got up at 5:30 this morning and put the weather network on, hoping the major blizzard they have been forecasting would be downgraded, or heading out to sea.....nope, 20" of snow and near hurricane force winds. that was kick number 1.

while watching the weather, i heard some odd noises coming from the heating system in the basement, so i head down to investigate......find water running out of the firebox on my wood/oil combe boiler. that was kick number 2

stayed home from work to make calls for quotes on replacement, three different guys came, all three said that the flue was not up to current codes and they cant connect a new system to said flue........lowest quote to replace the boilers and flue came in at $12000.:faint2: that was the kick that hurt the most.

Have you checked out an air to air heat pump. Mor efficient than your wood/oil Combe. A least when you use oil it is. Ours was installed for just a little over the price you were quoted.

FYI a close relative uses oil/radiant water to heat. Their oil bill is close to 30% higher than our electric bill.

WOW nwcove what bad news! I feel your pain as well. I remember when I lived up in North Eastern Pennsylvania when I was a young teen and I do remember our coal burning furnace and it heated water that circulated around the multi-story house in base board registers. And I can remember when that furnace decided to blow up one evening. Not knowing much at that age, I imagine the replacement cost were probably similar... Hope everything works out good for you though! :cold:

... but look at all that money you're saving on air conditioning every year, do you even own an air conditioner?

I don't own one in our house. There are at least two weeks out of the year I wish I did LOL

My AC will be turned on sometime in April and won't be turned off until the middle of October.

We get about two weeks between the pellet stove season and the ac season. Michigan.

HVAC is almost highway robbery there. I remember installing gas furnaces with ac, flue, ductwork, thermostat, the whole 9 yards for $5000 back in the 90's. Have you considered DIY?

These units are becoming very popular in northern Pa

They are nice outside, no dirty smoke/ash inside.
Unfortunately to much BTU loss, unless you have a ton or two of wood and it does not matter.

did some research on those units....they have there ups and downs as all systems do. for what i need...the outdoor combo is just not cost effective.

YUP, I would estimate it looses 1/4-1/3 of the heat produced to the great outdoors.
