Re: Total Mayhem At The Boat!! (Totally Screwed)

My boat is in a relatively new shop building, and I'm even paranoid now! I ALWAYS leave the plug out, but for some reason I want to check now... Never know, the roof might have caved in from the relatively minimal snow we had, and it might be dumping all the spring melt right into my boat...

umm, back in an hour or so!

I hope all is well with your boat. I hope no one experiences this like i did. Everyone should learn from my mistake and laziness. Lesson learned! DON'T BE LAZY !!!!

With Duct tape and a tarp you can make a tent under the boat. Then use a kerosene fired shop heater to warm up the bilge from below to melt the ice...Worth a try!

Yea i was thinking of buying those cheap tents and putting it over the boat and then getting a big tarp and wrap the boat with the tarp. But i think ill stay away from the heater. Im in no real rush to get it melted.

How long do you guys think it will take for the ice to fully melt? It suppose to me jumping from 40-60F all of this week and next week and supposed after it should be getting warmer since spring is coming.

I too suspect you'll be fine and reading your post reminded of this....hopefully it makes you feel better. Last winter a client of mine had his boat professionally winterized, shrink wrapped and stored by a company that specializes in this. He got a call in the spring about a "little problem". It turns out a family of raccoons broke into his boat and took up residence all winter. You can't imagine the mess.

I've had raccoon in my boat before. They ripped all the vinyl and pooped everywhere they could. That one sucked!

Hook up the trailer and drive it down here, and I'll give you an estimate when you get here--but take the plug out first.

I would guess that trying to accelerate thawing with any concentrated heat could do more damage than slow even thawing. PLug out, it shold thaw from the bottom and drain, leaving an air pocket; nothing to refreeze then.

(not that you need more to worry about, but how's that water weight and your trailer?)

BigDog, something that has come up several times that you haven't acknowledged is your need to get insurance. I understand not wanting to spring for full coverage for that boat, but even if you aren't legally obligated (you would be here) you are morally obligated to carry liability coverage. It's cheap and easy and it's the right thing to do. Good luck with the de-disasterizing.

Pretty sure he said he doesn't have a trailer. That's part of the problem with getting it into heated storage for him. He said it was up on blocks in the yard so no easy way to move it.

There is no trailer. I have the boat up on blocks.

An estimate for what? There is nothing anyone can do at this point. I just have to wait till it all melts.

I agree, let her dry out and see what you have. May just be a clean up.

you asked, how long before it thaws? I replied, bring it down here and I'll give you an estimate (of how long the rest of it will take.) No way else to answer your question.

Thats crazy!! Even if i did have a trailer i would not bring it down just to show you and give me a estimate. Your hours away and that would just be a wast of gas and time. No offense tho. If it was something really serious and you could have helped me out the i would have brought it to you without a doubt. Thanks for the offer!

There's a very easy way - it just isn't free!

I think the "give an estimate" comment was TIC and it went over his head.

To answer the original question, I have some experience in that regard.....
I have an old clunker at my mountain cabin that is merely for the kids to play in. Left the plug in the first winter (didn't really care - it won't ever go in the water again) and it filled up with about a foot of water....er ice. It took till about mid April to thaw completely.

I think you should tow it to my house. Its like 80? today. It would be thawed out by tomorrow. Of course it would take you a week to get here so you could probably turn around when you were half way here. I do have the tools that will get your plug out though!
