Re: What do you consider as 'Rich'?

No, actually you are bragging...or at least trying to. Unfortunately, the high emphasis you are putting on your stuff doesn't carry much weight relative to the general scope of this thread.
....just saying.;)
BP;):)

Nope... not bragging at all. Just saying that I bought some vehicles brand new and paid cash (3 of them actually).

This thread is about what defines rich, I already stated that people are getting "rich" and "happiness" confused.... which is still true.

Being rich isn't having your family together for the holidays, its about being financially independant. Its about having material wealth. Money in the bank, etc, etc...

Being happy is a lot of different things to a lot of different people... Being on my boat makes me happy. Spending time with my wife makes me happy. Not having a car payment makes me happy.... I could go on and on...

I agree, money doesn't buy happiness.... but it does make life easier. However, money makes me happy! :)

Re: What do you consider as 'Rich'?

Those are a bit dated but Maple Grove is loosley comprised of two areas, old and newer. I live in the newer area but there is no breakout amongst the two. Every one of my neigbors is a business owner, executive, lawyer, local celebrity etc. There are a some IT types and an engineer or two as well. Every parent of my kid's friends in the area are in the same boat. Like I said we are average where we live but are between 10 -20 years younger than most of them. There are a lot of 45-50 year olds with kids under 10. In my industry even mediocre salary package equates to better than average amongst other industries. The difference between my earnings and the top earners is astronomical. I am on the edge of breaking into the real money. It takes a lot of hard work, traveling and time away from the family which I haven't been willing to do but that will need to change soon (the traveling not the work). I suppose my point and the answer to your point above is I don't know or socialize with anyone not like the above just out of happenstance. That is "average" in my head since it is all I know.

I understand. My men's church group is quite amazing. We run the gamut from unemployed/just barely making it to ultra-wealthy (some live in 10+ mil mansions...). If we spent too much time in comparing our relative situations, we'd go nuts. So we just smoke and drink , make toys for poor kids at Christmas, build Habitat houses, watch football and have a real good time around each other. And we bury each other when we're done. Funny how we all end up the same at the end of the race to nowhere......

George Bailey, the Bedford Falls Building-and-Loan savior (It's a wonderful life), was toasted as "the richest man in town", even though financially, he never had squat.

Couldn't agree more.

Maybe being truely "rich" is really not about us, at all.

Well I know you mean Income and I consider anyone making over $100,000
a year rich. That amounts to $1,900 a week.

Re: What do you consider as 'Rich'?

I have traveled 26 countries and all 50 states. have big boats and porsche cars, more money in the bank than I will never spend. I am the poorest person that I know. My wife of 52 years is about to die. I would give everything that I own to see her live. I don't know what rich is.

My partner died when she was 48, she said "I've lived a full life and have no regrets , its time , some children in the cancer wards on the next floor will never get the chance I had."
I had to let her go.

Re: What do you consider as 'Rich'?

As long as you have a roof over your head and have your health and are happy then that is rich.

We live in a small city with median familiy income of over a 100,000 and we all rush around like we're crazy working long hours, buying things we really don't need and not spending enough time with our families. People get caught up causing extra stress for themselves buying expensive cars that in 10 years will be in a junkpile somewhere.

The things you own endup owning you.

In the next five years I'm hoping to pay off all debt, keep spending to a minimum as I have all the jumk I need and try to simplify things a bit.

Agreed, we don't flaunt anything, I prefer to stay mostly conservative with the way we live. Even my boat is 7 years old and tiny. When clients come to town, most worth well over $10M, I drive them around in my 10 year old minivan. Most folks I know generally don't compare situations overtly.

I feel rich because I have a car with power windows and locks!

No, really, I feel rich because I have a place to call home, a family to fill that home, and the ability to put food on the table. The perk of being able to afford a 12 year old boat is just a fantastic bonus. :D

.....ahhh, you noticed that as well Skargo. ;):D
Yep, ditto that.
BP:cool:

Just sayin' ;)

I think rich might be defined as being able to live comfortably off of your assets income. That's just my own personal opinion. As evidenced by this thread, there are many different definitions.

I recall when I was in college and I was a waiter at a restaurant. This was in the mid 1990's. Another waiter started at the restaurant one day and he was a stock broker but the market had tanked and he lost much of his business and was forced to find supplemental income. He had made $100,000 as a broker and I was awe inspired at someone who made that much money but was only maybe 5 years older than me. I still remember he drove a 2 door Saturn and I visited his house once which was a modified new two story in a mediocre part of town but might as well have been a mansion. I was living on well under 20k per year and recall thinking to myself how great it'd be to live like that and make 100k some day. The bummer I learned about making a little bit of money is you end up paying such large amounts of it in taxes. My wife owns a consulting company she started from scratch with a phone and basically zero dollars in her late 20's some years back. It's a bummer to work as hard as she did, doing it the hard way only to have to give so much away to taxes then be considered as rich by some. Thats just not the case. Writing quarterly tax checks will change your outlook on things.

100k a year isn't much anymore, at least not what it sounds like, depending on where you live and your debt load (ie student loans)

Especially not for a single income family with children... add in living somewhere that houses are 250k+ for a basic 3 bedroom, it's hardly rich.

Rich is having the means to buy anything you want, I think very few people can do that...

Money does make me happy. For others it may be donuts, a comfortable chair, or a nice lawn. Having money in the bank puts a smile on my face... :)
