Does not anyone in this country understand this energy problem we are in?<br /><br />The basic problem is too little supply chasing too high of demand. Breaking up oil companies, reducing fuel taxes, windfall profits taxes and the like are all counter productive to what is needed.<br /><br />Tom Friedman, in a recent NYT column, suggested who needs Al-qaida, when we have the US congress on the job doing their work!<br /><br />The way to balance supply and demand is what we learned in Econ 101--Let the price raise to the point where it changes behavior, and reduces demand.<br /><br />The quickest way to achieve this is to raise prices by increasing the fuel tax, and spend the extra revenue by improving mass transit and funding a "Manhattan" type project for alternative fuels.<br /><br />The only way to get serious about reducing our need for Foreign oil is to reduce the demand for it, and make alternatives cost effective. Anything else is just blowing smoke
