I have used a 100 watt light bulb under a cover with good results.

Re: Total Mayhem At The Boat!! (Totally Screwed)

The bilge pump was on. The weather was so cold that when the ice turned into water and made its way into the boat because it was so cold in the boat it turned into ice as soon as it got to the bilge. Other wise my bilge pump should have taken care of it. But the investigation is still ongoing on how the water got there in the first place.

I know its too late, but having the plug out WOULD have saved you. If water got in, it was liquid. It wouldn't have frozen the instant it hit the bilge, it would have ran right out. (the bilge is going to be warmer or equal temp to the surrounding air, it won't be cooler.) Lots of boats stored like that every year...

Anyway, my advice. Sit back, take a breath, and don't do anything in a hurry at this point. Do NOT put a heater in the boat! If you have an indoor garage space you can get it into, do that, but a heater in a boat is bad news...

In my opinion, its highly unlikely you have structure damage. Wood doesn't rot in below freezing conditions. Its also unlikely the pressure of the ice actually damaged anything, there is plenty of room for expansion. (and fiberglass is flexible enough anyway)

As far as the engine, its most likely fine, but your starter is probably shot. If it isn't bad now, it will fail sometime this season. There is no way I'd trust it!

Reading this thread over again I'm betting the battery is dead from....... running the bilge pump. I wonder how much water would've been in there if the BP hadn't worked at all.

I'm thinking next winter you'll be checking in on your boat periodically and not just letting it set unattended all winter.

All of you guys are talking about storing inside. First of all i don't have anywhere to store it inside. Second of all I don't have a trailer for the boat and its currently on blocks outside. And what is this oil heater you guys are talking about? Can anyone send me a link to were i can get one and the right one that i need. Thanks for all your help!

T_Herrod , I would love to get the boat in a heated building if it wasn't so big and expensive to do so. That being said the boat sit's outside and will sit for a while. The temperature should get better and warmer soon so hopefully that will speed the process. Currently I just cleaned up the boat and put the mooring on. Next weekend ill go down again and get that plug out and bust out my hammer and breaker and some elbow grease and get all the ice out of the cabin before it melts and ruins the carped and wood floor. Then I will put on the regular summer canvas so i get more sunshine and warmth in the boat to speed the melting process up.

Totally screwed?...possibly. Gonna cost you big bucks...definately! You can either trash the boat later and lose a lot, or spend some bucks now and possibly save it. Lots of good advice here already.

I have seen this happen before......twice. One was saved and the other hull was beyond repair. That was the last time my buddy ever stored outside in the Winter.

Get it into a heated space and let it thaw slowly. Whatever that cost will be will be lower than the rebuild later. It'll thaw from the outside in, thus relieving the stresses correctly.

Chipping away at the ice - bad idea. Putting localized heat on the top of the ice - even worse idea. Removing the transom drain plug - mandatory. Drill it out and repair the hole later if needed. Trying to start the engine - worst idea of all.

Did you google garboard plug? You don't have one anyway. Fiberglas right? So you don't have a garboard plank (wooden hull).

If ya cant put in at least a light bulb,I certinany would not put an oil heater in,unless its one of them electric ones. At this point I think ya should get out the plug and wait it out.

Yea i will put a nice high wattage light in there. I mean i have a bilge light in there as it is that is powered by the battery but it would kill my bats.

Re: Total Mayhem At The Boat!! (Totally Screwed)

the ONLY thing you need to do at this point is establish a hole of some sort in the bottom of the boat and through the ice to said hole.... the next step will come when the ice has melted and that will be drying and looking for/fixing/ damage

forget heaters, light bulbs, hammers, chisels, etc and just get an open drain..... nature will melt the ice for you

you're very welcome....... No way to know what you need till we see what you have.... they come in two different styles also... The difference is which side the threads are tapered toward...

being in the bottom of the hull I would bet you have a 3/4" plug but that's only a guess

I dont think a light bulb will help at this point, as there is already a bunch of ice present.. a 100w light bulb can keep a small space from going too much below freezing, but that's just ambient air, and i doubt it will help with melting the kind of ice you are dealing with. The link to that home depot electric/oil heater is what I was thinking, i use one in my basement apt and it keeps it nice and toasty (in previous years, before i built the apt, it would only be a few degrees warmer than outside down there) although there IS a warning on it to keep objects away from the top and sides, and a 'caution hot' sticker on it.. :cold:

So.. maybe not a good idea to put right in the engine bay.. but maybe i missed it, is the boat covered at all? (stick framed tarp structure/mooring cover/camper top?) Here's my thought and theory, if you absolutely can not move the boat into a warm place, get a good quality tarp, preferably black, maybe silver on the one side like mine, and wrap it over the boat, mainly covering the rear deck/cockpit area. It will heat up some with the sun, and trap a bit of heat.. Open the cabin hatch, door, and engine cover, maybe a small oscillating fan down in the cabin, and stick an oil/electric heater somewhere by the back deck or captains seat of the boat. Set on med it should not melt anything or start a fire, Ive touched the top of mine a few times and its warm, but not an instant burning the skin kinda thing.

Defiantly get that plug OUT of the transom one way or another, maybe use a heat gun in a localized area (if you can get to it) at the rear of the bilge to get through the ice and down to the inside of the drain on the transom..

Here is a redneck thought I just had... driveway salt? it will make a mess to clean in the spring, but it might help eat away the ice a bit and break it up...

You think if i would completely remove the drain plug with the base if its a good idea to leave it that way until i get the right plug? Or i have to put in a new one? And should i drill trough the ice were the plug is? Because there is ice down there as well.

There won't be ice after the thaw. Drill away to let the soft water out.

as I said above yes you MUST drill through the ice.... and no you don't need a new plug till you are ready to put it in the water

TAKE the 1" hole saw I mentioned above with you... if you fail to get the plug out just drill another hole near it.... you can patch it OR install a new plug in that hole.... wouldn't hurt a thing to have more than one drain plug

Yea i have a mooring cover on the boat. I was thinking i can buy a cheap tent to cover the transom and then just let a big tarp to also cover the transom from any rain that my be coming by. I dont think ill put a heater in the engine bay but i might turn on the heat in the cabin and maybe get a small heater at the captains chair facing the engine and let that sit there for a few days. I dont think salt would be good for the fiberglass and it would definitely make more of a mess. And definitely i just ordered a new plug and will be replacing the old one!
