1973 Evinrude 25hp wire harness plug repair.

Yea that was my original plan was to make a plug under the hood for the other like 4 wires. I was going to use an automotive waterproof connection, then I thought. That's added time to make up, one more spot for a poor connection and even though not much one more cost to the project. This motor...

    Now what

I remember recently in my 25hp 1969 or is it 1970 OMC service manual there is a section about submerged engine. I can't remember exactly but I was thinking it said a day or two in fresh without silt like said it's usually OK as has been mentioned, but salt or the other situations disassembly is...

1973 Evinrude 25hp wire harness plug repair.

Yes. I have come up with leaving the plug in place for the highway current positive and negative as those cables are intact and still ok. I will clip the small wires on the engine side of the plug, will splice in wire drill a new hole in the motor lower cowl install a grommet and shield the wire...

1973 Evinrude 25hp wire harness plug repair.

Ouch yea they are expensive! Just called him. I think I will keep the factory plug letting it make the high current connections and wire in spliced wires with direct hookups for the other ones and splicing into the main harness back where the wires are good.

1973 Evinrude 25hp lower unit failed pressure test.

To update this with the results. I let the JB Weld cure for about 30+ hours. I put pressure to it and there were no bubbles from that void in the lower unit where it was leaking before. Hopefully this will be the end to that leak .

1973 Evinrude 25hp wire harness plug repair.

So after hooking up the steering on this boat I finally got to something I had ignored till now. The dry rotted wires going into the engine. This is for the remote controls, starting and choke for the console. It's factory. The wires on the boat side of the plug are bad from the plug down 8-10"s...

1973 Evinrude 25hp lower unit failed pressure test.

I'm going to put JB over it. I am sure that will seal the hole. But your right I could probably get a whole engine let alone a bad lower unit and scavange the case. But I have everything built and done in this one and it saves the cost and the labor to swap it all out.

1973 Evinrude 25hp lower unit failed pressure test.

I have been trying to clean the area best I can with brake clean, and a gun barrel brush on a rod chucked in my drill brushing out the bottom of the cavity, spraying it out. Cut a small piece of scotch bright green pad and put down there and run it around with a screw driver. It looks like a pin...

1973 Evinrude 25hp lower unit failed pressure test.

I'm in SC. It does get cold enough to freeze. That drain when I got it was leaking cruddy water so it was open...but if the milkshake on the inside froze? I have pretty good eyes even at 40 and I had a light and my face down there on the top of the hole looking and I can't see anything that...

1973 Evinrude 25hp lower unit failed pressure test.

Ok I cleaned it up, sprayed carb cleaner in there plugged the hole up and used a screwdriver to rub all the sides. Then air to clean it and sprayed it and more air. Then I put pressure to it and used a soapy spray. It's best I can tell it's bubbling on the bottom of that void closes to the...

1973 Evinrude 25hp lower unit failed pressure test.

Ok so I rebuilt this lower with the parts that were bad. All new seals etc. Ran it, next day or two noticed gear oil leaking. So pull it off and pressure test it. Leaking under water pump housing. So I pull it off and pull the plate up to see. Well the drive shaft seal is not leaking but it's...

    New boat owner!

Haha, no I'm not in the service, never was. That's some iboats lingo they use to label you, based on how many years you have been around and number of posts or something. There all marine related, navy ranks or ship officer terms. I have been here since like 2005 or so and been fairly active...

    New boat owner!

Yea impellers are cheap. I have heard bad things about the china ones. I have used Sierra and Evinrude ones without problems. There is a cup the impellor sits in and bottom plates. Depending on model they may or may not have them and there constructed differently. Impellers are not easy. Some...

    1973 johnson 25hp 25R73A

I don't think one vane going the wrong way would make the engine overheat. It would create an OD or pulsing water flow as one vane would not be pushing water but I think it would still cool the engine unless many things went wrong.

    Lower drain plug screw?

Ummm,....that's the screw that holds your shift rod in place. I'm sure someone has told you this at this point. Hopefully it will line up and go back in and you haven't screwed up too bad! There is an o rings that goes on that screw to seal it. But it has nothing to do with gear oil change in...
