    Rochester Quadrajet Rebuild and Adjustments

As a quick update and refresh.....the Quadrajet I rebuilt is 100% perfect. Throttle changes are seamless between idle and WOT. The only issue I see is now I have more power, and tach over 5k at WOT. This was a surprise I wasn’t expecting since the secondary fuel load should be the same between...

1976 Tom Boy Boat, 1976 40 HP Johnson Outboard and who knows what Trailer

Not sure if credit is what’s necessary.....maybe what the heck’s wrong with you man!!! Ha ha. I have to admit, I do like taking on projects I’ve never done before. My Dad has the knowhow, just no ability at this point with a bum hip. At least when I rebuild that chimney, it will no longer be as...

1976 Tom Boy Boat, 1976 40 HP Johnson Outboard and who knows what Trailer

It must be the season of chimney fixing. I just repaired my parents chimneys. Yep two of them. One with a terra-cotta insert for the oil fired furnace, the other is older, all brick, no insert. Believe it or not, that’s the wood burning chimney. Both chimneys required that several courses needed...

    Mercruiser 3.0 Exhaust ?

Perhaps a picture would help make things more clear. I’m really not sure what you have there.

    How many gallons of resin?

My 20’ Chaparral took 19 gallons of resin.

    Transom gap?

In my opinion that gap won’t make a difference. Just don’t caulk the holes with silicone. Use 3M 5200, the let ‘er eat.

Boat interior question - to paint wood or not to paint?

Sealed wood is always better than unsealed. In my restoration, I sealed all the above deck plywood, such as the seat backers, vinyl pad backers, and the rear seat frame. The sealer is a recipe I discovered on this forum. It’s one quart spars urethane, one quart linseed oil, and 2 quarts mineral...

    Bayliner 1600 rotten floor

+1 on the total restoration. It just takes time and the space to do it properly. The satisfaction in a job well done trumps the time it took to do it. I had my 20’ bow rider Chaparral complete in about 8 months.

Yeah, you’ll be pleased with the flap disks. I even used the HF ones, and they worked well. Let ‘er eat.

    Re; Broke spark plug

That is strange. How do you know that no water was being pulled in. If that is the case, your impeller will be smoked.

    Amateur needs advice

I’m guessing that what Lubird is saying is that the wood wasn’t exposed and therefore couldn’t be seen. Those who are new to boats, or haven’t rebuilt one probably think they’re all fiberglass.

    Amateur needs advice

The plywood is the core material in most boats of this era. Once the wood is laid, several layers of fiberglass are laid over top. Seal holes with 3M 5200. Don’t use silicone.

    Rochester Quadrajet Rebuild and Adjustments

Thanks for the compliment. Hopefully others can use this thread as a guide. Next is a Rochester Mercarb. Rebuilding it for a friend, and will document the tear down and rebuild for this forum, (in a thread of its own of course).

36 grit flap disk on a 4-1/2” angle grinder. It’ll eat fiberglass quickly.

    AlumaCraft Dash Repair Help

Absolutely agree with @GA_Boater. Also, instead of painting you could do a carbon fiber look vinyl wrap. These wraps look great, and conform to curves with a little heat. Several patterns to choose from, including texture.

    Amateur needs advice

Are you sure that’s not fiberglass covered plywood? Boats of that era are mostly wood core encapsulated by fiberglass. The plastic bases could be trimmed to fit the exact contour of the floor. Yes they can be bolted to the floor. All penetrations should be properly sealed so water doesn’t get...
