Re: Will Gas Prices Park Your Boat?

7 hour drive to Valdez.. Figure around 250ish for the truck (diesel). Not sure on the boat fuel, new to me boat. Expecting 100 bucks per day for various cruising then drift fishing. so 550ish for the weekend for the fuel.. Hope to have a few friends along to share gas with.

Re: Will Gas Prices Park Your Boat?

Some others have said it but I will repeat it: The fun is in the boating and the time spent with family/friends. I have just as good as time (actually better) if we take dogs and grill or stop and get lunch for $50. I can grab a 20 pack of dogs, buns and a liter of soda for undr $10. I also have a 9.9 kicker that I toodle around the lake on for next to nothing, or if I don't have the gas money we stay closer to the launch and swim more. The point is get out and have fun! But don't go in debt to do it. Kids won't ever remember what they had for lunch that day, but they will remember the day spent with you.

It really stinks but I think we will find a way to cut some other things out (movies, eating out etc.) I'm thankful for the 4 stroke right now. By the way, my first post ever!

My rig sips fuel.. May not be as good on it as a 4 popper, but almost and way faster..

If I was still running the old 2 stroke I would be feeling the pinch.. Mine drank the juice... I can't imagine what those big smokers do to fuel..

Every weekend with no rain... Will be out on the lake..

Well I can always go back to my canoe and 3HP motor, and my paddles are still hanging in my garage...one way or the other, I'll find the water!...

I think annual slip rentals will start looking like the bargain.

Re: Will Gas Prices Park Your Boat?

Gas prices helped my decision to park my Jeep and not do any offroading trips this winter, but I won't park the boat. Instead, I'll be working from home most of the week to lower the fuel bill and will consider a slip for the season so I don't have to drive the Dodge to go boating. Sure, the cost of the slip and extra maintenance on the boat will offset the fuel cost, but the extra convenience of not having to trailer the boat and getting on the water with less fuss will make up for it. The only concern then is fuel for the boat but there's a couple ways around that. I could get an external tank to fill the boat every other weekend or I could take the Dodge and haul her out to go to the local gas station. That'll give me a chance to clean and inspect the hull more frequently than waiting until the end of season haul-out.

I think my 20ft toon with the 10hp Chrysler will be used more than the sons 18ft Colbalt with the 302 Ford this year. We ran the heck out of the toon last year and I could boat all weekend on a 6 gallon tank. I think the most we used in one outing was about 4 gallons but we were out almost 18 hours back in August. I traded the boat, motor and trailer for an old VW Bug which I bought from a co-worker for $400 a few months prior. I think the trailer was worth more than the bug but we both ended up happy with the trade.

In the summer of 2008, gas at the marina was $5.25. Didn't stop or slow me down then, don't see why it would now.

I only buy the good stuff - my beer is about $9 a gallon. I'm too lazy to hunt for bait, so I buy it from my local Sportshop.

The launch ramp is 2 miles away on a side road at 30 mph. It didn't just turn out that way - I bought the house for that reason. The Sportshop is on the way.

When I go fishing I make a day of it. Out early, take a lunch, and be home for dinner. When I go to work I come home stressed. When I take a day off to go fishing I come home relaxed.

My fishing boat uses about 1.5 gal per hour, when running. When I'm fishing it uses 0 gph.

You can give me $4 a gal gas, or $5 even. OK, go for it, make it $8 a gal gas. Its still cheaper than the cost or beer and worms. And the effect of the boat on my blood pressure is priceless!

PS - I take a cellphone along for safety reasons, but its turned off. If the plant calls to come in to fix something, they're outaluck. (PPS - don't tell them that)

Re: Will Gas Prices Park Your Boat?

Kind of along the lines of some others, our summer vacations are completely built around boating. Most of the time we just sit out there or pull up to an island and hang out. For us even at $10 per gallon, we could still manage. The gas on the drive up would be a bummer since there is not much enjoyment there but our season doesn't start for several months so just save a little more between now and then just like you save for your Florida vacation. All of you that drive so far to get to the water, come on over to Minnesota where there are lakes everywhere. If we want to stay in town our closest lake is 30 seconds from the house.

My boats average 22-25 gallons an hour @ cruise which last year burned $100 per hour if it goes up another $ 1 per gallon Im going to burn $20-25 more per hour . In the Grand scheme of things does it really matter . But Im sure Ill be droping the hook more.
