What software to make back up copies of Xbox games?

All, my kids have an Xbox 360 slim about 11 months old. For some reason it keeps destroying one particular game and I have to keep replacing it. The game is COD Black Ops and literally the last one I had to replace lasted for a couple weeks and the console said the disc was unreadable. The game never got touched by human hands except mine, had no scratches at all and looked perfect. It only was played a few times and the center plastic piece that I realize can crack from the heat was still like new. I may be crazy but of all the kids' games, the COD Black Ops game seems to be made of thinner material than the rest of the games. In any event, I replaced the game again last night and thought it made sense to figure out how to make a copy, use it and keep the original in the media safe. You can copy the game onto the hard drive but even though I do that, when the game becomes 'unreadable' the Xbox won't even initiate the game from the hard drive as you still need the game disc to get it to initiate. I'm getting very frustrated by what I see as a clear product related issue.

Does anybody know of a free or trial game software out there that will work for this?

Thanks

Personally, I think this thread should be locked. It is discussing illegal activities. I know, it sucks, but it's illegal to copy software for any purpose, even just to make "backups."

I advise the moderators kill this one.

No, it is not illegal to make a copy for your own personal use, it has always been legal to make a back up copy just in case something happens to your original copy. However it is illegal to make a copy that you give away, or sell, this has always been a part of the software agreements we have all agreed to when we buy the software. If he is not trying to sell illegal copies, then he is not breaking US copyright law.

waterinthefuel,

I advise you to actually look up and understand the laws on copyright here in the US.

I don't think it works to make a copy of a console game...I have done it with PC games and I tried it with a PS2 game because a game disc was getting bad so I tried it with a newer game and I got it to copy, but due to the disc format it wouldn't load on the machine...Copying the physical data is one thing, setting it up so the console knows how to boot it up is another...

It is not illegal to make backups of any media you own. However to maintain in the legal aspect of the law you have to keep the original.

With that said, You can't simply put in a back up game into your Xbox. It wont read it. In order to do this, you have to hack/chip/modify the game console. it's not hard to do..
The draw back.. Xbox Live will see the modified console and ban it from the servers. You will no longer be able to use Live in the future. Even if you revert back to the original settings. If you don't use, Live, then by all means modify your console.

No it is def not illegal to make a copy. Recall when the laws first were written when Pc's were new. You were actually breaking the law back then just having the computer have the program in memory. It was considered a copy in memory. The laws for backing up your software were changed a long time ago allowing you to maintain a backup copy for exactly this purpose. I am not going to be shelling out 60$ one more time for what seems to be a defective disc. It is certainly gutsy to ask moderators to lock my thread when there is nothing illegal about it. I can search google all day and go in blind but prefer the company and suggestions of folks on here. Clicking on a random link for one of the million hits on google is a path to a virus.

Making a backup will not solve your problem. You have an issue with your Xbox. Black Ops did the exact same thing with me and you will eventually get the "red ring of death". If you arent familiar with that, google it. But if you want to save your games, you can simply add an external hard drive to your xbox. Check out the xbox forums for simple instructions on how to do it.

The xbox has the 250gb hard drive but requires the disc in the drive to inititate. I'm thinking an external will just be an extension of the same process. The xbox is still under the one year warranty and I'm considering returning it for service before the year expires. The crazy thing I just can't get over is why only Black ops is becoming unreadable each time. Other discs get played including other COD 2 and they never have this issue. As for the ring of death, on the Xbox slim, the ring of death isn't that uncommon. For us it usually means there is an update that for some reason the xbox can't seem to handle. After several reboots, the xbox finally says to itself that there is an update that needs to be done and the ring goes away and all is well until the next update. What kills me here is I don't play any game or even use the machine except for Netflix and I hate spending time on this stuff. Generally speaking the xbox slim is suprisingly troublesome given how careful we are with it and the games.

I would definitely send it back for service. You can go onto the xbox website and start a troubleshooting ticket and xbox will email you the shipping label. Black Ops has been troublesome for most of the guys I play with and that is why they converted over to an external hard drive and just run the game from the hard drive rather than the disk.

Yeah, I did forget to mention that. Any modifying you do will expose you to the "xbox live" cops but from what I understand about the process, when you modify the console to read from the hard drive, you are basically just adding a bigger hard drive.

In any case, I dont want to suggest you do anything that could compromise your gaming so just send your console back for servicing and the Black Ops cd should work fine

I agree with sending it in to get fixed and not doing anything to your console.
