Hopefully it turns out as well as I think it will...

Anybody else brew your own? If so, what is your favorite recipe?

Even I am not perfect, but 2009? Things change so quickly in the brewing industry, two week old information is outdated! Yikes..

:)

But thanks, I will read through them..

I use to brew beer now we do wine. I found rain water was the best for taste and I once phoned a brew master in Australia and he told me to use Cane sugar instead of corn sugar.

I stopped making it due to my son was taking it to bush parties under age.

I use raw cane sugar, and our well water makes for some very good tasting beer, very pure water, our well is 500 feet deep and in a different aquifer than anyone else around us, we have actually bottled and sold it on occasion, it seems to be quite popular..the local hydrologist, said he believes it is a glacier aquifer that the water is quite old...he seems to think it is feeding off a very large underground ice sheet that resulted because of the last ice age several thousand years ago..

All I can say is YUM! I bet that's some good brew. If you ever decide to sell some let me know. I'd take some off your hands.

Who me. When I was a teen, dad and my step mom watched the bottom line very closely. You see my brewing days go back a wile. Ever had Huckleberry wine.;)

:confused::confused::confused:

Things may change in the brewing industry, but the basics of making beer haven't changed in 1000 years, even if the big breweries continue to streamline their processes.

Are you trying to gain every tiny efficiency that you can so that you can blow your nearby home brewers out of the water...or are you trying to make good beer?

Sorry, but the main reason that 98% of home brewers invest the time is so that they can use the simple, tried and true methods of making beer. It even caused a small revolution in England when CAMRA got rolling.
The goal is to make better beer than you can buy.

Making beer and making bread share many similarities... , and the chemistry is very similar.

If you really think that any commercial bakery can come up with a loaf of bread that rivals what a good home baker will produce, you are wasting your time making beer...find a commercial brew that suits your taste and just buy it.

The fact if you are using sugar, whether cane, corn, or whatever, in your beer suggests that you aren't really that concerned about quality.

Wow Tim,

It seems as if you and I have a different view on things!

But of course that is what makes the world go around. But I can say, I am concerned with my quality, which is why I continue to ask questions.

Thanks for the links to the previous threads on brewing, they have been very informative.

PS, My Daughter In Law is the head formulation person for a major bread company here in the states, she comes up with some interesting breads that are quite good..

Sorry, didn't mean to **** you off with my response...

:)

Hmmmmm....three people in a row thought my response was ...ummmm....abrasive...? My apologies then, it was not intended to be.
Passionate maybe. :)

Seriously though, what TECHNICAL advances in the past 10 years allow you to make better beer at home? We are essentially talking about food...and with all due respect to food processors, whether they be bakeries, breweries, or whatever. Is there any product that any of them make that cannot be outdone by a true home-made item?

That was my point.

If you want a better beer, make it yourself, but use the best ingredients available.

That is where the serious improvements have come n the past 25 years....availability of better ingredients to the home brewer....better hops...better malts and malt extracts...and better understanding of water chemistry.

But I will stand by my comment "The fact that you are using sugar, whether cane, corn, or whatever, in your beer suggests that you aren't really that concerned about quality."
Spend a bit more on ingredients and use 100% malt...including your priming solution.:)

That is like adding bread crumbs, oatmeal, or other filler to ground beef when you make hamburgers. ;)
McDonalds has hamburger fabrication refined to the nth degree...and are arguably the most efficient burger producer in the world...and have incredibly sophisticated equipment.
But two pounds of mixed ground round and ground chuck, a charcoal grill, and MY special sauce and you can keep those "advances". ;)

If you aspire to making great beers, get to your library and find a copy of either of his books....."Brewing better Beers" or "Advanced Home Brewing".

Let me clarify one thing, when I said I use raw cane sugar, it is only a tablespoon in the bottom of the 1 little bottle when I bottle the bear for the carbonation portion of the process, it is not throughout the whole process.

Wait, you put a bear in the bottle? If it's a black bear okay I guess, but if it's a grizzly I'd be afraid to pop the top!
