It's a 1974 26' Tolly w/7.4 merc. straight shaft.

Commander.jpg
It's a 1978 Commander w/twin 470's / alpha.

They are very different boats with thier own appeal. We're on Vancouver Island, we like to cruise around slow mainly, the weather is usually calm, we have a baby, economy is a concern and so is value as an investment (we're not rich). My Christmas question to you is which one would you buy?
ho ho ho folks!

Re: Vote for a boat please

I personally like the Commander. Have a sea trial and a mechanic look at it.(Worth the money) As said earlier Im not a great fan of the 470 but I could deal with it since I am a mechanic. I like the lines of the Commander also better but that's just my thoughts. Its really up to you. I like twins but they cost more money but it will get you back if one fails. But I also perferr inboards but they have their problems also. If you like them both...Seatrial them both and then have a survey done. Good luck

Wow, tough choice... I'm a big fan of straight inboards but in my opinion the 26' Tolly with 7.4 is going to be a bit underpowered I think.. Thats a big boat for a single screw...

Would have to seriously consider the Commander as my choice for no other reason that the twin 470's...

The only way to know for sure is a seatrial...

Re: Vote for a boat please

I've always had a problem with the forefoot on a Tolly, they tend to dig into the next wave in a following sea. More of a displacement hull. I had a buddy (Can't remember length...32-35', or so.) of mine almost broach in 5-7 foot seas when running with them. The forefoot dug in and turned him sideways (broach)...quite a site. Barely had enough power to recover, twins. He thought he was going over. We were runnig near him in a 28' Rampage, without any problem. Actually it wasn't that bad out. This was totally unexpected and shook him (and the six on board) a little bit. We can talk all day about seamanship, but it caught him cold. He was a USCG Licenced Captain as well, with experience. Notice the forefoot difference in you PICs. Just a thought that always stuck with me! ;) I don't mean to offend Tolly owners...this is just one story on an otherwise fine boat. :(

Re: Vote for a boat please

The Tolly owners have a rather large following here in the northwest. I've heard about them getting swamped by a couple people. 90% of them were made with 5.7 so the 7.4 should be good. It seems to slide through the water nice, never plowing or wallowing before it planes... if you know what I mean. They're definately one of the most secure investments afloat (very popular). There's no question they're a good boat. The Commander is over 2000 pounds lighter so it will have a performance advantage. The interior layout is very similar but the Commander has more hardwood and less veneer in it. I like them both so I'm stuck, my wife feels the same way, if anything maybe we're leaning towrd the Commander. I told my dad this and he laughed (40 years boating) he insists that the Tolly is the best 26' boat ever made. I wish this were an easier decision! Merry Christmas folks. :)

Magster,

My vote goes with the Commander. It looks cleaner.

I WOULD NOT do anything without a thorough inspection by a qualified marine inspector. Spend a couple hundred $$$ and get an opinion.

I'm not particularly worried about the 470's. Although, I'll admit I like the straightforwardness of the single IB.

The twins will make handling a dream. Parts are available and if she's sound, it should hold value, if well kept.

Re: Vote for a boat please

Wow, both boats look great. The commander realy looks great. If both survey good. I don't know. The tolly is older and I don't like the visabilty out the rear of the cabin. This makes it a pain to back in from the lower station. The power in the tolly is more than adequate and the single screw is no big deal once you've mastered it. I feel that one properly maintained engine is worth more than two half maintained ones. I don't like the 470 merc. and two of them would make me twice as unhappy. I am not familar with the commander or it's layout. The tolly is pretty much tried and true. I am going to have to say go for the commander. If that rascal is as well maintained on the inside as the outside (I'm sure it is). As the others have said sea trial and survey.

You know what's strange? I know the Commander will outperform the Tolly, handle better, get better fuel economy, it's newer, it has bit nicer trim inside... but when you get in them, the Tolly seems twice the size, way more comfortable and stable. I like the Tolly, am I nuts or what?
Tolly's hold their value quite well and there seem to be a lot of them here on San Francisco Bay. But I like ANYTHING better than sailboats, so what can I say. :D ...Bob in Calif...

One vote here for the Tolly...

Also, maintenace costs aren't even close if you compare outdrives to straight drives...straight drives win. Weigh this against the possibility of hitting something and bending a prop or shaft.

Re: Vote for a boat please

hehe :) I like the 'old girlfriend' thing, that's funny. Good feedback on this guys. We really appreciate it... this is our biggest purchase next to our home and we're just a little nervous about the whole thing. We're taking a trip to the mainland to see a few more boats and then we'll get a survey on our favorite and go from there. Any other thoughts? Thanks again.
I would stay away from the 470's. One is difficult enough, but 2? Phew!.......

