water!!" She wanted to call 911 but I said no, I'm fine just get the clothes to the ramp asap, I'm heading back there now! As soon as I hung up I pulled the front anchor rope, pulled the rear one and starting taking off my clothes, fired the boat up and headed to the ramp. The whole time I hadn't seen a single boat out on the water. By the time I got to the ramp I was down to my underwear, I tied off the boat and ran to my jeep and fired it up. It's a good thing that Jeep has a great heating system in it, within 5 minutes nice toasty air was warming me up. Here I am sitting in my Jeep in my underwear...I could only imagine what an officer would say if he walked up to the driver's door. My wife showed up about 15 minutes later (we lived at the time about 30 minutes away) with not only a set of clothes but a complete set of fishing clothes (long underwear, wool socks, boots, coveralls, 2 shirts, etc..) plus towels to dry off. I get dressed tell my wife thanks for getting here so quick and that I'll see her tonight.......and off I go back out on the river to fish again!!!

But.....the next morning it did finally hit me, that was too close!! Took me a few days to get over it before I went back out fishing again. I don't throw the anchor any more....and I always tell my wife where I'm fishing at and if I change my plans while out on the river I call her and let her know my new location.

Re: Stupid mistakes while fishing

Good stories.

As a young teenager my friend and I were baiting a trot line with bacon. We were catching and selling turtles to the local bar. My friend's dog decides he want's a piece of bacon. Since we had no clue how to remove that hook from her mouth, we went to an old-timer. He showed us how to cut the barb and remove the hook.

We went on catching just about every turtle in the creek that meandered through the golf course. Then we caught and sold smallmouth bass. I don't think there is a turtle or bass there today.

Learned two things about that day. How to remove a hook....and release just about every fish I catch.

This baby went back for another day!

release just about every fish I catch.
They don't have a thumbs up smiley face or I'd plaster about 10 right here!! Catch and release does work (not saying people can't keep a few) there's a balance we need to meet for all game that we hunt or fish for. Thanks for doing your part!

Re: Stupid mistakes while fishing

OK last year fishing in Sandy Hook Bay NJ for fluke my friend got his line wrapped around the outdrive....he tried to get it unwound but just coldn't reach it. Since I'm a little taller I tried......ok so picture this.....here I am hanging over the transom my buddy holding my feet and I have the line and can see the swivel stuck on the prop.....The bay was full of people fishing watching this..... A boat comes ripping past us on plane and the wakes start...... The back of the boat starts to bounce and my face is getting closer and closer to the water  Then bigger wakes come and I start getting dunked big time! Must have gone under 5 or 6 times but I held on and got that line free..... needless to say everyone around us got a great show and a good laugh!

Re: Stupid mistakes while fishing

ok.. biggest one to date. Several years ago, I was fishing with my mom and pop in Savannah. We were up this little tidal creek that fed into Wassaw Sound. When we pulled into that little creek there was a stick sticking up about a foot out of the water. This was obviously put there by someone for some reason unknown to me at that time. Well, we fished for a few hours, caught some nice reds, a few trout, having a good ole time. Wasn't paying to much attention to anything except the beautiful weather, the water, and the fishing. We were in the middle of the creek in about 20 feet of water BUT to get into that creek I had to go over a sandbar that was only six feet down. OK, I have fished Savannah for years so whats coming next is on me and me alone..... I looked over at that stick and it is now four feet out of water. I have only two feet to get out and the tide is dropping reeeaaaalll fast. (for those of you who know Savannah - you can attest to the big tidal swings). I get the anchor pulled quick, crank up and head out... to late.. we spent the next eight ours waiting for the tide to shift and come back in deep enuff to get off the bar. At one time we were 4 feet out of water. We spent the time digging shells. Picture below if it comes thru.
