Re: Will Gas Prices Park Your Boat?

The gas price wont stop me. But the wife might! So I picked up a 10' jonboat to fish localy. The boat gas is cheep compared to the gas for the quads and the trip north to the cabin most weekends.

You think about every other recreational vehicle (quads/dirt bikes/moterhomes/airplanes/ect), and you're really not having any fun unless you're moving. Boating is the only thing that you can put it in the water, run the motor for 20 minutes, then leave it off for hours and have a good time. I doubt anything will change. :D

like i said in the other thread...gonna hook up the 31' holiday rambler to the expedition, pull it 40 miles to the state park, find a nice water front spot, go back and hook up the 21' four winns, fill up the tank, and spend a week...maybe two...camping and boating. tubing and fishing. oil speculators are NOT ruining MY or my family's fun!

Speculators will get theirs when demand crashes... it's not like 07 anymore, that year kicked off the whole green movement, and with the economy most people are more than prepared to save $$ and do things that don't require bunches of gas. I don't expect another $4/gal summer no matter what the talking heads say.

Re: Will Gas Prices Park Your Boat?

It cost me about $35 with 9 gallons of gas and oil and i just boat another 6 gal so i can have 15 gal on board and that will cost me about 50-60. But that won't stop me from boating i worked all summer all last year to get the boat i'm not going stop boating. I think all of us here have the same answer to this question were all here because it's to cold to go boating so were sitting on the computer waiting for the summer to come, am i right? i think the biggest thing that the gas price will do to me is make me work more and not be a lead foot with the throttle probably go to a slower cruising speed. :(

Re: Will Gas Prices Park Your Boat?

how much $ is your 'gas'?

it is currently ?1.30 a litre at the minute here.

= $8.42 a us gallon.

I will no longer complain (out loud) about the price of our fuel.

The boating trips won't stop, but I do plan on being a little more conservitive with the fuel. I won't be motoring as far or as fast. I average 1 MPG. If I slow down, I can up it to 1.5 MPG.

However, I do have a 250 mile trip coming up and I'm not looking forward to that fuel bill.

Doubt iit. We just got our boat. I am sure the 350 will be half way decent on fuel if I and not playing with the hammer down on it. Lake is about 30 minutes from me. I am sure I can con a bunch of others to go fishing and they would chip in for fuel.

Aye..the trailered and the gas canners will have a different opinion from the Fuel Dockers ;) ..

Fuel will prob reach 5-6 this season at the Fuel Docks..

Blow boaters will be out in numbers as allways...then the little guys are going to be zipping around here and there..

But the medium sized ( 30-40 ' ) guy will probably party barge there boats..

40' + .. they will still pull up to the Dock and ask for 300 gals of 6 doller/gal fuel :) . .. " please give me 2k in fuel " .. and they just bought almost 400 in drink and party favors lol..for a weekend !!

Blowboaters..they laugh ;) ..

Not one bit. I am 5 minutes from one lake, 10 from another, and 15 from the river. doubt gas will play a roll in my boating for the season, but the tow vehicle will be permeantly attached to the boat and the dust knocked off of the old beater for rainy days and the same for the Ninja for the clear days...

Re: Will Gas Prices Park Your Boat?

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones replying to this post. I live 11 miles from the launch, gas here is around $3.50 a gal. I have a 4 cyl truck that, for a 1998 model on its 2nd engine, STILL gets 20 mpg. The boat has a 16 gal tank, I think, so to fill it up is $50ish. BUT...I MIGHT burn half a tank over the weekend fishing, and MAYBE 2 gals in the truck. I have a company vehicle, so I don't use my truck for work. From launch to the furthest fishing spot, maybe 15 minutes. I won't feel the gas crunch to bad, if I do, I'll restrict the gf to crackers and water and only 3 outfits a week....lol.

Though I will admit, I didn't buy our sailboat with fuel savings in mind. Family enjoyment and fun is the main reason.

My ultimate boat would burn a lot more fuel than the sailboat. I would really like to have a 17 or 18 ft Alumacraft with an Evinrude E-TEC on the back. :)

Re: Will Gas Prices Park Your Boat?

Times are tough, and finances rough... But I will never let my boat sit idle. As others have already said, I'll cut back in other places. Pulling the tubes burns more fuel, sure, but seriously, how much more? If I burn a few extra gallons because of tubing, 10 - 20 more out of my wallet for the additional fuel is worth it to me. My family's happiness is of paramount importance to me. My happiness is pretty important to me, too;).

I don't think I could ever look at my boat and say, "Nah, gas prices are too high."

I guess I'm pretty fortunate, for the fact that I can always work extra hours, and overtime is good.

I don't see the actual boat time being impacted, but I do see buying a 6 cylinder tow vehicle instead of a big V8 in a month or so. (I only have a 17.5 Crestliner so it's an easy tow.)

Won't stop us from spending time on the water, something to be said for a 20' with a 3.0L... last time this happened (2 years ago?) it really reduced the number of big boats on the bay (Chesapeake), so less boat wakes, less company on the bay, was pretty nice.

Re: Will Gas Prices Park Your Boat?

you guys with the short season, you shouldn't think twice, because when you annualize it, it's not that much. I have a long season--April through December--so it will affect me.

If you pay to store, insure, maintain and worse, have a boat payment, you are worse off financially not using it.

Luckily, I don't have to trailer anywhere to use my boat. I don't do much skiiing, etc. so the occasions when the children use it for that won't matter much and I'm happy to see them use it. Myself, I cruise at mid speed and do a lot of drift fishing close to home (20 minutes boat ride). So bottom line, I don't like it; I won't waste fuel, but I doubt it will keep me from going out.