Re: Vote for a boat please

I am not familiar with either boats as they are not popular on the great lakes. Personally, I like the Tolly. It treminds me of a 28 Bertram with a fly bridge. I would take the straight inboard over the outdrives any day. No maintenance besides the single screw. With the outdrives you need to change oil annually, and remove not one, but two to grease the U joints. May be tough to learn to control the single screw, but as said earlier, once mastered you will have no problem. As with how she handles in the rough, it sounds as though that is a mute point as you cruise where it is smooth. Just my thoughts! Enjoy the shopping experience, I wish I was looking at a different boat!

Re: Vote for a boat please

magster,
I have worked in Marina's in the past and have seen(and worked on) many boats/yachts up close.Personally,I would take the Tollycraft. It is a heavier boat, more sea-kindly,simpler maintenance.Outdrives have many parts just waiting to let you down. The Commander may go faster, but when the waves kick up I want the Tolly hull under me.
On inboards,it is important to keep an eye on the shaft log(where the driveshaft runs thru the hull).Sterndrives, watch for deteoration of the outdrive seals(rubber).Tollycraft company has been around a long time....
Don't forget to turn on that bilge blower for 1 minute before starting! A gas fume detector below decks is also a great idea.

Re: Vote for a boat please

Magster, tough choice but take the Tolly if it surveys well. Both have deservedly good reputations and inflated resale value / demand so don't do it for those reasons. I think Commander also has a deserved high reputation for quality (Tollys I would think of as only maybe a little above average), but this offsets against the different reliability of the power options in your case, so don't do it for that reason either. Probably most of the quality problems with these boats will already have worked themselves out anyway.

Do it because you won't notice the extra speed/handling from the Commander half as much as you will notice the extra room in the Tolly. Do it because you'll save big $ on maintenance with a single inboard. Don't hesitate over docking. If I could dock a 41' president with a single screw (although I'm pretty rusty :( ), you can park your tolly -- it will just be a workout for your wife on the bow with the big fender and boathook for a while ;) but then you can heap scorn on those fancy twin prop boaters who still can't dock.

Do it so you can slow down and enjoy your coffee when boating instead of running a boat that needs to run at speed all the time. Do it because I will bet the Tolly will ride much better than a Commander in the chops you will generally get in the strait and in among the islands and you will be able to stay on the gas in comfort more often. But don't mistake the Tolly for a trawler either. It planes so it is only a half decent bad weather boat, but it's good for the inner coast waters and it stacks up well against other 26' unless you are in really big swells where you need to power your way out. Unless you plan to go out on the west coast, you should be able to quarter any sea you find and I wouldn't worry about broaching the tolly so long as you know when to stay at anchor (I doubt you'd be comfortable in the commander out there either).

Do it because, as good as a Commander is, it is an average sized 26' which means you will still feel a little like you're in a VW van (with nicer trim). The Tolly is a real cabin cruiser. That's its mystique. There is no other 26' boat that feels like it is 34'. Do it because you can play scrabble and make dinner at the same time.

There, I am expecting to split the commission with the broker selling the Tolly.

Re: Vote for a boat please

hahaha That's good advice and funny too! I made an offer on the Tolly this morning. The broker has called back with a counter-offer from the owner already... I've given another so we'll wait and see... I really like the boat but I don't have any more money to offer so hopefully he goes for it! I got a picture of it today, this is it.

I think you're doing the right thing with the Tolly....we've talked before about the 26'...unless you've been in one, you can't believe how big a boat it is for 26'...they're very popular in the NW.
My only caution is the side windows....if you got the old '73 style, you'll need to, eventually, do some major replacing ($4000 US, w/labor  ). If this boat has the outside flanged side windows, you're fine.
I presume you've checked the engine cylinders.
And since you run in salt water, choosing between a straight-shaft inboard over Merc afphas is a no-brainer.
There's a '78 in our marina, totally new awlgrip, looks like it just came off the showroom floor. Guy has received offers for double what he has in the boat, won't sell. It's gorgeous...keep yours up, and you'll always be able to sell it...but why would you????!!!

Re: Vote for a boat please

Yeah for sure! This one has had the side windows repaired about 15 years ago and it looks to be holding up properly. The boat was converted to a big block when the small block expired. It was a new (not rebuilt) 7.4 in 1996. It runs nice and sounds very healthy. I saw a copy of a 1998 survey and it did have 3 items of interest regarding some delamination under the side windows (4" patch on each side) and a patch on the bow around the windlass. They survey said it wasn't a major concern. I'm having the same guy survey it again if we can finalize the price :) I'll get a mechanical as well, at least a compression test and risers checked. It has the FWC system that cools the exhaust manifolds, that's a bonus too. Those things may have been repaired anyways. Other than those things it had a clean bill of health which I think is pretty good for a 29 year old. It's a little damp in there but all the other boats around it have a little fog in the windows too. Lotsa' rain here lately! I'll continue posting what happens with this, we have our fingers crossed! Happy New Years :p
