Re: Will My Truck Tow My Newe Boat

Assuming you already own the truck, the trailer has working brakes, and are going to keep the boat... register the trailer, hook it up, and let us know.

IME a 2008 DC LB 4x4 V6 with tow package does fine with a 4000lb Cape Dory 25 on a 1600 lb trailer.

Agree. This is the approach that I would take. The truck is only part of the equation....the driver is the other. As an old farm boy I have towed many loads over 50 years and know how to do it safely. On the other hand the urban cowboy towing his bass boat with his Hemi down the highway at 70mph while talking on a cell phone makes me nervous.

Re: Will My Truck Tow My Newe Boat

For my 24' boat which is similar to the OP's boat, I tow it with a 1/2T Silverado with a 5.3L V8. I wouldn't even think of towing it with anything any smaller. As it is, I am going 30 MPH in low gear to get it up some grades and I have to very careful going down them and my trailer has 4 wheel disc brakes with an electric/hydraulic controller.

What weight and type of grades I just got a 05 silverado 4 x 4 with the 5.3 and I would of expected a lot better out of it.

My boat fully loaded is pushing 6500#. The grades I am talking about are going into Lake Tahoe in the Sierras. Not sure what percent they are but they are also high elevation...above 7000 feet which also takes a toll.

My Hemi powered Ram needs all it's got(on steep hills) towing our 5000 lb boat/trailer.

It would be a joke trying it with a V-6. :faint2:

That stands to reason. :lol::lol:

That's basically same size as my boat and I would have big reservations towing it on anything but level roads with a Tacoma A Tundra maybe...Tacoma no way.

A Tundra maybe? And you tow with a Silverado/GMC 5.3.The Tundra is way more then any GM.
I got rid of one of them just because it couldn't pull a 24ft boat on the interstate with out shifting it's brains out. Nice truck but it couldn't pull. I now have the Tundra and pull a 30 ftr

I agree depending on which Tundra. Base Tundra only has a 4.0L V6.

I have driven a Sequoia with the 4.6L. At least the year version I drove was a dog. Have another friend who has a Tundra with a 4.6 and tows 5000#. Says he wouldn't want to tow anything heavier.

The 5.7L Tundra is a very capable tow vehicle except they had transmission issues when they brought out the 5.7L. I would buy one of the 5.7 Tundras in a heartbeat.

Unless I'm mistaken, the current king of the mountain in regards to 1/2 ton towing is a V6 (ford ecoboost)... :) Just not the same v6 as the OP's though.
Ok, so I should go back and edit the post to read "a joke with a non twin turbo charged V-6". :)

Since the 6.2 liter V-8 also has the same 11,300 lb tow rating, I believe that I'd put my faith in that one for the long haul. Since it's also available in the F-150, where did they come up with that "best in class" towing thing for the Eco boost marvel? I guess it takes twin turbos in a V-6 to match the power of a good ole V-8. I wonder which one will last longer in towing service.

So which one is king of the hill(or mountain) in the 1/2 ton class? I'll take the V-8. :joyous:

Mine is an 07 5.7 4x4 4:30 gears 6 sp with tow. It only has 39000 miles on it and not one bit of problems with it. I guess i am just lucky.I bought just to pull my boat. Basically thats all it's used for.

Take it easy. Don't get unwound. Need to grow a little thicker skin. I thought the only V8 in the Ford 1/2 ton was a 5.0. Dodge, in that case i would still take the Ford. At least i would know i would get there and back.:D

I was looking at the Tundras a little bit back then. I seem to recall they just had a bad batch of them and you could tell by the build date if you had the affected trannys. Been too long for me to remember. I know Toyota was being very good about replacing them though.

I am a big fan of Toyotas, by the way.

Re: Will My Truck Tow My Newe Boat

How did the OP's thread go off topic to be about Tundras instead of his Tacoma and towing his boat? Let's bring this back on topic guys.

EDIT: That was a rhetorical question, I really don't what you to answer how it got off-topic, just bring it back on-topic! ;) Thought I better add that before I started to hear, "Well, he said this. Then I said that. Then ...":D Not that that kind of behavior would EVER happen here! LOL!

At 7000' elevation, the turbo V6 would kick the V8's butt.

NOS is a company... NO2 is an oxidizer that helps make huge power with enough added fuel

damn fast and furious...

I suspect that my v8 would make short work of that turbo v6 at any altitude

The turbo motor will be almost completely unaffected, powerwise, by the altitude. A naturally aspirated motor, not so much. Now, a turbo-diesel...

Re: Will My Truck Tow My Newe Boat

turbo-diesel ya say?

to the o/p... your taco COULD safely pull that boat if the above estimates are correct and it IS under the 6500 lb rating but it isn't extremely well suited to the job and you would be wise to look into a bigger truck IF it's in ur budget.

Towing capacity is one are where a little overkill (within reason) fits just right. Ie my truck (pulls 20,000 lbs with ease) would be extreme overkill for ur boat and I would never even have to think about controlling that boat... With the taco long down grades would mandate reduced speeds and down shifting.

Very good working trailer brakes, a big trans cooler, a little extra tongue weight (not over 15% of trailer weight tho) and air bags or helper springs in the rear would help out a bunch
