Re: Will My Truck Tow My Newe Boat

The 4 door with 6' bed. I believe it was 141" from 2005-2009, but due to some minor steering & suspension changes in 2010(?) it is now 'only' 140.6" on new models.
You have a link to those specs? Tacoma not Tundra right?

I didn't think the 4 door ever had a 6 foot bed. A few years ago, I was going to buy one of these(not for towing). I don't remember a 6 foot bed available.

Definitely a 2005+ Tacoma. The double cab long bed Tundra has a 164.6 wheelbase.

Toyota Tacoma Truck - 2013 Performance & Specifications

Click "Dimensions" then add "Add Vehicle". The last option is a 4x4, Double Cab, Automatic, long bed.

"Long bed" is really misleading on the Tacoma since long is really the standard 6' 1 1/2" bed used on other cab configurations, not a standard 8' pickup long bed. You can also get the double cab with a short 5' 1/3" bed.

The 6' bed has become the long/standard bed and the 5' is now considered the short bed with all manufacturers. Unless a person has a regular cab. 4 doors seem to be the truck of choice. It's the grocery getter/family truckster/Friday nite out to dinner vehicle. It's not your father's pickup anymore.....

One important aspect that has not been mentioned is the weight rating of your factory hitch. For example, my 03 1500 Silverado (5.3/extended cab/4x4) came factory with a Class III hitch that is rated at 5000# max, which is well under the rated towing capacity of the truck. If you plan to tow over 5000#, you'll need to upgrade your towing hitch. Check the drawbar and trailer ball as well, as many of those are rated at 5000# or less.

GM isn't the only manufacturer guilty of this, so this is a good point for everyone to check.

If that boat (loaded) is under your rated towing capacity you should be fine, just check all your towing components (hitch, drawbar, ball) to ensure that they meet the criteria as well. As mentioned, you should also check to ensure you have working trailer brakes and a transmission cooler. And as always, drive with some common sense.

Its actually rated higher if you use a weight distributing hitch. I have the same hitch. It says on the hitch the weight distributing number.

The factory class IV Tacoma hitch (part of the towing package) is rated for 650lbs tongue weight with or without weight distribution. Most of the after market Tacoma hitches are 500lbs without weight distribution.

OP,
The Tacoma is a great small truck. However, its only downfall for me is its brakes. I have a 08 Tacoma Double Cab short bed which pulls a 22’ Larson (loaded with trailer ~5,000#). The V6 does pretty good pulling but you certainly can’t rush it up those hills. After pulling the boat around once on flat grades with no trailer brakes I knew brakes would be mandatory. I have since added electric brakes to the back axle and I feel much safer. However, another set may be in my future. (let the crazy electric brake stories start) So far I have made at least 40 dunks and there still going strong. I chose this option so I would have brakes going down the ramp and then unplug at the water edge. Also, I have heard of folks putting Tundra brakes on the Tacoma with great success.

I don't care if you're driving a Yugo or an semi truck, towing a trailer that weighs more than the tow vehicle without working trailer brakes is :scared:. State laws and brake power aside, the laws of physics are not in your favor once you get above jogging speed.

I can't speak about the Tacoma, but I can say that while the F150 with the Ecoboost makes great power, when the boost is on it drinks gas like its going out of style. A buddy insisted that we take his new truck to pickup a tractor I bought, which was about 200 miles each way. He said my old straight 6 F150 would struggle and burn too much gas.
What a mistake, the new truck got no more than 12 mpg over the whole trip. I've never gotten that low mpg on my old truck, even towing. The trip was mostly highway and very slight hills at best coming through eastern PA. The turbo was spinning hard the whole time. The trailer weighed 4000lbs loaded at best. We did have a decent amount of wind coming home but its a flat trailer with a small tractor on it.
I've towed twice that with my truck and gotten over 15mpg every time.

I do have a neighbor with a V6 Tacoma, not sure of the year, its probably 3 or 4 years old. He told me on more than one account that he'd never think of towing with it. No clue why but he also owns a full size 5.3L GMC pickup which he tows his boat and enclosed trailer with all the time. The Toyota just does grocery errands. My experience with Toyota ended when I traded in my one and only Toyota back in 1990, it was a 1988 2.4L 5 speed truck with 4x4. It pulled my boat fine, a 19' Evinrude Trihull with an I/O, but the transfer case, transmission, and engine all went within the first 12,000 miles of service with only light use. I traded it in the first chance I got to get out from under it. It pulled fine but it was so plagued with issues I had to move on. I've since owned only Fords but from what I've seen lately I'd probably choose GM if I bought a new truck again. With that said, I'd likely never buy new again, I'm more than happy with my nearly 30 year old Ford truck.
I'm not partial to any brand, just so its American, which is getting harder and harder to find these days with so many parts being made overseas. I've owned many trucks over the years, so far the only one that's stayed through them all is my 1986 F150 with a 4.9L 4 speed stick shift trans, I bought it new and its still going strong with over 50,000 miles on it. All its ever done is tow my boats and trailers around.

Re: Will My Truck Tow My Newe Boat

Years ago ,about 86, I towed a 3700 lb 1933 Studebaker on a tow dolly from York PA to Syracuse NY with a 85 Toyota "1 ton"
about 120 hp 470 gears tempered with over size tires. No problems.Of course it was a one time deal. The car did blow a tube in the garage that night.
Also did a 2700lb Studebaker about the same time from the same place.Later a 1200 lb wood runabout total weight about 2000,
oversize trailer,from Massachusetts.

Really? You have towed 8000lbs with a straight six F150 and gotten 15MPG?

12 MPG sounds about right to me on your friend's truck.

i get about 12-13 in my 5.4l f150 while i tow my 23 footer

OP i have lots of hills around me and im extremely cautious towing my 23 footer. Its not all about the power as much as its about the stopping.
