Wow, looks a lot better now that the vegetation is out of the way. Looks like you will be moving her soon and getting on to the real task at hand. Good luck

Yes, there is a gasket there but!!! the shaft runs through the gimble bearing and quite possibly could be frozen in so the drive may not just pull off. You may need to spray the shaft from the inside with some PB Blaster to get her to free up.

I am guessing it has to be splined to provide drive....do you know how long the engagement of the splines is??? 3" 12 "??? is there any other support on the drive shaft other than the spline engagement?? a bearing ,maybe???

the more i think about this stern drive business and inboard motor issues....and not freezing up on me when i use it in the winter....the more i am thinking OUTBOARD conversion

The splines going into the coupler are only a few inches. When I yanked the drive off of mine, it needed to be rocked up and down a bit before it would break free.

X2 Bob.... the ujoint bellow is most likely rotten as well as the ujoints rusted. I used a rubber mallot and a lot of rocking to get mine off. (And it hadn't sat in the dirt for the last 20 years)

I hate to say it but that trailer looks just like mine. Is it a dilly, with 2,000 lb axles? The trailer frame looks the same, the ibeam for the tandem axles looks the same with the long drop on the center support.
I will caution you my boat 21' cheiftian weight is 4,100lbs on the axles. I lost many of the 5.3x12 C tires due to pot holes and broke a leaf spring.

I upgraded to 3,500lb axles and springs, 15" tires. But I did not rebuild the walking ibeam hangers and that almost got me into Big trouble this summer. The center support almost broke off the angle that bolts to the trailer. Luckily I caught this before hitting the road to come home. Bought a month boat morrage and brought the trailer home empty to repair. I am almost 100% sure the trailer would not have made it had I left the boat on the trailer.
I solved the problem with new 3"x1/4" angle, all new hangers like a normal trailer would use (got ride of the that long center support) and bolted it into the trailer frame with 6 - 1/2" bolts and a few 3/8 bolts on the bottom lip.
Pictures to come.

yes Dilly....and the axels rusted apart...they looked like 1 or 1.5" square thin walled tube axels....probably 2000 lbers.

i have pictures from today when i cut the axle stubs off the springs and ubolts and we pulled the trailer and boat away from the bank it was buried under...I jacked it up on blocks...and now i am ordering 2 new galvanized 3500 lb axles one with electric brakes

ill slide them under before i get the thing out of the guys yard.

Bob --- really looking great!!! :) Nice "un-earthing"! Man... it's great to see you getting it out of the earth! If left too much longer she would have been buried forever!

Watching with earnest...

Re: the starcraft islander rescue.....sorta.....got some work ahead!

hey got over there sunday and dug out the port side..the tops of the fenders were buried!!! I had the farmer drag the boat 2-3 feet away from the bank...first try broke my 3/4" dia rope!! I tied directly to the trailer frame..but I guess the inside edges are so sharp, with the pressure needed to move this baby from its berth, the trailer frame cut the rope!

refashioned some straps and chains...moved the rig sideways... i dug out the port side so ill be able to slide a new axle under the trailer...its basically on a hill, but near the top...it was hard keeping a good firm support...the soft earth was giving way...plus my jack doesnt lift STRAIGHT up....hairy at times...but I managed...

ordered one axle for now with new tires and rims and hubs and u bolts...$575 with shipping....everythign is galvanzied!!! 3500 lb 2" square axle.

ill order a second axle with electric brakes for the second axle after I get this rig home...
the tires are good for 2050 lbs each!! the hubs are good for 1750 lbs each.... I figure the boat is 2000 lbs...with motor( according to the brochure) and the trailer probably weighs 700 lbs...and the misc stuff inside...should still be less than 3500 lbs

That boat might be free but you have some time and $ into getting that thing road worthy, let alone sea worthy.
I read you plan to add electric brakes on one axles, do you plan on ever using the trailer in salt water?
If so I highly recommend you go with kodiak disc brakes, electric and salt does not do well.
I would get ride of those long center I beam brackets. See pictures of what happened to mine they almost broke off.
Also included a couple pictures of my fix. New 3"x1/4" angle, new hanger brackets.
I also added more tongue support with some additional 3" channel bolted to the trailer frame and u-bolts at the tongue.

Its what? a 1200 pound boat maybe. I don't think trailer brakes would be necessary would it??

Just keep the truck under 100 mph.:D

Hey tgp... islander is approx. 1900... so add trailer, motor, gear and I bet he'd be north of 3000 lbs. Trailer brakes... yah never hurts!!! :)
