Re: Will Gas Prices Park Your Boat?

I look at it this way...the percentage increase for my total costs (boat, gas, insurance, gear, etc.) from the increased gas prices is not that significant. Yes, it hurts when pumping the gas but, for now, it is still worth it to me. If it reaches a point where I feel the need to "park" my boat, a For Sale sign will go on it! We have been trying to reduce spending in other areas to help cover increased cost of everything including boating/camping.

I have one in college and another starting next year. If I can survive these years it will, hopefully, be as good as when they came out of diapers and off the baby bottle :)

Re: Will Gas Prices Park Your Boat?

nope i wont let it effect my boating. I know its high but what isnt. Id rather eat peanut butter and jelly all week than give up my boating on the weekend. I travel to lake erie 125 miles one way. Towing my boat in my 2500 hd sierra i get 8 mpg. IF the gas is 3.50 a gallon now it will take 15.625 gallons to get there. Thats 55 bucks. My boat is a 2000 trophy 2352 it has 101 gallon tank. I wont fill it up im only 6 miles out. even at 3 mpg say round trip 20 miles all day trolling and what not. say 7 gallons of gas. Thats 25 bucks. On average ill spend 150 bucks a trip to erie just in fuel. Where else can you go for 150$ Spend all day there have fun with friends drink a few beers and catch some walleyes? Thats a great deal even if it goes to 4 or 4.50 a gallon Its not that much more money maybe another 25 bucks total. Ill keep my boating and fun. I just hope other people see this the way i do!!

with the less desirable lake being 2.5 miles away and the better lake 4 miles away. 70 hp boat and 5.0 litter tow vehicle. its not that much of a deal breaker. like a previous post if it gets to where i have to park it cause i cant afford it the a for sale sign goes on it. boating to me means a long summer vacation, memories with the family and therapy. it may be a little more fishing, beaching and anchoring. but not a whole lot.

Not for our family. With 3 kids that love to go out on the boat, this is more of a family experience so it is easier to justify than a day fishing for just myself.

We will cut other items from the budget before we reduce our lake time!

I can't get much less usage than I do now. Twice/year.

Gas prices have NO impact. I have a 12 gallon load.

I'm getting completely out of boating, in general.

I live in the desert Southwest and boating here is a PITA.

While we have property, on a lake in Alabama, my boat is not there. So, I sell what I have here and go with what we have there.

Re: Will Gas Prices Park Your Boat?

park your boat? Nope! Boating fun with the family is still a bargin imo. I can take my family out, plus a couple of the kids friends, for a full day of tubing and skiing and might burn 30 gallons of gas. So i spend $120, $130 for an entire day of fun for 6 people. That is a bargin. How much do theme park tickets cost, 80-90 bucks each or more, plus $15 meals? You still really can't beat the fun you can have with the entire family for the money on the boat. We make cuts elsewhere, like eating out for example. We basically quit eating out. Most families spend a couple hundred bucks a month easy on eating out. Whenever the kids gripe about us forgoing an expense, we simply tell them that the money has to come from the boat fund. That ususally shuts them up because they would rather take friends to the lake than anything else. So pack your lunch, skip the car wash, mow your own grass, whatever it takes, but don't park the boat!
i am soo with ya!

nope! with the kids getting older, i need to "purchase" those memories. with my duramax i can squeak out around 16-17 towing,(5000#) and a hard day on lake Mojave burns 20 gal. I agree with others, i'll cut elsewhere first. summers are too short as it is.

Nope, won't affect us. Our boat(s) get great mileage. What's funny is our 9' inflatable burns more fuel than our 22' boat.

Last year I filled up the 4 gallon tank in the 22, and at the end of the season, I still had 1.5 gallons left

I tell you what, it's nice having a wind powered boat. :D

No option, however if I find that guy named Murphy I'm going to pound him !! The Wife and I just purchased a 1990 233xl Regal Ambassador after owning a 17foot Bonito last year. We have plans to do a romantic anniversary week on the Chesapeake Bay. Not long after we purchased and planned our getaway the gas prices started there thing (insert Murphy's Law). Since we have had the boat a lot of hard work and money has been invested into our "new" boat to get her back up to par. Having her parked for the summer? Nope. I will be selling a German Shepard (used), a used grill, used patio furniture....though. LOL

Not a chance! Gas prices are annoying, however the health benefits of being able to relax on the water outweigh that for me. I'm also fortunate enough to be a member of a club with a bunch of great people so good times can be had dockside too.

3.79 liters to a gallon. At $1.25 a liter you are paying the equivalent of $4.74 a gallon. Right now here on the street prices range from $3.49 to #3.79 a gallon. I was out for a bit today and I am checking prices. Prices have risen 40 cents a gallon over the past 4 weeks.

Re: Will Gas Prices Park Your Boat?

Being in the boat buisness I am glad to see all the NO's!

Last time gas got up to $4+ I was really suprised at how little it affected us, things dropped off a little but not nearly what you would expect, now the other big buisness in my area,Campers-motorhomes took a face plant but they were still moving some units.

The major difference being you need to go along ways away from home to make a trailer, motorhome worth it where with a boat you can put $50-$60 in it and still have fun all weekend.

But lets not get ahead of ourselve, gas has only gone up 30ish cents a gallon,California excluded, and is holding steady with OPEC saying they will cover the short fall caused by Libya going off line so I am not gonna throw in the towel just yet.

As for me I am 20 minutes from my launch and it only takes me 20 minutes or so to get to my fishing hole so prices really won't affect me too much, i may think twice about my favorite lake that is 45 minutes away though but again, I will wait for prices to get stupid before I worry about it.
